saturday

Beautiful Saturday morning for golf, once the fog burned off. Played with fellow early birds Robert and Paul.

I hardly ever come close to a hole in one on a par three. I don’t doubt that Dock’s dad has made several holes in one. John Smoltz has made like ten. I think Jeff Francoeur once holed the second shot for a 2 on a par 5. Don’t you call that an albatross? Below Robert tees off on seven.

Tuesday I hit green on two straight par three holes, and barely missed the green on the two previous holes, also par threes (Candler Park’s 9 holes are par 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 3). Probably a record for me. But I was hitting several shots on each hole, since I was playing alone. Saturday on the 8th hole (below) I hit a nice approach onto the green.

Philadelphia became the first city to lose two championships the same day: Phillies and the soccer team, the Union.

Larry Bird on one of the most famous steals in NBA history.

ROBERTO CLEMENTE  [SABR Bio] was the first Latin American player to win a National League batting title, in 1961 with a .351 average. The next three 3 he won in 1964, 65 & 67 all led the majors. He didn’t lead the majors in 1961 because Detroit’s Norm Cash hit 75 points higher than his own next-best year, batting an amazing .361, the highest of the 1960s. He had a base hit in every World Series game he played in, with nine hits in 1960 and twelve in 1971.  The top WS hitting streak is 17 games by Hank Bauer of the Yankees (7 in 1956 and 1957, and 3 in 1958). Clemente suffered from an arthritic neck, wrenched spine and insomnia throughout his career, all resulting from a car accident.
