Division Champions. Again.

Glad to see the Braves clinch last night. I like how they celebrate out in the fountain in centerfield. Freid was won 7 straight, with an ERA of 1.00 since August 1st, and a 3.04 ERA for the year. Braves won their 4th straight division championship without Acuna, Soroka, and Ozuna. Joel and Charles Norman were at the game, along with a few other friends.

A kitten scurried along beam in upper deck at Truist Park before yesterday’s Atlanta Braves-Philadelphia Phillies game.

Thursday: ordered dinner last night from the Golden Nugget seafood restaurant. Ceil got shrimp. My only choices were a burger or chicken strips, which I ordered. Also a baked potato and cole slaw, and delicious sweet hushpuppies.

Anna drove up last night. She heads out early Saturday to go to the Arkansas@UGA game. Anna has been attending that new church that Johnson Ferry had started up, not far from y’all as the crow flies, near the MARTA yard behind Piedmont. That’s where Ashley Corbitt was going.

Was hard to get to sleep. My mind was racing about work and other stuff. Finally nodded off into a deep sleep. Grits and eggs for breakfast.

Today is Ceil’s mother’s 90th birthday. A big gathering in scheduled for tonight, with lasagna and chicken tetrazzini on the menu.

Down to 24 work emails, which is still way more than usual. All will take time to work through. Stresses me out. Earlier this week I had 49 emails in my in box to process, after deleting and filing and replying to all the easy ones.

Next weekend we were headed to an arts festival northeast of Asheville, but it was just cancelled due to covid.

Ten ways to get a good night's rest.

Denison: in a brilliant article for our website, Dr. David Dykes discusses Benjamin Franklin's 13 "moral habitudes" (crosses between habits and attitudes) to which he was passionately committed.

1. Eat not to dullness. Drink not to elevation.

2. Avoid trifling discussions. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself.

3. Keep things in order. Put everything in its place.

4. Resolve to do what you should, without fail.

5. Waste nothing, by frugal.

6. Don’t waste time. Always be doing something useful. Cut out unnecessary actions.

7. Be sincere. Think innocently and justly.

8. Wrong no one.

9. Do everything in moderation. Avoid extremes.

10. Do not tolerate uncleanliness.

11. Live a tranquil life.

12. Be chaste.

13. Be humble. Imitate Jesus.

Article
: Justin Tucker broke the NFL record for the longest field goal this past Sunday. The kick itself was ridiculous: an NFL-record 66-yard boot, that skyrocketed off the crossbar and bounded through the uprights to give the Baltimore Ravens a 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. The game-winner added to Justin Tucker’s legacy as the best kicker in NFL history. Tucker is also the league’s most accurate kicker ever and has a knack for hitting big kicks. The 66 yards the kick traveled is farther than the poor Bears offense gained all day (47) in a 26-6 loss to the Browns. The record kick was almost one-upped by Arizona kicker Matt Prater, whose 68-yard field goal attempt for the Cardinals came up short, only to be returned for a touchdown by Jaguars special-teamer Jamal Agnew in the 31-10 Cardinals win. Guess who held the record before Tucker? Prater, of course, who booted a 64-yarder for the Broncos in 2013. In 1970, Tom Dempsey booted a then-NFL-record 63-yard field goal to...also beat the Lions, 19-17, just as Tucker did Sunday.

FYI: year ago Prater was the subject of one of my first-ever blog posts, when he missed a crucial kick in overtime of UCF’s Christmas Day bowl game, back when George O’Leary was their head coach.

CURT SCHILLING [SABR Bio] career WAR is higher than any pitcher eligible, but not in the Hall of Fame (Roger Clemens excepted) Schilling’s WAR was 79.5, Clemens 138.7. MLB says the range of WAR for the average HOF player is 50-70. Curt was the last National League pitcher to strike out 300 batters in consecutive seasons (before Randy Johnson), with 319 in 1997 and 300 in 1998, pitching for the Phillies. He has World Series rings with different franchises, in 2001 with Arizona and 2004 and 2007 in Boston. The first major league game Schilling ever attended was Roberto Clemente’s last, on 03-Oct-1972 in Pittsburgh.

CY YOUNG  [SABR Bio] threw the first perfect game of the twentieth century. Perfecto = 05-May-1904. For reasons unknown, opposing manager Connie Mack did not pinch hit for pitcher Rube Waddell (career .161 average) in the 9th. Waddell flied out to end the perfect game. Young won the pitching Triple Crown in the American League’s inaugural season. In 1901, Young led the new league in strikeouts with 158 and led both leagues in wins with 33, and in ERA (1.62). Young won both games of a double header on the last day of his rookie season. On October 4, 1890 he won 5-1 & 7-3.

And I say to you,

that every careless word than men shall speak,

they shall render account for it in the day of judgement.”

- Matthew 12:36
