Beat by the Old Infield Fly

Saw where the Red Sox were victims of an "infield fly" call on a hard to catch Texas League pop fly in shallow center field, similar to the horrific call that went against the Braves in their Turner Field playoff game against the Cardinals. Since it was the Sawx, perhaps MLB will finally tighten down the rule. The rule states it must be a catch made with ordinary effort, which it rarely is out in the outfield. Where is Skip when you need him?

Hard to watch the Braves, especially in the late innings. The fans saying the GM is doing nothing aren't paying much attention – he's been making deals to bring in a new pitcher every week. Not like there are many Mariano Rivera's out there. Most teams have the same problem. Most have hard throwing chuckers hoping to get batters out by getting them to swing at junk.

I've read about starters in the old days who've served as spot relievers, including Niekro and others, especially in the postseason. Guess I should be glad I was bogged down with work and couldn't watch. 

Nowadays all the young kids will swing at a 3-0 pitch. Do you swing at a 3-0 pitch with a ten run lead? Old school manager Tony LaRussa got all mad at his player for swinging (and homering) on a 3-0 pitch. But LaRussa is the one who created the change relievers as much as you want game we're living in today. Hate the reliever every inning thing. I just can't watch every night.

Yesterday when I listed starters Fried, Morton, Anderson, Davidson, and Wilson, I had forgotten about 2019 All-Star Mike Soroka and 2021 All-Star to be Ynoa on the disabled list. Good thing GM AA had the forethought to fill the cupboard. Would be good if they could move Smylie to the bullpen. Fans quickly forget setbacks like losing two starting pitchers, not to mention 2020 Silver Slugger d'Arnauld and 2020 MVP candidate Ozuna, and Gold Glove candidate Christian Pache not being ready for prime time. The Braves are fortunate to still be in the thick of the NL East race.  

Thursday: worked from before 8 am past 6 pm. Rough day. Thought about stopping for a snack but C had supper ready: black beans and rice. Watched Jeopardy. Went to bed before ten.

Friday: had a focus group at lunchtime – drinking lemon lime sodas. $30 for 30 minutes. Monday another focus group after work. Going to Tuesday's Braves/Red Sox game with coworkers. Wednesday we have a pricing meeting. Going to be working out of town June 21 week.

PHIL COLLINS [B-R Bio] a righty. Won his major league debut on 07-Oct-1923. Next pitched in the majors in April of 1929. Led the National League in saves before it became an official statistic. Had six saves in 1933, narrowly edging Carl Hubbell and Dizzy Dean who had five apiece. In an abbreviated career of eight seasons, he managed to accumulate nine teammates who became Hall of Famers: Pete Alexander, Gabby Hartnett, Chuck Klein, Hack Wilson, Dizzy Dean, Joe Medwick, Jesse Haines, Frankie Frisch, Leo Durocher. A mere two days before Babe Ruth's death, cancer also took him home, in the city where he was born.
