Even though the ratings are for only one game, I was anxious to review the early Total QB Ratings off ESPN.com.
Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield resumes his usual spot near the top, joined by newcomer Kelly Bryant of Clemson. UGA’s Jake Fromm and GT’s TaQuon Marshall had good starts as well. Flops include West Coast media darlings Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen.
Two key quarterbacks went down with injuries in week one: Georgia's Jacob Eason and FSU's Deondre Francois (above) . The Seminole is out for the year, casting a dark shadow on FSU's playoff hopes.
I read Sports Illustrated's profile of USC QB Darnold, and came away impressed. Not another in a line of well groomed robo-QB's, but instead a well rounded fun-loving young man - a little bit of a homebody. He picked USC because it was the closest school to home despite another QB coming in the same year, and finished high school instead of enrolling early. Part of Darnold's success can be traced back to the years he spent playing high school basketball and baseball, unlike many of his contemporaries who focused exclusively on football.
