Top Pick

Sports Illustrated cover boy Trevor Lawrence has already been compared to Peyton Manning, John Elway, and Andrew Luck. Mature beyond his years. Hopefully the Jaguars won't ruin him. Think Chicago Bulls before Michael Jordan arrived.

Lots of factors go into who becomes an elite NFL QB. Talent. Work ethic. Arm strength. Leadership, Smarts. Ability to read defenses. Study habits. Getting on a good team with a good coach.

Glenn Close has been nominated for an Academy Award for her work in Hillbilly Elegy, though it's doubtful liberal Hollywood will choose her for such a conservative-based movie. Several negative movie reviews noted the conservative narrative of the novel, though in fact author JD Vance went out of his way to be fair.

Hillbilly Elegy was filmed in Atlanta and downtown Macon. The hotel scene was filmed at the Cheshire Motor Inn at 1865 Cheshire Bridge Road. The multiple railroad underpass scenes were filmed on Poplar Street south of downtown Macon. The dinner reception for law student was filmed at the Barnett Condos, not far from Ponce City Market. The crew also visited the famous "Goats on the Roof" restaurant in north Georgia, near Clayton.

In researching this I rediscovered Macon native Oby Brown, who played sports at my high school before I came along.

Reading Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Leadership: In Turbulent Times", about FDR, LBJ, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. How they got into politics. How they courted their wives. As Lincoln grew, he quit using satire to counter and humiliate his adversaries.

The Georgia Tech faculty is having the student body vote whether to change the words of the iconic "Ramblin Wreck" fight song to be more gender friendly. It's the exact same change that was overwhelmingly voted down just a few years ago.

Did you know: country musician Jerry Reed attended O'Keefe High School, next to the GT campus. Graduated around 1955.

Tuesday: worked from before 7:45 am past 6:15 pm. Was planning on knocking out a two week old project after 5 pm, when the daily customer order arrived almost two hours late, all messed up. Had to fix that, so the project didn't get done.

Got home about the same time as C. I was famished and frustrated, so we headed to El Porton to eat. Not crowded, but the service was slow. Got home and watched some of the news about the verdict in Minneapolis. Also a couple of Seinfelds, including Jamie Gertz in the famous "Can't Spare a Square" episode.

Monday night I dreamed I was at a big youth camp. My rewritten Sound of Music responsive singing was being used. There was a raging, muddy stream with bridges crossing above. My son Matthew was in the dream, as well as Charles Baugh. There was a group of people gathered around a campfire. One guy was quietly wrapping up his podcast. Lang was in charge of that group.

Last night I dreamt Lang and I were doing show together about the SEC. We were on a long phone call with our producer. Lang had to ride a steam engine locomotive. He was concerned because the train's engineer was someone neither of us could get along with.

DON NEWCOMBE  [SABR Bio] won the Cy Young Award the year after Cy Young died. In 1956, Newk became the first ever Cy Young Award winner. Young had passed away the previous November. Newcombe hit fifteen home runs and batted .271 in a ten-year MLB career. He also had 33 doubles and 108 RBI in a career that argues against the DH. He was the only National League pitcher to steal home during the 1950s. On 26-May-1955, after hitting a 2-run triple, Newcombe stole home off Pittsburgh reliever Roy Face for Brooklyn's final run of the game. Newk then pitched the 9th inning, securing his seventh win and third shutout of the season. There has only been one other pitcher steal of home in the ensuing 65 seasons (Cardinal Curt Simmons). Pitchers have only stolen home 18 times in NL history, and 22 in the AL. Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity stole home twice. Babe Ruth stole home while he was pitching. Also Johnny Vander Meer.

Article: what to reveal, and what to hold back.

1. Ask questions, to show you care.

2. Be confident, but not arrogant.

3. Don't say bad things about other people. Instead say good things, even about adversaries.

4. Don't talk about how much (or little) you earn.

5. Be a team player. Give others the credit they're due.

6. Don't act desperate, even if you are.

7. Be flexible.

Life is a series of negotiations. The best are when both sides gain. Don't expect to win at the other's expense. Be friendly and approachable. Mirror the other person's behavior. Be empathetic. Ask questions. Better understand what others want and need. Have I shared this link before?
