Hating on Phil

Another person people love to hate: Phil Mickelson. Why? Seems like a regular guy. Smiles. Acknowledges the crowd more than most. Poses for pictures with fans. Talks to them. Fought arthritis. Loves his wife. Works hard. Lopes along. Loves sports. Plays fantasy football. Knows every 50 man roster in the NFL. Maybe he’s not cutting edge any more. "Over the hill." A dad. Doesn’t hit it as far as the young guys, but no one’s got a better short game. Old. Tiger’s adversary. Phil was beloved on Kiawah. People say golfers need to be more open, talk more. Phil is one of the few to open up, and people don’t like him for it.

Now without Tiger, Phil and Tom Brady snap their fingers and a match is arranged against Bryson and Aaron Rodgers. Poor Peyton and Eli and Steph Curry are left on the outside looking in. Someone needs to get Justin Timberlake on one of these teams. Brooks Koepka seems to have a thing against Bryson, but that just makes Koepka less appealing.

Wednesday: not much to report. Worked from before 8 am through lunch, and past 5:30. Drove straight home. Ceil had made her peanut butter energy balls, adding coconut, honey, flax seed, and other stuff. Later she fixed taco meat for quesadillas.

We took Winnie outside, and wound up walking her up the street. There was a man sitting in a van outside a neighbor’s house that looked suspicious, that wound up being a dad waiting for his son to arrive back with our neighbor. I think she did a little better last night through the night. She didn’t bother us and this time stayed in our bathroom with the door open, but a gate blocking her. When my alarm went off and I got up and said hello, she was wide awake and glad to see me. C had to get her and put her in the bed, but she was crawling all over the place.

Tough night for the Grizzlies, Hawks, and Braves.

CURT SCHILLING [SABR Bio] had the most strikeouts in a season in the Modern Era among National League righties - 319 K for PHI in 1997. His total of 316 K in 2002 for ARI is second on that list. No retired pitcher in the Modern Era put together a better career strikeout-to-walk ratio. He struck out 4.38 batters for every BB he issued. He lost the first World Series game he ever played in and never got the loss for a World Series game again in his career. Lost Game 1 for the Phillies in 1993 then won his next 6 WS starts: AZ in 2001, Boston in 2004 & 2007. He credits a World Series MVP winner with making him a pitcher.  He later became a world series MVP himself. Johnny Podres (1955 WS MVP, the first time the award was given) was a PHI’s pitching coach for Schilling’s first five seasons. Schilling said, “Outside of the Lord, my wife and my father, there was no person who impacted my life more than Johnny Podres.”  Schilling was the WS MVP in 2001.  Both Podres and Schilling famously took down the Yankees in the Fall Classic.
