Acts of God?

Good column by Denison this week, that I am still digesting. Glad he pointed out that the earth is under Satan’s control. People blame God for destructive acts of nature and other bad things (but forget to give God credit when good things happen).

 

DENISON: “So-called “acts of God” make it hard to trust in God. If your car broke down as often as our planet seems to, you’d blame the manufacturer. Since God not only made the universe but rules it as king today (cf. Psalm 9:8), many blame him for the suffering we face.

 

It’s worth remembering that we live on a fallen planet in which human sin has damaged God’s perfect creation (Romans 8:22). As a result, “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19) who seeks only to “steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10).”

 

Back in June I had tried to get Ceil to go Destin this past week. Good thing we didn't go, they've had the storm and rain and flooding.

 

My old Tech friend’s son is looking for a church in NE Atlanta and had asked. In my search I learned Joel Norman used to lead worship at Brookhaven Presbyterian, which is supposedly a good church. Willis goes to Trinity Church with several long-time friends. David and Charles Norman both married girls they’d met at East Cobb Presbyterian Church, and now they both attend PCA churches. 

 

SCOOP: just learned the new pastor at JFBC is a 40 year old father of three. Never been a senior pastor before but has spent the past few years being groomed for the position. Supposedly he is a “dude” able to attract the younger generation. I do not know his name yet.

 

Not sure if you ever see on TV Bryant Wright’s “Right from the Heart” commercials. Saw one this week with a young guy doing the talking instead of Bryant. That’s Austin Baker, one of several good young associate pastors at JF. Many wish they’d give the job to him.

 

REID: Jim Haskell is the pastor of newly names Bridgepoint Church. They are sharing their facilities with Northpoint Church which has several thousand members. The Northpoint Church is paying Bridgepoint big bucks to lease. They are also paying big bucks to remodel facilities and install new heating and air system.  When Fred O left, there was practically nobody attending. Jim has been growing this church in leaps and bounds. They have already had 32 new members this year. I receive the weekly report to the members from Jim. They really have a program going.

 

Jim Haskell attended FBC while I was there and he was attending Tech. Then he spent several years at Ponce while we were there also. He is a neat guy, and I really like him. His wife is a big friend of Ediths since they sang in Ponce choir together.

 

BABE RUTH  [SABR Bio] started 143 games his first six seasons, but only started four games his last sixteen seasons. All 143 were for BOS 1914-19. The last 4 were for NYY 1920-33. He won all four of those games. Ruth led the league in strikeouts five times. Led AL in K as a batter 1X w/BOS (while a P) & 4X w/NYY. When he retired, he held the career K record until it was broken by Mickey Mantle 30 years later. His first house is still standing, but his second house, the one he built, has been destroyed. The house of his birth is now a beautiful museum at 216 Emory Street in Baltimore. The first Yankee Stadium, rightfully called The House that Ruth Built” lasted from 1923 until 2008.
