Evander Holyfield spent over ten million building a huge mansion south of the airport, then spend a million a year on maintenance. Rapper Rick Ross bought it for him for less than six million, rents it out to movie crews to recoup millions, and cuts his own grass. Loves the experience and recommends it to others. Of course he has a huge John Deere tractor with tinted windows on his cab, and he partakes of his own signature brand of cannabis as he mows.

Ross recently saved $10,000.00 by cutting down ten trees himself. Ross owns over 25 WingStop franchises and is involved in other business ventures, and recently bought Amare Stoudamire’s mansion in Florida. Instead of private jets, Ross flies Delta whenever possible. He is such a businessman that Forbes magazine recently profiled him.

Saturday morning I golfed with the other two Candler Park regulars. Drove straight home and did more cleaning out upstairs. Filling up my car with giveaway stuff. Not sure if the dust got to me, as I had a headache the rest of the day.

Sunday night dinner was a Mexican white bean chili, which included chicken. Had leftovers on Sunday.

Braved the rain for Sunday School and worship. Sunday night we ate at the Cho’s house. Cindy always cooks a delicious traditional Korean dinner, which included seasoned baked Salmon, chicken and vegetables, rice, and Korean pancakes. Also in attendance: Reid & Noelle, Rob & Nancy, and Lee & Nancy.

A young lady from our Sunday School class shared her amazing testimony. She had grown up in China. At 14 she joined her mother in the US. After GT she worked in an architecture firm in Paris, but returned to Atlanta and started buying up run down houses, fixing them up, and renting them out. Her mom challenged her to do more than watch TV, so she started ordering best-selling books to read. Not knowing it was a Christian book, she ordered The Purpose Driven Life. She read the Bible but it didn’t make sense. Alone on a boat in Lake Alatoona she  asked God to reveal Himself to her. Just then thousands of small fish swarmed all around the boat. This girl is a no-nonsense serious person. Now she’s training to be sent out as a missionary. Having completed a seminary-like program taught at Church of the Apostles, she now helps teach there. An amazing story.

Working from home again today. C cooked me a grilled chicken sandwich for lunch.

KEN BRETT  [SABR Bio] was a well-traveled veteran. Ironically he got lost on the way to his first professional team. He played for ten teams in the majors but got lost on his way to play for the level A Red Sox in Oneonta, NY in 1966. Brett set a record for pitchers when he homered in four consecutive starts. He hit a home run on 09-Jun; 13-Jun; 18-Jun: & 23-Jun-1973. Following the 1967 World Series Brett spent six months in the U.S. Army Reserve and missed spring training in 1968.

I did learn she served as an advisory school board member for the Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Maryland, in 2010 and 2011. My beef: this article - How to Spot an American Tourist Abroad. Sounded interesting…until I started reading it. Here in America you can sure spot people from other countries. If author Lisa Wells is so embarrassed about being from America, perhaps she should move. Just the condescending way it is written, as if she would never be guilty of indulging in typical American behavior. My response to most of these is – “So?” Or “who cares?” Is this really a big deal? 

1. You demand cold drinks.

2. You wear a baseball cap. Hey, baseball is even more popular in Japan. Nothing wrong with wearing a cap.

3. You wear white socks. Sneakers are also American (aka uncool).

4. You have perfectly aligned teeth.

5. You clap/shout/whistle/make noise. “Tourists will clap for a server.”

6. Slang, like “bro” and Sup!”

7. You’re sporting a fanny pack. But”they’re practical” and “Americans do not actually wear fanny packs any more”. Just something to add to her list.

8. You don’t know the first thing about FIFA. Not really true any more.

9. You’re eating on the run.

10. You need a metric conversion calculator to know the speed limit.

11. You’re obsessed with McDonalds.

12. You enjoy a glass, or two.

13. You are shocked by nudity.         

14. You are overly friendly with strangers.

15. You share TMI with others. “We think we’re special.”

16. You’re a man wearing shorts.

17. You’re a generous tipper.

18. You talk with an American accent.  

19. You try to disguise your accent.

20. You only speak English. Yet it’s okay for immigrants to the US to not learn English.

21. You are kinda loud. “It’s obnoxious.”

22. You don’t know the customers. Visitors (and immigrants) to our country have no interest in our customs, like crossing at crosswalks, etc etc etc.

