Most Influential Golfer?

Ticket sales at Pebble Beach were down one year. Officials couldn’t figure out why, because it was the first tine in several years that Tiger Woods was playing. The next year Tiger didn’t play but ticket sales were up. The reason – Bill Murray didn’t play the first year, but was back playing the next, causing the increase in ticket sales. One Pebble Beach official said “Other than Arnold Palmer, I’d put Bill Murray up there with anyone in terms of influence over American public golf.”

Interesting Monday. M got up early and fixed a cup of coffee. He was out the door headed to the farm around 7 am. I got up at my usual work from home time, and took my usual shower before sitting down at the kitchen table to start work at the usual time. Had Kook-ade left over from Sunday night so I didn’t have to make more. Phone calls, work, ice cream for breakfast.
Around 11:30 I went to mix more koolade but the faucet at the kitchen sink wasn’t working. Was the handle broken? I went over to the downstairs bathroom and that sink wasn’t working. Outside hose wasn’t working. Checked the water meter in the yard. Someone had taken the cover off, because it hadn’t been replaced correctly. Seemed like the water hadn’t been turned off because the dial wasn’t turned all the way one way or another.
Called the water department. On hold for 30 minutes. Lady came on the line and was getting my info – then the call disconnected. Called back. On hold another 30 minutes. They said they’d send someone over. The guy showed up. He’d come earlier and shut off the water, then realized he was at the wrong address, But he couldn’t fix what he’d broken, so he called in another guy. That guy said it would take an hour to fix it. After he made the fix the water still wouldn’t come on. He called in the water department plumber. He didn’t arrive until after six. By then both M and C were home. M had worked on the fam all day and was dirty. Plumber finally got it fixed by 7 pm. Yard wasn’t dug up too much.
Not much else from yesterday. Busy at work. M’s first day at the farm. Brought home just picked carrots and strawberries. M and C cooked a sausage pasta dish, and lentls. I mixed mine all together. Nothing much on TV. Rerun of The Neighborhood.
Kid at work went to a wedding this weekend. Might’ve been a family wedding not sure. Came into the office yesterday then found out someone at the wedding tested positive for covid. My coworker didn’t remember getting near that person, but is working from home the rest of the week to self-quarantine.

Are the Jack Reacher books good? Maybe I should read them. I am finishing up Cilka’s Journey. Next up is The Soul of Baseball: a Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America, by Joe Posnaski. Recommended by Chris Dimino.

I’ve seen one game at Legion Field – when Auburn beat Alabama in Bo Jackson’s freshman year. 1983? Close game, nationally televised. Storm clouds rolling in. Pretty sure we got drenched.  At some point Legion Field’s upper deck was removed. Went by there when Will was visiting UAB.

Busy with work. Hard to keep abreast of what’s going on in the country. Timely article by Denison today. Here are two tidbits.

David French recently quoted New York Times author Michelle Goldberg, who noted that 2020 started off like 1974 (an impeachment crisis), quickly became 1918 (a pandemic), turned into 1929 (an economic crash), and is now 1968 (massive urban unrest). We could add 1992 and the images of Los Angeles burning after four police officers were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King.
According to US historian John Baick, "What's fundamentally common for all of these things in our history is a lack of agreement of what reality is—a lack of agreement about facts, about causes. When we can't agree on basic truth, we reach our greatest periods of divide."

Wore my black suede adidas Campus today. All day.
