Go Jump in the Lake

Will and Okie jumping in the lake.

Hopefully we can get former Cardinals pitcher Mitch Harris to come speak at Hot Stove this fall. His path to the majors, through the military could become a book and movie. His wife used to work with me.

LANCE JOHNSON [BR Bio] Born 06-Jul-1963 in Cincinnati. Debuted with the Cardinals 10-July-1987. Last game with Yankees on 27-May-2000 where he played a half inning of defense. He was the first player in MLB history to lead both leagues in hits (186 for CHW in 1995 and 227 for NYM in 1996).  Also the first MLB player to lead any league in triples for four consecutive years.(1991-1994). Despite these accomplishments, he only appeared in one All-Star game (the same year he received his lone MVP vote). The 1996 classic was Johnson's only ASG. Had a lead-off double and two more hits. He was 18th in MVP voting that year.

CY SEYMOUR  [SABR Bio] once won over twenty games and scored over forty runs in the same year. In 1898 Seymour, playing for NYG, had a pitching record of 25-19 & scored 41 times on 82 hits and 9 BB. Seven years later he led the majors in batting, hits, triples, RBIs, total bases, slugging, OPS & OPS+. He also led the National League in doubles. In his career year of 1905, playing for CIN, he batted .377, had 219 H, 21 3B, 121 RBI, 325 TB, slugged .559, had an OPS of .998 and an OPS+ of 181. His 40 2B trailed the 47 that Harry Davis had w/PHA to lead MLB. He is the only player not named Ruth to finish his career with at least 50 home runs and 50 pitching wins, with career HR = 52; career W = 61.

Denison: "the great resignation" migration is taking place. A record four million Americans quit their jobs in April. Some people deal with burnout by switching employers. Forbes is reporting that "work teams are more anxious than you think."

A lobster diver was swallowed by a humpback whale, which fortunately spit him out. You can submerge your face in ice-cold water to slow down our heart rate (a response known as the "diver's reflex"). You can pay $28 million to ride into space next month alongside Jeff Bezos and his brother, for ten minutes of "space tourism."

Falcons rookie running back Harmon Wages, in a 1968 game against the Rams. You can tell the year because (1) the gold helmet stripes were dropped in 1970, (2) no 1969 NFL 50 jersey patch, (3) by 1970 Wages had changed to a different facemask, and (4) the Falcons switched to red jerseys in 1971. In 1968 the Falcons wore black jerseys against the Rams both at home and on the road. Tough to tell which game with was.