23. You go wild when you meet another American abroad.

24. You order coffee to go. Offends the European barista. And don’t go to Starbucks – they’ll KNOW you’re an American then. We don’t want that.

25. You pack plenty of Purell. Except the trend is catching on now.

BOB GIBSON  [SABR Bio] was once offered to sign with basketball’s Harlem Globetrotters. The Creighton Bluejays’ basketball star played with the Globetrotters when they visited Omaha. He made quite an impression. Tim McCarver credits him with helping him to overcome racial prejudice. McCarver still credits Gibson with many life insights. He is honored in at least four Halls of Fame: Creighton University, Missouri Valley Conference & the Omaha Sports in addition to Cooperstown.

Saturday Golf

Beautiful morning for golf at Candler Park, with regulars Robert and Anthony. Was a couple degrees colder than expected, but I was prepared. Anthony showed up in shorts, not wanting to wake family rooting around for warmer attire. We teed off shortly after 7 am. Hit one ball the entire round. No mulligans.

1. As usual I started slowly. Several cruddy shots. Decent six iron. Good 5 wood. As usual I chipped over the elevated green. Then an okay chip and good lag putt.
2. Thought I hit a good tee shot but it didn't go as far as I thought. Whiffed on a couple of swings, then my chip hit the fringe and stopped on the green. I think I two putted for bogey.
3. Good six iron down the hill. Long putt rolled past the hole. Missed the comebacker. Another bogey.
4. Three wood off tee sailed right. Good chip down hill onto green. Three putt. Double bogey.
5. Three wood off tee. Flubbed my first chip. Long putt across green. Three more after that.
6. Worm burner off tee. At least it was straight. Had trouble getting out of the mud. Four flubs. Finally a decent six iron. Eight iron rolled across green to the back fringe. Three putt.
7. Driver off tee. Hit it straight, halfway up the hill. Shot of the day. Decent 5 wood past the top of the hill. Might've flubbed a shot, then hit one to within chipping range. A good chip and two putt.
8. Driver off tee. Sailed right and got hung up in the third tree. Sliced a 5 wood down the hill. Flubbed a chip, then a long putt, and two more. Double bogey.
9. Three wood off tee. Didn't hit it good, but got a decent roll. Flubbed one 7 iron, then hit a nice seven across to the back of the sloping green. Terrible putt, then two more. Finished up around 8:30.

Whataburger is overrated.

Last night I worked until 6:30. So many little things to do. The fact that I am caught up just means its time to do all my regular stuff again. Plus its month end, so I have several things to do before Tuesday.

Didn’t eat supper until after eight. Baked breaded chicken tenders with rice pilaf, butterbeans, and tossed salad. Stayed up late deleting emails.

New low weight this morning. The bad thing is that I am sure to eat more while working from home. Got to sleep an hour later because I was working from home. Need to start working out in the mornings. Didn’t realize the boss was going to be at the office today. He brought in apple fritters, our favorite pastry. Hadn’t told him that I am trying to cut back.

Matthew changed out some broken doorknobs. He is quite the handyman. Not long ago he helped fix Will’s old SUV when we had it at the house. Unlike Anna, who is more like me...

MICAH OWNINGS  [B-R Bio] holds the Georgia state high school record for most home runs. The pride of Forsyth County. He hit 69 dingers, which was fourth in the entire country, per Wikipedia. Owings was the first pitcher since Whitey Ford to have multiple four hit games in the same season, in 2007. By OPS+, Micah was 33% better with the bat than a position player who shares his last name (no relation). His OPS+ of 106 is higher than any that Chris Owings (career OPS+ of 73) has posted in any season with more than 50 at bats. 

The question of the day was what number did you wear when you played sports, and why? as I've said before, my favorite player was Jim Kiick - slow but hard-nosed.

Busy at work again. Wednesday night I worked past six. Had written a note to remind me to stop for gas on the way home. Car was showing about 60 miles of gas remaining. Called Ceil, who said M was cooking burgers. When I remembered I needed gas I had already passed the last station on my route. Could’ve changed my route, but decided to wait until morning.

M had bought some good, tasty ground beef, with more fat than Ceil usually likes to eat. He baked fries as well. Saw final jeopardy. Before going to bed early we saw on the news at Russia had attached Ukraine.

Was almost to work this morning when I remembered I needed gas. Was down to 14 miles on the counter. Filled up for $3.229 per gallon. Now I hear its already up to over $3.45. Damn those Russians. That’s it, I’m going to start working from home.

