Wrecking Ball: GT BSU

NEWS: just learned the old Baptist Center at Georgia Tech will be torn down in June, and a new 5 story Baptist Center will be built in its place.  The first two stories will have meeting space and offices, as well as a coffee shop. The top floors will have student housing. Not sure yet if the SBC home mission board is paying for this, or if GT is taking over the property to build a dorm in exchange for giving Baptist space in the building.

The old Baptist Center was built in the 70’s. When I was at GT over 40 years ago there were people who used to talk about the building before it. Not sure if the Presbyterian Center next door will be torn down as well.

Worked from home this past Friday. That evening we attended the JFBC missions conference dinner, catered by Righteous Que BBQ. Good stuff. The gym (2 basketball courts) and downstairs youth area (40+ tables of 8 = 320). Special quest from Africa spoke. Late getting home.

Saturday AM golf, then I stopped by Goodwill to unload my car of giveaway items. Got a free donut at Duck Donuts and stopped by the bank. Stopped by the house. Then took friend Nancy to pick up the used 2017 Ford F150 they’d bought. Only 15K miles. A good deal. Unless gas tops four bucks a gallon. Whoops.

Ran one more errand before heading home. Laundry. Later we drove down to babysit, while W&MC went out to eat. Shivonne was tired, and slept most of the time. Before leaving Will cooked us a cauliflower soup and made coffee. We were at Will’s house so I wasn’t an expert on his TV. Also White Collar. Late getting home.

I kept up with Duke/UNC. Lots of celebrities in attendance, including NBA commissioner Adam Silver (who went to Duke), Braves outfielder Joc Pederson, and Jerry Seinfeld (who has two kids at Duke). I saw some of the extended coverage on Coach K. Michael Jordan was there as well. When MJ picked UNC, the first year Duke head coach sent him a letter. Coach K later coached MJ in the Olympics.

JFBC Sunday School and worship. SS speaker was doing amazing work in India. C cooked spaghetti for lunch. Another late night out, third in a row.

During a service Sunday at Passion City Church a transformer blew, and the building went dark. They continued to worship by the light of the few emergency lights that went on, singing songs acapella.

Worked from home again yesterday. Went to the Y and lifted weights. Workouts 7 of the past 8 days.

Saturday morning golf: I teed off right around 7 am with my two regular partners.

1. Made good contact with my 3 wood. Found my ball in the right “rough” kinda under a tree. My backswing was not obstructed, and made good contact with my 5 iron. But the ball hit a limb and caromed left to the middle of the fairway. Pulled my new Braves cover off my hybrid, and hit a great shot. Flubbed my chip left, into the sand trap. Then I realized I hadn’t secured the Braves head over, and had to jog back down the fairway to retrieve it. My chip out of the trap was almost perfect. Knocked in the putt for a double bogey.

2. Hybrid off tee headed right. Good thing it was short. Chip rolled off the back of the green. So did my mulligan. Made good contact on my return try, but it sailed over the green as well.

3. My 6 iron off the tee went where I aimed - left. Anthony said my chip was unlucky. It rolled toward the slats guarding the 4th hole’s tee box - but the ball rolled between the slats. Took relief, but my chip poked right. Three putt for a six.

4. Nice 3 wood off tee rolled off the back of the green. Trying to make sure I’m turning my hips, which is adding distance. Three putt for bogey.

5. Another good 3 wood off tee, straight and almost to the fringe. Three putt for bogey.

6. Stuck with the 3 wood from the tee. This time it drifted right. Playable lie. Hit a flubbed worm-burner that got a decent roll. Another flub. Great hybrid almost to the fringe. Three putt for double bogey.

7. Three wood sliced right. Decent chip out from under the trees that rolled across the fairway. Great hybrid, then a good chip onto the green. Three putt for double bogey.

8. Hit my 3 wood straight down the middle, with a little of the extra distance from the hip turn. Got a compliment from my playing partner. Of course I flubbed my approach. My chip rolled through the green almost to the creek. A good chip and okay lag putt, then two more for another double.

9. Used my 3 wood again. Drifted right. Had to poke a 5 iron from under the tree, but it sailed almost to the first tee. I called it a day. Finished at 8:25.
