Friday: left work at five. Stopped off and practiced chipping for 30 minutes. C and I ate at El Porton, one of our old places near the house.
Saturday morning Will met me at Chandler Park for nine holes. He brought some glow in the dark balls to use, which were fun. Then I hit my glow in the dark ball into a thicket on the 6th tee. I didn’t play quite as well, but it was good not playing by myself. I was trying some different things. Some worked, others didn’t. Will thinks it would help if I get new golf clubs, so this weekend I was shopping around on line. I can give my old clubs to Matthew. I need to get “senior clubs” since I don’t swing that fast.
Later on a plumber came and installed our new dishwasher. Bought it at Home Depot with no interest for 18 months. Took a nap. Lentils for supper. Watched the Kevin Hart Brian Cranston movie again, which Ceil loved.
Sunday school: 36 in attendance. Sunday afternoon Matthew and Ceil went to Dekalb Farmers Market. Later C made homemade pizza for M and me. Tonight we all gather at Anna’s to celebrate her birthday. We’re eating Mexican. M is making a cake and grilled a brisket. C is making chicken enchiladas in a white sauce.
I have to drive over to Augusta for a day or two. Coworker Angie has returned to the office full time.
The Braves let that one reliever go, and the mighty Dodgers picked him up. Everyone needs relievers.
A Christian at Auburn University running for student government was cancelled for his beliefs.
“Sometimes the only way some people ever learn is through pain and suffering” - JFBC pastor Clay Smith said yesterday. Notes: there’s been a rise of hostility against those who love God’s Word. It’s going to get much worse. Many will fall away, but in the midst of this God’s word will reach every people group. The gospel is advancing. Lord examine my heart. Stir me up to do good deeds. Who do I need to forgive? Have mercy on?
R.I.P. BILL FREEHAN [SABR Bio] [Detroit Free Press Obit] who caught the ball for the last out of major league play before the start of the playoff era. He won the ’68 World Series with the Tigers. Freehan caught a pop fly off the bat of Tim McCarver for the final out of G 7. Freehan played for only one team in his 15 year MLB career, playing from 1961 to 1976. He was teammates with both Vic Wertz & Mark Fidrych. Freehan was an All-Star eleven times, including for ten consecutive seasons from 1964-73 plus 1975. In 1974 the AL All Star catching contingent consisted of Thurman Munson (starter), Carlton Fisk, Ed Herrmann, Darrell Porter, and Jim Sundberg. It was the only AS appearance of Herrmann's career.
Freehan once caught a record 15 innings of an All-Star game, on 11-Jul-1967. Every AL position starter, except the second-baseman and shortstop, also played the entire game. Freehan was awarded a Gold Glove five straight seasons, from 1965-69. He hit his 200th and final career home run off George Brett’s brother, CHW’s Ken Brett on 24-Aug-1976. Freehan was the head baseball coach at the University of Michigan for seven years after leaving the majors, from 1989-95. Describing life as a major leaguer, he once said, “The real name of the game is pack and repack.”