They’re still filming BASECAMP over by the river. Now Will says they’re filming near him as well. Just learned its the filming of the new Beany Baby movie. And a mayo commercial is being filmed at Atlantic Station. From now on I'll be in the know.

Last night Anna ate at Kimball House in downtown Decatur, a fancy place hard up by the MARTA tracks. Seafood.

According to caddie Stevie Williams, when Tiger Woods was first to play the new Nike ball, he had a distinct advantage over his fellow competitors.

MIKE HAMPTON  [B-R Bio] was once traded from the Mariners to the Astros. After debuting in SEA, he was traded to HOU in the 1993-1994 offseason. In high school, Hampton was recruited as a defensive back for football powerhouses Notre Dame, Miami & Florida State. He struggled with multiple elbow and shoulder surgeries throughout his career. Missed two full seasons in 2006 & 2007.  Was expected to miss all of 2010 but came back for exactly 4-2/3 innings with Arizona. His lone World Series start was notable for a throw by the other pitcher. Hampton was the starter in Game 2 in the 2000 WS (his only season with NYM), when Roger Clemens threw a broken bat in the direction of Mike Piazza.

During the 2016 presidential election campaign, Politico.com published an article titled “Donald Trump is Shocking, Vulgar…” Accurate points were made. Warning: language in the article is rated PG-13. An excerpt:

2nd Bite: Ponko Chicken

Late Sunday afternoon I drove Ceil around on her errands. We ate at Ponko Chicken, on Roswell Road near Chastain Park. This time I ordered the BBQ tenders, which were just as good as the original recipe. Fries were good. Maybe I’m thinking all this food is so good because I’ve been eating so little these days. Unfortunately the pre-packed salad wasn’t as good as the freshly prepared salad bowl we’d received in Alpharetta.

Wednesday: not much to report. Ceil was at The Table on Delk. I worked past 5:30 and didn’t get home until almost 7 pm. Ate leftover meatballs and butterbeans. Pulled out a new bottle of Heinz catsup. As usual it was pulling teeth to get the catsup out of the bottle. Squeeze bottles are so much more convenient.

Watched a Jeff Foxworthy retrospective on TV. Interesting story. Featured Larry the Cable Guy, with quotes from Jay Leno – who first got Jeff on The Tonight Show. Also the new episode of Man in the Arena, about Julian Edelman and Tom Brady. Edelman had been discovered when his team played in Happy Valley, and scouts went to see a Penn State player. 

Was tired from the long day and fell asleep on the couch, leaving stuff undone. Went to bed at ten.

They’re filming some movie down by the river in Roswell. Code name BASECAMP. Haven’t seen any info on it anywhere. A real picturesque spot. Maybe when I retire I will be an extra in the movies. Says on AJC.com that at any one time there are at least 50 movies/TV/etc filming around Atlanta.  I was in The Sluggers Wife and The Rookie, but unpaid crowd scenes are for the birds. Can read a book while waiting around for the shoot.

Another justification to splurge on new sneakers: (1) I’m spending less on food (2) been working lots of overtime (3) got some focus group money and (4) Venmo money from Anna, and (5) didn’t get a Valentines present. Still wavering on the Vans Ultrarange. High top or low? I just missed out on a sale. Puma Cyle Hardwoods: cheaper red back, or more expensive all black? Don’t I have enough black shoes? (1) adidas Response (2) Nike golf (3) New Balance (4) Crocs loafers. Did I get rid of my black adidas Campus? Need to give away my all black Huaraches. They’re in my trunk, but it’s hard to let go. Same with my all white Stan Smith knockoffs.

DON DRYSDALE  [SABR Bio] his shutout performance was noted in Robert F. Kennedy’s final speech. Drysdale carried a recording of Kennedy’s speech with him until the day he died. He was the last active major leaguer who had been a Brooklyn Dodger. Drysdale joined the Dodgers in Brooklyn in 1956 and was still in the majors in 1969. However, while he may have been the last Brooklyn Dodger pitcher in MLB, further research shows that utility player Bob Aspromonte played a full year with the NYM in 1971 after having had 1 PA with Brooklyn in 1956 (he struck out). While Drysdale is mentioned in a Tom Waits song, opposing batters didn’t find him a sight for sore eyes so much as a cause of sore bodies. Drysdale is the only non-Yankee mentioned in the line “let’s toast to the old days and DiMaggio too, Drysdale and Mantle, Whitey Ford and to you”.  Drysdale’s reputation for hitting opposing batters was well known.

