The Times They Are A-Changin

Tuesday: left work shortly after five. Since C was headed to the airport and I had men’s Bible study, I picked up my free nacho fries from Taco Bell plus the dollar large fries deal next door at Arbys. Then I was a real pig and ate some leftover homemade ice cream at home before making the short drive  around the corner to Reid’s house.

Ten in attendance for Bible Study: four Davids, Rob, Robert, Tommy, Ryan, and Reid. Gleaned three interesting takeaways:

1. Lee taught the second half of his lesson on persecution. Some think that within 20 years, large active churches making an impact like Johnson Ferry will be persecuted by federal, state, and local governments, who will want to confiscate real estate and buildings, driving real Christians wishing to worship and gather into smaller private gatherings. Even now there are East Cobb residents who think the large tract of land owned by JFBC is being “wasted” – despite the many services JFBC provides for the community: a wide variety of low cost sports programs for kids of all ages, a café that’s open 7 days a week, childcare programs, and more.

2. Another observation: young people these days are turned off from the loud music and smoke machines currently used at many churches, opting for a more simple production

3. Someone else attends the 10 am traditional service at Johnson Ferry, particularly to participate in the singing of the traditional hymns sung from the hymnal. But he said that of the two or three congregational songs that are sung in the traditional service, usually only one of them is a traditional hymn.

Was home by 9 pm. Did not watch the MLB all star game, though I saw some updates on my phone. Unlike many, I actually liked the all black National League uniforms. Max Fried got to pitch the second inning (right?), quite an honor for a pitcher named to the team as a replacement. Rookie starting pitcher Paul Skenes asked to meet Bob Uecker. Skenes glove is inscribed with 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline”.

Last month the SF Giants vs the STL Cardinals. I think that in 2021 and 2023 there was a game played in Iowa at the Field of Dreams ballpark. In 2024 the game was played at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, the oldest professional ballpark still in use. The game was televised on Fox. Both teams wore throwback uniforms. There were tributes to Willie Mays, who had just passed away, as well as for the Negro Leagues, that had played in Rickwood Field. There may have been a celebrity softball game before the real game.

This Saturday night the WNBA All Stars will play the womens Olympic Team USA. The WNBA team is comprised of players selected from among the top vote getters. I know Kate Martin received a lot of votes, but was not named to the team. Will be interesting to watch Angel Clark and Caitlin Reese playing on the same team. Wie’ll see if the all stars are able to handle and convert Caitlin’s passes into points better than her Fever teammates, instead of mishandling them into turnovers.

This morning I had therapy at PT Solutions before work.

ICHIRO SUZUKI  [SABR Bio] was the second player to be voted Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season, the 2001 AL MVP and ROY. The first to receive both honors in the same year was Boston’s Fred Lynn in 1975. There are no others besides these two. That year he was also an All-Star, won the Gold Glove, and the Silver Slugger award: AS,(1st of 10 straight); GG (1st of 10 straight): and SS (1st of 2). Ichiro compiled three fifteen-game hitting streaks in one season, the first since Cecil Cooper did it in 1980. In 2001 Suzuki’s 15+ hitting streaks were April 4-20 (15 games); 22-Apr—18-May (23 games), and Aug 3-24 (21 games).

More information continues to come out about Saturday’s assassination attempt. While the shooter was on the roof lining up his shot, three Secret Service counter snipers were below, inside that very building. The director of the Secret Service said to was decided to not put snipers on that roof, due to the ten degree slope (though other Secret Service snipers were on other roofs with greater slopes). Videos of the shooter wandering around the grounds an hour before Trump took the stage. Yet the Secret Service allowed Trump to take the stage instead of delaying his speech until the threat had been taken care of. Hard to understand exactly what went on. More questions than answers at this point.

What kind of parent supports this kind of thing? How can people turn a blind eye?
