Winning Ugly

Man I have a bad attitude about Georgia Tech football. Can they do anything right? Sure they won. They gained yards. Winning ugly, in more ways than one. Hard to get past those gawd-awful ugly high school uniforms, but I’ll try.

True freshman QB Jeff Sims showed flashed of greatness, but missed wide open receivers on the first two possessions. Let’s hope he improves, and doesn’t get worn down with the beatings. Let’s hope Sims isn’t like several recent GT QB’s, sitting in the pocket too long, unable to decide where to throw the ball until it’s too late then try to run the ball. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so. Sims made a few bad reads on option plays, and threw two bad first half interceptions. Tough to throw the freshman to the wolves, but pulling him from the game could be even more discouraging.

Sims appears to be an upgrade over Graham and Oliver, who now plays cornerback. By halftime Tech fans were ready to anoint Sims the next Billy Lothridge, the two interceptions, zero points and all.

Tech is good enough not to get blown out, but how many wins are on their schedule? FSU is in bad shape. They won’t go far with Blackman as their QB. He’s worse then Sims. Can’t pick out a receiver. Holds the ball too long. Dropped passes on both sides.

Penalties hurt Tech. Two killer 15 yard penalties on another possession, one an illegal block below the knees – then it happened again later in the first half.

Not much help from special teams. Jackets trot out a new kicker, who promptly gets his first attempt blocked. And the second. Kid stands there stock still until the ball is set down, before starting his approach.   HE. TAKES. TOO. LONG. He will get every kick blocked. No adjustment from the coaches. After getting a PAT blocked, he finally booted the go-ahead field goal.

The kick returner earned freshman all-America honors, but looked terrible on his first two returns. Senior punter Pressley Harbin III boomed his first punt down to the five, but the gunner ran right past the return man, allowing a good return back out past the twenty. I loves me some Pressley, but dude wears a football uniform about as bad a one can be worn.

At least ABC had Joe Tessitore calling the game. Love that guy. Analyst Greg McElroy was also on his game. But as their wont, many Tech fans didn’t want to hear outside opinions, turning down the sound on their TV’s to listen to the GT radio broadcast. Not gonna learn much about football that way. Join the real world.

Booger McFarland still downplays Clemson, instead pulling for his beloved SEC teams.

GT fans were loving on the uniforms. And the stinger stripes. The special typeface numbers. The 404 on the back collar, above the names on the backs, above the numbers. And the ATLANTA on the back bumper on the helmets, below another rally sticker and number. Sorry I had point out that all that stuff was all rendered in a different typeface. Nothing matches.

GT head coach Geoff Collins is the only D-1 head coach to wear a form-fitting t-shirt on the sidelines. Who’s he trying to impress, the players?

Duke almost beat Notre Dame in South Bend, with former Clemson QB Will Bryce leading the way. The Irish had to lower themselves and join the ACC in order to play football this year. Had to paint ACC on their hallowed grounds, and wear ACC patches on their jerseys and golden helmets. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
This morning the talk was sophomore UNC QB Sam Howell was a preseason Heisman candidate. Then he went out and threw two interceptions to Syracuse defenders. In the second half UNC pulled away – using the running game.

Wake Forest fans thought their kicker Skiba should've won the Lou Groza Award last year. Then he comes out and misses his first field goal of the year. The Demon Deacons came out in all black, thinking they were something. But those huge gold V-neck collars sure take away from the back in black look.

As expected, Clemson is taking care of business in Winston Salem. Wearing classic, simple uniforms. Take note, Georgia Tech.
