Braves Insider

Braves beat writer Mark Bowman put the kibosh on the Freddie Freeman-Yankees rumors. Other rumors have Freddie re-signing with the Braves before the end of the month. Let the Mets open the vault for Scherzer and other free agents – how often does that buy a team a championship? Hasn’t worked very often for the Yankees or Dodgers. How old is Max? How did he fare in the 2021 playoffs? Meanwhile the world champion Braves have at least five home grown position players and four or five home-grown pitchers. And they just signed a former all-star closer. But watch the Mets get picked to win the division (or Phillies or Nats).

The Braves World Series stocking hat everyone wants is sold out, and sells for $200 on eBay. Other similar Braves hats are sold out as well. But I found it being sold overseas and ordered one. Usually the website shows how many people had ordered the item, but after I placed my order I noticed the number of previous sales was just mine. Perhaps a new company, but they offer several items. The website is usually reliable, similar to Amazon, so hopefully my hat will deliver.

Saturday the Braves hosted a Cherokee Indian competition at Truist Park. The event was sparsely attended. Not sure where all those people were who were so interested in preserving Indian dignity and stuff.

The national media is ignoring the Waukesha Christmas parade attack.

Man Wednesday I wore myself out golfing, cleaning, and laundering. Was sore Thursday morning, moving slow. Left at 11:30 to go to W&MC’s. Will cooked the turkey and a cheesy smoked macaroni and cheese, and Ceil cooked all the rest. M brought a pecan pie for dessert. Drove back home to clean, pack, and get Winnie. Left at 6 pm and drove straight through to Jefferson, arriving before 11 pm.

Listened to my book the whole way, to keep me awake - Stephen King’s new book Billy Summers, about a hit man planning a job. King’s books are so long, with great character development. Billy planned the hit, took the shot, and made his escape - but I’m not halfway through the book.

In Jefferson Ceil has been sleeping with her mom since we let her usual helpers have time off while we’re here. Usually Winnie sleeps downstairs with Ceil, but Friday night C had Winnie sleep upstairs with me. So I didn’t get as much sleep.

After the big family meal on Friday (20 in attendance) I was able to catch up on emails and other computer stuff. Watched some NC@NCState but thought it was poorly played. Rusty’s turkey was very succulent. He injects it with butter, Sprite, and other seasonings. Good food, and coconut cream pie. We watched the Bryson Brooks golf match, but I was playing on my laptop the whole time.

Saturday: nothing but football: ESPN College Gameday, GA@GT, Bama@Auburn, and Clemson@SC. Over thirty Boston College players are missing Saturday’s game against Wake Forest with the flu. I haven’t heard anything about the GT football team.

Also zipped over to Uncle Lennie’s to plant Barney’s marker in Aunt Corrine’s pet cemetery. C cooked spaghetti for supper. Also more play on my laptop. Trying to unsubscribe to so many junk emails.

Drove back to Atlanta on Sunday. Traffic heavy but steady.

C cooked pancakes for supper.

Men of Faith Are Men Who Fight: John Piper

CASEY STENGEL  [SABR Bio] once famously quipped, “The secret of managing a club is keeping the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided.” He dyed his hair in later years and always denied that he did it. He was sensitive about his age, especially since that was why the Yankees had let him go. In his first nine seasons in the majors, only once did his team finish over .500. In 1938 Casey guided the Boston Bees (now Braves) to a 77-75 record, i.e., .507.
