Summer Days

Finishing up Pat Conroy’s My Losing Season. So good. The 1966-67 basketball season at The Citadel. They played Auburn, Lefty Drisell’s Davidson team, Richmond, Johnny Mitchell Sr’s VMI squad, Clemson, Wofford, Stetson, Jacksonville, Loyola in New Orleans. He working at a summer basketball camp at UVA with Lenny Chappell, Jerry West, Rollie Massimino, and Dick Vitale. Conroy had an up and down senior season and didn’t make it off the bench for one game, but in the end was named team MVP and won the school-wide sportsmanship award. A book I think you’d like. He shared his struggles with his unfeeling coach,  the tough military life, the freshman hazing, his abusive father. Amazingly, in his later years his Marine father demurred and became a good friend.

Big win for the Braves over the Mets. Still plenty of time left in the season. Anna and Caleb attended the game. Not sure if they arrived in time to get a bobblehead.

I have more golf clubs than I need. Also three extra golf bags: small medium and large. I gave my old set to Matthew, but he doesn’t really play. Brought a 3 iron back from SC but need to put on a new grip. There are other clubs up in SC that were C’s parents. C needs to bring back her mother’s old clubs in case she ever wants to play, or so Anna can have them.

Sometimes tough to have energy in the AM. If I make it to the gym then I will work out. The running days are the toughest. I hit the weights hard. I’ve added pullups and dips, which are tough.

Monday: busy day at work. Didn’t have anything to eat all day. Too busy to go out at lunch, and then I worked until 7 pm. Then C cooked a small supper. Usually she prepares too much food. Little pieces of grilled chicken, and baked potato and sweet potato wedges. Matthew ate with us. In addition to baking most of the pizzas, now he’s making most of the dough.

Ceil had spent the day with Shivonne, who is now clapping to music. Winnie got to go play with Okie, so she was exhausted last night.

Plenty to do again today. My plan is to cash in my birthday deals at Culvers and Red Robin after work. Hopefully I’ll have time. Remaining birthday deals include Moes, Ruby Tuesday, Jersey Mikes, Marlows, Zaxbys cookies, Ponko Chicken cookie, the wing place, Pizza Hut, and Baskin Robbins.

So busy at work. Trying to catch up. Coworker will be off the rest of the week, and the week after that. Not sure if I’ll have time for two upcoming webinars: (1) Unconsious bias & microagression, and (2) Bystander intervention. Unconsiously I feel microaggresion just thinking about this.

DENISON: the fastest growing evangelical Christian population in the world is in Iran, as Iranians frustrated with their government and their Shiite religion are turning to Christ. Ebadi reports "the growth of the church in Afghanistan is ten times faster than in Iran."

Luke 18:10-14: Jesus tells a parable.

Two men went up to the temple to pray,

one a pharisee and the other a tax collector.

The pharisee, standing by himself, prayed this:

God I thank you that I am not like other men:

extortioners, unjust, adulterers,

or even like this tax collector.

I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.

But the tax collector, standing far off,

would not even lift up his eyes to heaven,

but beat his breast, saying God, be merciful on me, a sinner!

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified,

rather than the other.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

but the one who humbled himself will be exalted.

GRAIG NETTLES  [SABR Bio] is the only Yankee captain to lead the American League in home runs since Lou Gehrig. Nettles was captain from 1982-84. Led AL in HR with 32 in 1976. Gehrig led MLB thrice in HR.  Nettles was with ATL in 1987 in his next to last season. Nettles lost his position to Harmon Killebrew. He only played 26 games at 3B for MIN in 1968-69. In his twenty-plus career seasons, he never batted above .276. His best season average was .276 in 1978 for NYY.

Thrift store shirts I thought Matthew might like to see. Instead I bought a Joe Montana Notre Dame jersey for two bucks. Just what I needed.
