Habits of Logical People

As I’ve said many times, I type up notes from some of the articles I read and post them so I can better internalize them myself. And add content for this here blog.

Article: Habits of logical people.

1. Be attentive. Listen.

2. Get the facts straight.

3. Communicate clearly.

4. Communicate effectively.

5. Be mindful of the origins of ideas. They don’t take credit for something that they didn’t create, instead give credit to where credit is due.

6. Match ideas to facts.

7. Put ideas into understandable words.

8. Avoid vague and ambiguous language. Use precise language. Define what you’re talking about. Avoid words like “it” and “they”.

9. Avoid evasive language.

10. Seek to arrive at the truth.

11. Don’t let emotion run your life.

One of the Braves announcers was a tending topic of Twitter today, and it wasn't Chip Carey.

Sermon notes: Jephthah: the Faith of a Fool

By Lee Taylor – Heather Swilley’s husband had to step in to preach for youth pastor Logan Grantham, who went to the hospital with an unexpected illness. Lee studied improv, so this should be right up his alley. I kinda have a man-crush on Lee, dad-bod and all. Last week after church C and I had a long conversation with Heather Swilley Taylor. Grover has the first stages of Alzheimer’s. She works as a realtor with brother Curt. Caleb’s mother Mary works at JFBC as Heather’s husband Lee’s assistant.

Judges 11:1-40

Three truths of Israel’s and Jephthah’s faith Judges 10:6 sets the scene: the people of Israel worshipped 7 different gods.

V 15 please deliver us.

1. A misplaced faith v 1 -4 they wanted Jepht to be their leader. He was a great warrior surrounded by a bunch of nerdowells. The Israelites put their faith in Jepht as opposed to God.

2. A transactional faith, not a transformative faith.

V 29-33 the Spirit of the Lord was on Jephthah, but he had a terrible idea, took a terrible vow. The Ammonites were subdued. “God if you do this, I will do this.”

V 34 saw his daughter, sent her out for 2 months. Became a tradition in that region. More foolishness. Shouldn’t have followed through with the horrible vow, sacrificing children and such, mixing the other religions with God’s word. Why?

Reminds of Deut 6:4 hear oh Israel the Lord is one, love the Lord with all your heart, and teach your children all the time. Write it on your hand and your doorpost. This is the cycle we need to follow, so our kids will follow God generation after generation.

3. A pure faith. We love steak because it’s all meat. What is our faith: steak or a mixture, like a hot dog? God calls all people to know Him fully.

Lee: not just Bible study but also Bible doing.
