My mom passed away late last night. I was able to be there for several of her last few hours. The bacteria had spread and was worse than I’d imagined. She had been talking, drinking, and eating in the ER but later grew worse, breathing irregularly. She’d been in a lot of pain over the past several years, and the bacteria in her body was spreading quickly. Surgery was no real option. No details yet about a funeral or anything. We’ll see.
Crazy Tuesday. Busy morning at work. Left out around noon and headed to Macon. Was on the phone most of the way down there. When I arrived my mother was in route from the ER to a room. I walked around the outside of the hospital to the front entrance, and made it to the room before they wheeled her in. A doctor my sister knew stopped by. He’d been there when my father died. We had been making hospice arrangements, but the doctor said she didn’t have that long to live.
I tried to make sure someone was in the room at all times. The hospital was nice enough to set up a facetime so we could log in for a video link. That worked well on my phone, but it might’ve taken time away for others, who had trouble logging on.
They made more progress on the flooring installation yesterday. Not sure they’ll finish until Friday. Monday they completed the upstairs bedroom and dining room. Yesterday the big living room plus some repair work on the kitchen floor, that had to dry. Still have to do the foyer, kitchen / den, and downstairs bedroom (Ceil’s art studio).
Was able to talk to all three kids yesterday. Matthew landed a job at a BBQ place near West End, at a new development called The Met Atlanta. Looks like a cool place.
Great that John has been able to go home. Still he has a long recovery ahead of him. I guess they attend FBC Roswell. We see Scott and Robin Condra at JFBC.
MICKEY COCHRANE [SABR Bio] was known to retire would-be base stealers with throws while still in the crouch. Mickey Mantle’s father was a big fan. Mantle received his given name in honor of Cochrane. Cochrane’s “Mickey” was a nickname (Gordon Stanley Cochrane). Mantle’s “Mickey” was the name on his birth certificate (Mickey Charles Mantle). Cochrane was the first catcher elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America to the Hall of Fame, in 1947.
Norm McDonald passed away yesterday, after battling cancer for several years. One of my favorites. Wicked funny. SNL. The Middle. A great guest on Letterman. Played Coronel Sanders on recent KFC commercials.
