More on the Sugar

Sugar Bowl didn't kick off until after 9 pm even though Rose Bowl ended before 8:45. I stayed up for the entire UGA game. Luckily the last several minutes went by quickly. Game ended after midnight and I went right to bed.

Evidently in postgame interviews QB Jake Fromm interrupted freshman WR George Pickens’ interview to make sure the WR stayed humble. Kirby wouldn't heap much praise on Pickens, who had the best bowl game for a UGA receiver since Hines Ward. The kid Pickens still has a lot of growing up to do after (1) being a key factor in the loss to SC, (2) being held out of the first half of the GT game for disciplinary reasons, and (3) being kicked out of the second half of the GT game for fighting, resulting in (4) being held out of the decisive first half of the SEC Championship Game against LSU.

All UGA in the first half but Baylor mounted a comeback in the second half, until the oft-injured Baylor QB suffered yet another concussion. Sounded serious - after an earlier concussion the QB had to spend a long time in a dark room. His career could be over. 680's Steak Shapiro has to wake up early for his radio show. Based on his comments this morning he obviously didn't see the second half. The entirety of the game was far from being all-UGA.

UGA kicker Rodrigo Blankenship finished his college career not only making all 199 of his extra points, but also all 29 of his field goal attempted under 30 yards.

The threadbare UGA offensive line did a good job despite missing three starters. Already down three running backs, scatback Cook was knocked out of the game in the first quarter. Redshirt freshman RB Zeus carried the load, and appears to be UGA's feature back of the future. Did not realize he's been born with a cleft pallet and underformed kidneys. Doctors didn't think he'd live very long.

Several UGA players have JR or III or IV or II after their names. Used to be just one or two players on a team with that, usually a star. Now half the team has them. As Syndrome said on The Incredibles: “when everyone is super – then no one is.” Dumb in that the JR or III has to do with the player’s first name “Ken Junior” not the last name. So why have it with the player’s last name? Just to give players some extra crud.

Had no problem with Bama scoring that late touchdown. Michigan has lost their last 20 road games to ranked teams. Wondering if Tues will return to Bama next year. Yesterday Bama's QB was like 12/15 passing with several TD's, including a long TD on his first pass of the game.

Max Howell was a legend. So knowledgeable about college football, as I recall. Never met him.

ESPN has one more special debuting Jan 11 to honor the 150th year of college football. This one is about the greatest players. The showed lots of great players in the commercial: Bo, Flutie, Desmond Howard, Manziel, Reggie Bush, Rickey Williams – but not THE greatest player in college history, Herschel Walker.   

These days kids post greatest ever lists, and only list players they know from the past 20-30 years. Saw a Top 5 Redskins list that ranked CB Darrell Green ahead of Sammy Baugh. Green is great, but never led the league in interceptions. Baugh once led the NFL in interceptions the same year he led the league in passing and punting.
