Week 5: Total QB Rating

Week five: ESPN’s Total Quarterback Ratings. Interesting to see around the country: so many starting QB’s are rated lower than their backups. Notre Dame. Miami. Clemson. Georgia. Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech. North Carolina. A rare exception: Alabama, now that Tua has taken over. A coach will have a lot invested in an upperclassman or top recruit, and risks team chemistry (and hurt feelings) by starting a less-heralded backup.

Matt Leinert has identified his own Heisman candidates. Doesn’t include Trace McSorley, whose stock dropped after losing to Ohio State.

Trevor Lawrence’s rating went down after the Syracuse game, I suppose due to a poor completion percentage against a tough opponent. At 30th he still ranks ahead of media darlings McSorley, Browning, JT Daniels, Stidham, Wimbush, and Kelly Bryant. Look for Trevor’s rating to rise this week against Wake Forest. Expect to see backup Will Chase Brice to get a few snaps as well.

The Bryant demotion/transfer shows how meaningless are the accolades of expert television analysts. Also the low rankings. Sometimes I will laugh out loud at the analyst of the week, watching a team for the first time all year, quoting the same nonsense last week’s analyst espoused, only to watch a poor performance negate everything they said before the game. Too bad they’re never judged for the accuracy of their statements. Just once it’s be nice to hear someone tell it like it is: “This guy’s a dud.”