2nd Bite: Scoville Hot Chicken

Saturday evening Matthew and I ate at Scoville Hot Chicken. I got the “plain” sandwich. M got the second to the hottest. Both were huge, and good. We both took half home. The fries were excellent as well. Fast service. Hate having to tear open the little packs of catsup.

After Scoville's we bought shirts at the Lassiter Goodwill. Got a cool Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels t-shirt. Watched the old rom-com “Killers” again, filmed in Atlanta.

Sunday morning for breakfast I ate the Buc-ee’s cinnamon roll I’d bought. Lunch was the rest of the Scoville sandwich. Went to the office and worked five hours.

Monday: no small group. Worked through lunch and left at 5:30. Ceil cooked her favorite meal: spaghetti. With meatballs. Also salad. She tried a different recipe and it wasn’t quite as good. Meatballs were tasty enough. Ground beef no turkey or sausage.

As everyone else has mentioned already, today is 2/22/22. At work when I have to key in a due date, for the past few months I’ve been typing this date. I’ve had to move on to 052222, and for the rest of the year it will be the 22nd of the month.

Golf this morning at Candler Park. Teed off at 7 am and finished nine holes around 8:20, oftentimes hitting two balls. The ground was kinda squishy but okay. No gloves or hat – it was 53 degrees. One other regular was somewhere behind me, but I never saw him. After typing it up, I realized it was perhaps the best nine holes I’ve ever played, shot-wise (even if I did forget to stop my watch until the fourth hole).

1. Used a driver off the tee. I couldn’t see where it went. Found in fairway slightly on the right side. Hit two good 5 woods that both stayed in the fairway, leaving me a chip shot to the green. Two chips both sailed over the elevated green. Just a tough shot. Pitched one back that rolled off the green back down the hill. I moved on to the second tee.

2. Five wood off tee. I actually saw the ball in flight. Low with a slight slice. Left me a chip to the green. Hit two shots, both semi-close to the hole. Missed the longer par putt but made the next one for bogey.

3. Six iron off tee. First try seemed okay but might’ve rolled off to the left. I hit a provisional that stopped inches short of the green, First shot was just a few feet away. Made the par putt.

4. Three wood off tee. First shot I found pin high, just off to the right of the green. Second shot had sliced frther right. Two long lag putts both rolled close, but I missed the par putt.

5. Used 3 wood off tee. Both in fairway. Two good chips. Missed par putts but made the bogey.

6. Hit driver off tee. Both sailed right. From there I hit two decent 5 wood shots, one further and better than the other. From there I hit two more 5 woods, both to the fringe. Two putt for another bogey. Longest hole on the course, and I played it better than usual.

7. Hit driver off tee again. One worm-burner, the other sliced to the right side of the fairway. From there I hit two good 5 woods up to the top of the hill, one a little further than the other. My approach wasn’t too far from the green, in position for a manageable chip. Just then the greenskeeper moved in to maintain the green. I moved on to eight.

8. My drive sliced right, but rolled left down toward the middle of the fairway. Hit two good 5 woods down the hill, one to the right fringe. Hit two long lag putts, both decent. Missed the par putt and settled for another bogey.

9. Hit two good 3 woods off the tee. Both had decent length. Good chip that rolled off the left side of the green. Decent uphill putt. Sunk the putt for bogey.

Ceil went down to see Shivonne today. Several things didn't go well at work today. Some of my frustration is showing through. Not enough time to do excellent work, and when that happens the lack of preparation shows through.

Saw where Michigan head coach Juwan Howard was suspended for the rest of the regular season – six games. Should be a learning experience for him. Yes he deserved the suspension, though others thought the mere suggestion of punishment was too much. The world we live in.

Conversely a Christian legislator in Europe is on trial in an effort to limit his free speech, so others won’t have to be exposed to a Biblical worldview. In North Carolina an effort is being made to keep a congressional candidate off the ballot because of perfectly legal actions he took last year, that others did not like.

First Bite: Dub's High on the Hog BBQ

Ate lunch Saturday at Dub’s High on the Hog BBQ in downtown Calhoun. Had seen where bobblehead bud Mike M had eaten there back in December. Must be so much of an institution that it didn’t bother with a sign. BBQ beef plate with Brunswick stew and potato salad. Decent meal. SML ordered the pork plate, with baked potato. Three desserts to choose from, but none that catch my fancy. Great service. Steady stream of customers.

