2022 PNC Championship

More from the PNC Championship.

Charlie Woods out-drove his father (on one hole). Justin Thomas quizzed Charlie on his choice to wear a Snoopy cap ("it fit best").

1937 HoF ClassMORGAN BULKELEY, BAN JOHNSON, NAP LAJOIE, CONNIE MACK, JOHN McGRAW, TRIS SPEAKER, GEORGE WRIGHT & CY YOUNG.

OZZIE SMITH [SABR Bio] was the first National League shortstop to win the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards in the same season, in 1987. It was Smith’s only SS. In college he played for the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Mustangs. Smith (with 15) trails only Hank Aaron (25) & Willie Mays (24) in All-Star appearances by Alabamians. Ozzie’s migration from Alabama to California to play college ball followed a trajectory not unlike those of Walter Johnson, Jackie Robinson, Frank Robinson, Rickey Henderson, Willie Stargell, Reggie Smith, Tommy Harper and Chet Lemon. All these players were born in other states but had their secondary education in the state of California. There were no doubt others.

VERN LAW is the only pitcher in the last half of the 20th century to throw 18 innings in one game, on 19-Jul-1955. Making an emergency start on short rest, Law went the equivalent of two complete games. Although the Pirates won, Law did not get credit for the win. Note: Tom Cheney pitched 16 innings in his famous 21-strikeout game.
