Tide Rolls

I stayed up for the entire game last night. The second half, which was pretty much all Alabama. During the game I was typing a recap on my phone email, waiting to send when I was finished. But shortly before the game was over, I went back to the email and lost it. A great piece of literature lost for the ages.

Devonte Smith had a huge first half, then was injured early in the second half. This hardly slowed the Alabama juggernaut. To think last year Bama lost QB Tua and WR Jeudy, then was much more potent this year.

QB Jones stats after three quarters last night almost equaled Joe Burrow’s game for the ages in last year’s championship.

Ohio State lost RB Sermon on the first play, but his replacement filled in admirably. OSU offense moved the ball on Bama’s defense all night, but at times couldn’t breech the goal line. Two almost touchdowns were correctly overturned via replay. QB Justin Fields played courageously. At least two of his passes were almost intercepted, but dropped. In the second half Fields broke a run past the secondary, but unlike Trevor Lawrence could not take it to the house. Fields did throw a touchdown pass on the next play.

Six national championships for Alabama in the past 12 years. Saban passes Bear Bryant for most titles. WR Smith could only be stopped by an injury. WR Waddle returned from a broken ankle after only 11 weeks. Most college football players would’ve opted out, but Waddle and Smith wanted to be a part of the championship. That’s what sets Alabama apart from almost every other school, the lack of selfishness.

In a related note, UGA All-American punter Jake Carmada is taking advantage to the covid rule allowing athletes an extra year of college eligibility. GT punter Pressley Harvin should take note. I’m wondering if NFL teams will be shying away from Harvin due to his massive girth. He won’t be drafted, though I’m sure some desperate team will sign him as a free agent, with few guarantees.

Left work shortly after five. Was dismayed to learn the Taco Bell at Lower Roswell & Johnson’s Ferry has been shuttered. Drove through Wendy’s for a snack before small group. A good discussion about John chapter 9. Did not turn on the game until 9 pm, and saw that I had missed three touchdowns.

This morning I stopped by Wendy’s again, this time for a free breakfast baconator with purchase of a small seasoned potatoes (fries). Baconator was okay. Looked in the commercials like it might’ve been a bacon burger with an egg, but instead of a beef patty it was a sausage patty. Guess I’ll hit up Wendy’s again tomorrow on the way to hot stove, for a free junior bacon cheeseburger (or maybe use my Moe's deal).

This weekend’s NFL playoff schedule. Dave’s pick in bold.

CURTIS GRANDERSON  [B-R Bio] was a one-time Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter, who won the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award twice as much as any other player. Won the MMMOY in 2009, 2016, 2018 & 2019. Fellow honorees Jim Thome, John Smoltz & Michael Young each earned the award twice. Granderson played w/TOR in 2018. He had consecutive seasons of forty home runs, but was the active leader in career triples when he retired. With 95 triples at the close of business in 2019, he led all active players.  Hit 41 & 43 HR in 2011 & 2012. The year he won his only Silver Slugger Award, he led the majors in runs scored. Won SS in 2011 playing for NYY. Scored 136 R that season.
