The 500 Home Run Club's average batting average gradually decreased ever since Jimmie Foxx joined Babe Ruth as the second member of the club. As 15 new members joined the club the average steadily declined from 342 in 1935 to 292 in 2001. Since then the average has remained relatively constant, despite the addition of nine new club members.
Frank Thomas will enter the Hall of Fame with the 8th highest batting average for a 500 Home Run Club member. His 301 career average is the highest for a club member since Hank Aaron retired in 1976.
