DENISON: a new Barna study asking nonbelievers to list reasons for their doubts. The top three: (1) hypocrisy of religious people. (2) science. (3) human suffering. Each is the result of blaming God for what is not God’s fault. When religious people act hypocritically, God grieves (cf. Matthew 7:5; 1 John 4:20; Matthew 6:1). When people misunderstand the relationship between science (which focuses on creation) and religion (which focuses on the Creator), the Creator is not to blame. When humans cause human suffering, their Father mourns (cf. Lamentations 3:22–23; John 11:35). What about suffering that is not caused by misused freedom? What about tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and so on? It is true we live in a world broken by the Fall and sin (Romans 8:22). There were no tornadoes in the Garden of Eden. But another principle is worth considering: “You do not have because you do not ask” (James 4:2).

JIMMIE FOXX [SABR Biowas born in Sudlersville Maryland in 1908. Foxx played in the major leagues from 1925 through 1945. He was the first to hit pinch hit grand slams in both the AL and NL, on 21-Sept-1931(2) and 18-May-1945. Foxx had the most hits in the same year of anyone who also hit 50 home runs in a season. His 213 hits with his 58 home runs in 1932 is a mark that has not been equaled.

HANK GREENBERG   [SABR Biohit 25+ home runs in each of seven American League seasons, then exactly 25 in 1947, his only NL season and his last as a player. The 1937 Detroit Tigers sported four players, each with at least 200 hits that year: Gee Walker (213); Charlie Gehringer (209); Pete Fox (208); and Greenberg (200). Listen to Pirates’ co-owner Bing Crosby, along with Groucho Marx and Greenberg himself singing the tune “Goodbye, Mr. Ball, Goodbye”. Hank was born 1-1-11 in NYC.
