Saturday night Ceil and I ate supper at a new place: WZ Tavern. Some friends had recommended it. Our first time eating out since March. Turned out to not be our kind of place – a sports bar. Shouldn't have broken quarantine.
I called ahead to reserve a table on the patio. Got there and the receptionist started leading us out there, but someone else had given away the table. There was a table in the front corner of the bar area that was off by itself, so we sat there. The place was crowded with no distancing, so it was good our table was distanced. East Cobb at its worst. If this was the typical bar scene then I’m glad I’m married, with the "conversations" going on around us. A tween baseball team, all glued to their phones, parents nowhere in sight. Still younger kids glued to their phones.
Food was just so so. I’d seen BBQ chicken nachos on the menu and decided to try them. Far different than nachos at a Mexican place. Who serves nachos in a bowl? The chips were all piled up so there was no way to cover them in cheese and chicken. Grade = F. Ceil’s “East Cobb” Salad wasn’t that great either – the grilled chicken almost tasteless. We won’t be back.
Braves win five straight, including three straight from the Mets. Still so many complaints about the 3-4-5 starters Newcomb, Wright, and Touki, but they won all three games they started over the weekend. Over a team many experts predicted would compete for the pennant.. All three starters are just embarking on their young careers, especially rookies Wright and Touki. Goodness they shouldn’t be expected to be Cy Young right off the bat. Glavine and Smoltz struggled when they first started. The Braves are in first place.
Four starters (Folty, Hamels, Chachin, and Hernandez) already washed out (make it five - Soroka went down tonight. Maybe it was the new white shoes. Or the nice striped socks.). The bullpen is solid. Relievers Martin, Greene, Minter, Jackson, and others are pulling their weight. The real closer has yet to be activated. Give the kids a chance.
Dansby and Ozuna are hot. Flowers threw out a base stealer. Catcher d’Arnaud’s clutch bases-loaded double drove in three to retake the lead. Ender robbed a home run. Albies is getting healthy. Acuna hit his first home run of the season, and gave the cardboard cutout fans a curtain call.
Cepedes was slumping so he quit. The Mets have tons more problems than the Braves. Fans had wanted Atlanta to sign Cespedes. Sure glad they didn’t.
Have a good weekend? No rest for the weary over here. Work on Friday was crazy, with month end and questions from other locations. Also was working to make sure we had our ducks in a row to buy the car, no simple task.
Friday afternoon Anna met me at work, and we drove over to the Norcross CarMax to buy the car. As expected it took forever. CarMax boasts their car buying experience doesn’t take as long as regular dealerships. This made be true, but not by much. Didn’t leave until after 7:30. Got the car we wanted at a decent price, but it wore me out. Went home and crashed. Didn’t really eat any supper.
Saturday morning Anna picked me up and drove me back to work. Since she had picked me up at work I had to leave one car there when we bought the new car. On the way home I grabbed a quick lunch at CiCi’s Pizza. Worked around the house the rest of the day.
Sunday morning we worshipped on line. Guest speaker at Passion City Church, then JFBC Sunday School. Giglio was talking at the beginning of the service, talking to the tall young black guy who was to be the guest speaker. The guest had spoke at PCC before, guy by the name of Earl. I wasn’t really paying more attention to Louie because it wasn’t the sermon. Don’t think he mentioned when things would be getting back to normal. During the sermon Earl said I know my mom is watching. “What kind of mother named their baby Earl?” he asked.
The other day here in Cobb County I drove on Ebenezer Road and there were two farms. Looked beautiful. Looks to be prime property for subdivisions in the future. Fixed ham and turkey quesadillas for lunch. Needed to get Ceil’s CRV emissions tested. Drove to the East Cobb Mr. Clean Carwash where I usually go after getting all the stuff out of the car. While doing so I was bending over and pulled a muscle in my lower back. That place was closed for renovations. Had to drive to the Mr. Clean in east Roswell on the other side of 400, near the Gwinnett County line. Later we dropped off my car for an oil change and returned the car we’d borrowed for the week.
Went to a friend’s to see a missionary friend we’ve been supporting for many years. He helps develop translations into languages for people groups without Bibles. He’s lived in Germany for many years. Lee grilled burgers. Later ice cream and brownies.
Overnight my back started hurting worse. Good thing I’m working from home this week. It’s been a busy day.
CARL ERSKINE [SABR Bio] had his MLB record for most strikeouts thrown by a pitcher in a World Series game broken by Sandy Koufax in 1963. Erskine had 14 Ks against the Yankees in game 3 of the 1953 World Series. Mickey Mantle and Joe Collins each stuck out four times that day. Erskine threw two career no-hitters, the first with only one runner reaching first base, and just two reaching in the second one. Erskine’s first no-hitter was on 19-Jun-1952, relief pitcher Willard Ramsdell reached on a walk for the Cubs’ only baserunner. On 12-May-1956, only Willie Mays in the first and Alvin Dark in the fourth reached base. After his playing career, he coached a college team in his home state to conference championships four times and one time the team reached the NAIA World Series. Erskine coached baseball at Anderson College for 12 seasons, including four Hoosier Conference titles.
