Even early in the season the ESPN Total QB Rating is a great indicator not only of which quarterbacks are performing well, but always which teams are doing well. Georgia’s Greyson Lambert ranks in the middle of the pack, just behind Florida’s Will Grier.
When picking games the ranking is a leading indicator. Take note of LSU’s Brandon Harris number four rank while Auburn’s Jeremy Johnson comes in 104th. Based on this rating, Clemson will have the edge Thursday night in Louisville.
And before a game when a TV announcer starts talking about how great a quarterback is, be sure to check his rating before believing him. The northeastern press thinks Penn State starter Christian Hackenberg (above left) must be good to be a four year starter, but once again he ranks near the very bottom of the ratings – even behind woeful Vandy signal-caller Johnny McCrary.
This week Clemson castoff Chad Kelly leads the nation. Expect his rating to drop as Ole Miss plays more SEC opponents. Michigan State's Connor Cook (above right) has also started strong.
