May 31 Trivia with the Hansons

Since Will was out of town, Joel invited three friends from Chickfila to trivia (all girls). He was seated at a small table, so I grabbed the tall table in the front window, hoping someone would join me. All four Hanson’s showed up, and we named ourselves the DoorKnobs.

With school out, there were more teams and competitors in attendance than ever. At the last minute Erin’s friend Xanna had to step in as trivia master. She did a good job, but the game moved very slow. We didn’t finish until after ten.

With a few exceptions, Elizabeth and Emily answered all the questions. Elizabeth took the most active role, handing in the questions (and then sneaking peeks for the answer), and brainstorming on all the questions.

1. What animated movie, released in 2010, had a chameleon as the main character’s best friend? The girls knew: Tangled. Rango was a 2011 movie with a chameleon for a main character. Five points.

2. 1990’s: What popular electronic toy, released in 1998, was a combination robot/owl/hamster that talked? The girls huddled and came up with the right answer: the Furrby. One point.

3. What Atlanta restaurant is the single largest daily server of Coca-Cola? Craig and I knew: The Varsity. Three points.  

4. What arcade game features characters named Winky, Blinky, and Clyde? I knew: Pac Man. Five points.

5. Name the six Avengers. Elizabeth rattled them off as I wrote: Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Ironman, Hawkeye, and the Black Widow. Three points.

6. Who was Disney’s first princess? The girls knew (and Denise): Snow White. One point.

7. What country is the largest per capita consumer of coffee? Finland. We’d had this question before, and I got it wrong then as well. Only a one point miss.

8. Who wrote The Great Gatsby? We didn’t know. I blurted out the first author I could think of: F Scott Fitzgerald. Denise thought that was right. So did the girls. It was. Three points.

9. Name the only one-syllable state. Easy…Maine. Five points.

10. List the five most populous countries, in order. We got three of five: China, India, USA, Indonesia, and Brazil. I had listed Brazil, but Emily felt strongly about Japan. Before the halftime question we were in a four way tie for first. Joel’s DoorHinges got one more country than we did…giving them a two-point lead.

11. After the sun and moon, what planet is the brightest object in our sky? I knew: Venus. Six points.

12. What famous play begins with the line “Who’s there?” Denise and I thought it might be Death of a Salesman. I should’ve known the answer: Hamlet. A two point miss.

13. How long did the Hundred Years War last? With no range, this was a toughie. I knew it was more than a hundred. It was 116. A four point miss.  

14. What Great Lake is entirely inside the United States? Craig knew: Lake Michigan.

15. 1990’s: “Water Falls” was a number one hit single for who? We had no idea. Our neighbors at the bar, the Newcomers, insisted on giving us too many hints. It was TLC, the group that included Andre Rison’s house-burning girlfriend Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Four points.

16. What does the word Pinocchio mean in Italian? We didn’t know. It was “Pine Eye.” One team got it right. A two point miss.

17. What was the first US sitcom exported to Britain? Craig answered correctly: I Love Lucy. Four points.

18. What is the seventh element in the Periodic Table? Elizabeth rattled off the first six, then Nitrogen. Showing TLC, she also helped the Newcomers. Six points.

19. How many states are comprised of four different letters? While Denise wrote down a list of all fifty states, Craig and Elizabeth wrote down the correct states. I though they were consulting Denise’s list. The answer period went on forever. Elizabeth turned in eight: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Utah. We forgot about Indiana. A two point miss. Before the final question our 62 points placed us seven behind the first place Newcomers, and four behind Joel.

20. Name the state capitol: Craig knew them all. So did Joel.

With such an easy question, there was no way we could win. Next to us at the bar, the Newcomers were struggling with the capitols. We considered helping them out just so Joel wouldn’t win. But we didn’t. Based on the questions, I thought we did well.