Had risen early Saturday not for golf, but to check out Buc-ee’s up north of Adairsville on I-75. Saw John Watkins. Met up with Sharon Langley, who has a great attitude despite having stage 4 cancer. Her attitude and faith is helping her beat the disease.

I ate out every meal this weekend. Friday I stopped by Wendy’s on the way home from work, after working past 5:30. Chicken sandwich. Also stopped by two thrift stores.

Herschel spoke at FBC Atlanta yesterday. Also in attendance: Santa Claus, who stood in line to get his picture with the star RB.

Kirby Smart: Georgia QB Stetson Bennett ‘a little bit better’ than Notre Dame’s Rudy. Last Friday Stetson threw out the first pitch before UGA’s season opener. Before the game he took BP with the team – and hit one out of the park. Many made the joke that one of the five star backup QB’s could’ve done a better job.

Saw that altercation with Juwan Howard, the head coach at Michigan, his alma mater. Howard was a member of the fab five that lost to UNC in the final four their freshman year. Before the season I heard an interview with Howard, perhaps with Eli Manning, not sure. I like Juwan and hated that he got in the altercation, though he appeared to be at fault. His lack of coaching experience may have contributed to the situation, though for sure as a player and assistant he’s been on the bench for a ton of games.

I guess for a scrub just getting into a game for a few seconds has to be a thrill, but you hate for a coach to call time out just to get starters for with just a tiny bit of time remaining. The best coaches know how to get starters out of the game. Will’s high school coach was great at that, getting everyone to play while keeping the game moving.

OSCAR CHARLESTON [SABR Bio] the Hall of Famer, was a member of the 24th infantry in the Philippines during WWI. The 24th Infantry Regiment was a unit of the U.S. Army, active 1869-1951, & 1995-2006.  Before 1951, it was primarily made up of black American soldiers. Charleston led the Negro National League in home runs in 1921 (15) & 1922 (19). He led the Eastern Colored League in 1924 (15), 1925 (20) & 1927 (13). It was said, “He’s so fast that he makes Ty Cobb look like Ham Hyatt”. Although Ham Hyatt managed eleven stolen bases and 23 triples during his 7-year MLB career, his name alone makes him sound like a plodder.

First Bite: Buc-ee's

Rode up to check out Buc-ee's Saturday morning, up I-75 between Adairsville and the Calhoun outlets. Left there with some cherry maple beef jerky, jumbo diet Mtn Dew, cinnamon roll, Buc-ee's dark chocolate covered almonds, and a jar of Buc-ee's BBQ sauce. 

A pretty cool Buc-ee's print shirt. But not for twenty five bucks. Maybe I'll stumble across one at a thrift store. 

A full line of Lodge cast iron products, which used to be made near Chattanooga. Buc-ee's probably isn't the cheapest place to buy them. 

You know its a tourist trap when they have a pressed penny machine.

Would've been a waste of money to bring this home to my coffee snobs. The Buc-ee's coffee area was larger than the soft drink station.

Plenty of interesting people passing through, 

so many that I didn't even notice these four.

Good place to catch covid.

Picked up a swimsuit for Ceil.

They also have beach umbrellas and chairs.

I know a puppy who deserves this award.

Buc-ee's has everything you need. Clothes, housewares, wine, beer, fudge, ice cream, and...

You can never have enough BBQ sauce. Decent price. No high frucose corn syrup. Fresh jerky, with no preservatives.

Always interested in Coach K and Duke games. Not gonna be the same next year. Every night I usually check to see what games are on TV.

Saw ads for this new made for cable TV movie about Magic Johnson and the Lakers, with actors playing Buss, Magic, his mom, Riley, Kareem, etc. But it is on HBO so I doubt I can see it.

Lincoln Highway was a good novel. Just finished it. Now on to Dolly Parton, Songwriter. .

I was noticing in Jere's obit that he was about 3 years behind my mother at North Fulton. I learned a bunch from reading the obit.

Left work at 520 on Tuesday and headed to small group. Stopped by Wendy's for their version of the Chickfila sandwich. About like the McDonalds version.

Wednesday morning when I went outside to go to work I almost steered the car to the golf course, since it was 45 degrees. I did get a decent amount of work done that morning.
