Participants read the novel “Pompeii” over a period of nine days. As tension built in the story, more and more areas of the brain lit up with activity. Brain scans showed that throughout the reading period and for days afterward, brain connectivity increased, especially in the somatosensory cortex, the part of the brain that responds to physical sensations like movement and pain.”

He had left his hometown of Detroit to play for the White Sox partly because of a $75,000 signing bonus. A $75K bonus was quite high for that era. 2 In his first season as a pro, he dominated the South Atlantic League with a 10-1 record, pitching complete games in 7 of his 15 starts. Pitching for 1962 Savannah/Lynchburg White Sox, he also impressed with an ERA of 2.49, striking out 93 in 94 innings. In his rookie season in the majors, he had teammates that included four future Hall of Fame players and a future Hall of Fame manager. On the 1962-63 CHW were Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox, Early Wynn & Hoyt Wilhelm, managed by Al Lopez.
Denison: If Christians are not more like Christ than anyone else, why follow Christ? A biblical response: our faith never promised that Christians will be made perfect in this life. Paul admitted, “I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (Rom 7:19). Others will say people who claim to follow Jesus but sin in horrific ways are not true Christians. The Bible teaches, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). If Jesus was tempted, we will be tempted (Heb 4:15). If Peter could fail, we can fail (Gal 2:11–14). This truth leads to a third fact: Becoming a Christian does not remove our free will. We were created to love our Lord and our neighbor (Matt 22:37–39), but love requires a choice. God gives us freedom to choose, and honors our freedom. When Christians sin, the fault is not with Christ but with us. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to defeat temptation (1 Cor 10:13), but we must seek his help daily (Eph 5:18).
