R.I.P. Homer Jones

R.I.P. Homer Jones, one of the first real deep threats in professional football. Still holds the record for highest yards per catch average. But Jones changed football forever by inventing the touchdown spike. As a kid in the 60's and 70's the Giants weren't super competitive, and Jones was but a blip on my radar screen. But I was entranced by the fledgling touchdown celebrations, mostly early on the spike. So gool. I practicing spiking the football. Nowadays a Gronk can windmill home a spike and have it bounce high in the air. Back then then simple standing spike was enough for me, to ensure a high bounce.

In 8th grade I actually scored a touchdown on a long catch and run. When I got to the end zone I was so overjoyed (and a bit tired) and I did good just to hold both arms over my head as my teammates embraced me. Later I realized I had missed out out on a rare opportunity to spike the ball. The officials probably would've called a penalty anyway.

Did a little calculating and figured out that from 1987 to 2022 I slowly gained an average of two pounds per year. Nice to finally be reversing that trend. Need to keep going and get back to my 1987 weight by 2027. But literally as I typed this I was offered (and accepted) leftover Dreamland BBQ for lunch. Also Brunswick stew, macaroni & cheese, potato salad, and banana pudding. I've been able to lose weight by eating less and exercising, all the while not cutting out any foods like I like. Just moderation. Eating less is easier when I go into the office. Harder at home not to snack and eat up leftovers. I am eating way less fast food.

Braves the first NL team with 42 wins.

Wednesday: left work at 4 pm. I hate 285 at rush hour, so I took Peachtree Industrial to Spaulding to Dalrymple to Johnson Ferry, left on Paper Mill to Lower Roswell to Delk to Cobb parkway. All the way across town taking five turns. Stopped by Taco Bell and a thrift store. Pulled into MUST Minstries at the same time as co-laborers Reid and Dan. Later Robert, Angela, Nelson, and Brian arrived. MUST recently built a shelter for men, women, and children to stay in for 30 days while they get back on their feet. We all just sat and talked and listened as they ate. Got home around 8:30.

Up early to run 3 miles at the gym. We had the US Open on at the office, though no sound. Hard to make out who's who, except for a few like Rahm and Morikawa.

BILLY WILLIAMS [SABR Bio] hit his 400th career home run on 12-Jun-1975 with the Oakland A's. On that squad were Reggie Jackson (1973 AL MVP); Rollie Fingers (1981 AL MVP); Vida Blue (1971 AL MVP); Other teammates that year included multiple World Series MVPs, Cy Young Award winners, Hall of Famers, World Series champions, World Series MVPs and Gold Glove winners – the 1975 Oakland A's. Williams played with third baseman Ron Santo in more than 2,000 games together.

Kids today have their cellphones always at the ready, and can answer questions like that in a flash. Takes me forever. Plus I hear with the new $4000 virtual reality goggles you put on you can just wave your hands at the two big screen TVs you see in front of you. It's a whole new world out there that I know very little about. So easy to make slight changes and re-write things like the Bible, and youngsters won't notice the differences – and all of a sudden the Anti-Christ is in charge of a one world government.
