Photo Finish

It was the first photo finish in the history of the PRR. I didn’t see the finish of the last half mile, so I’m not sure what the runners were aware of. I would not compare it to Cowboys lineman Leon Lett showboating the last 20 yards into the Super Bowl end zone and having the ball stripped at the one yard line by Bills receiver Don Beebe. Greatest epic fail in Super Bowl history.

As I recall, there was an old Silver Skillet type place near Grady Stadium and Sig Samuels cleaners. Near the corner of Monroe and Eighth. Sig Samuels is still there but I’m pretty sure the restaurant is gone, replaced by something else. I lived right around the corner on Greenwood Avenue, and later down on Hillpine.

I never ate at the one on 14th Street, but we used to go to a place across the street called Bobby & Junes Country Kitchen, in a house painted brown. A meat and three. But for the most part at Tech we were set for lunch at the Baptist Center…aka Daisy’s Diner. Every day students and faculty flocked in to eat a decent lunch. Frozen meat or fresh fried or baked chicken. Yeast rolls every day. Mostly institutional food cooked with a loving touch by Southern hands. Seemed like in the late 70’s and early 80’s lunch only cost $1.50 or $1.75.

Monday night Matthew cooked a buffalo chicken pizza. Ceil cooked burgers for us and Anna. They all watched a movie and I watched the Braves and worked on the computer.

Tuesday night Ceil baked stuffed manicotti shells for supper, with salad and French bread. I did the dishes and watched some Braves and The Middle. W and MC when indoor rock wall climbing.

Looks like we need a new hot water heater. Last month’s natural gas bill was almost $200.00. When it rains it pours.

Will’s former classmate Holt has been on the UAB baseball team the past 2 years but hasn’t played much so far. Last summer he played in upstate New York. Right now he’s in Alaska playing for the Chugiak Chinooks. At least he’s getting some playing time, but he’s only hitting .245. The team average is only .227. Holt leads the team in triples and getting hit by pitch, but has struck out 22 times in 52 at bats – second most on the team. He is 4th on the team with a .702 OPS and second in OBP (.353).

Another teammate is playing summer ball for the Florence SC RedWolves. He is 2-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 7 appearances (6 starts / 35.1 innings). He leads the team in innings pitched, hits allowed, earned runs allowed, and most doubles and home runs allowed.  http://www.coastalplain.com/statistics/2015/flo.htm
