The Hitch

At Whitney and Moe's wedding last Friday evening, only the preacher and bride and groom stood at the front. No best man or maid of honor. No groomsmen or bridesmaids. In an era of having like ten of each, have none was a refreshing change. The only problem: the bride forgot to bring the groom's wedding ring. In the middle of the ceremony she turned to her mother and exclaimed "I forgot the ring!"

My nephew Zane served as the "officiant" and performed the ceremony. He did a good job, but his microphone didn't work.

Twenty years after 9/11: is the war over?

I've been researching the UGA/Clemson rivalry. In particular, the games played in 1980, 1981, and 1982.

DON MATTINGLY [SABR Bio] still holds the MLB record for most plate appearances in a season without making a single attempt at a stolen base. In 1986 Mattingly had 742 PS and zero SB & zero attempts. He led the majors in doubles for three consecutive seasons, in 1984 (44), 1985 (48) & 1986 (53). His longest hitting streak was halted by a future Hall of Famer who threw a ten-inning shutout. Coming into the game on 27-Sep-1986, Mattingly had hit safely in 24 straight games. That day, Detroit's Jack Morris won his 20th game of the season. Of the four hits Morris gave up, none were Mattingly's, but the intentional pass Morris issued in the 6th inning stopped the streak.

PHIL RIZZUTO [SABR Bio] was the mystery guest on the first episode of the "What's My Line" on television. The show aired 02-Feb-1950 [Start at 23:05], just before spring training of his MVP year. Only two players played on more World Series Championship teams than Rizzuto. Scooter has eight World Series rings, helping New York win in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953 & 1956, trailing only DiMaggio (9) and Berra (10). Rizzuto is tied with Crosetti, Dickey & Gehrig. Rizzuto was famous for his diminutive physical dimensions: He stood 5'6" and weighed around 150 lbs. The only uniform number he wore in the majors was 10. He had a reputation for favoring the Yankees in any situation, a bias that served him well and contributed to his tremendous popularity as an announcer.

SPUD CHANDLER [SABR Bio] his record for the best AL career winning percentage was broken by Pedro Martinez (min 100W). Chandler's mark of .717 was the AL standard until Pedro left the AL at the end of the 2004 season with an impressive record of 117-37 (.760). Spud was the first player over the age of 35 to win a league MVP award in the current system, in 1943 at the age of 36. The next home run he hit after his grand slam was an inside-the-park home run. Grand slam on 26-Jul-1940; IPHR on 09-May-1943(1).
