Got home after 6 pm. Pasta and salad for supper. Watched a cheesy movie.
M drove straight to Anna’s, where he and Caleb made shrimp and grits.
Sunday we arrived at church and realized there was no Sunday School, so we went into the service. Noticed the steps in the gym only have the high-visibility tape on every other step - a cruel joke.
Later M drove down to W&MC’s to smoke meat. They didn’t eat until after 9:30. M didn’t get home until after we’d gone to bed. He stayed up tending to the brisket for the party.
Sunday afternoon I cleaned out Matthew’s Corolla, and took it for gas and air in the tires. Also went for an emissions test. Was out in the sun and on my feet more than I would’ve liked.
Sunday evening we went over to a friend’s house for a meal and fireworks. Shawn has a beautiful home in East Cobb’s Indian Hills subdivision. They’d invited our little group of friends (Earharts Halls Murphys Chos) as well as their Sunday School class. Plus his mother had invited friends. Their son had invited friends as well, so there was a crowd. They brought in Willy’s Mexican for supper. Instead of a taco I piled everything into a “salad” – lettuce, chips, rice, black beans, ground beef, chicken, cheese. Very good.
Shawn’s back deck overlooks the first fairway of the golf course (I think). To the right is the clubhouse. To the left is where people gather on the fairway for the fireworks. We’d seen them there before. Not 100 yards from the house is where the fireworks are set off, starting at 9:30 pm. That’s when I went home, since I had an early wakeup Monday morning.
Over here the holiday was super busy for C, cooking all day long. I took a nap. At six we loaded all the food into the cars and drove to Joel Norman’s for W’s surprise party. Joel and wife, just Charles Norman. Our entire fam including Caleb. Thomas & Holly. Will’s friend Kevin Brock was in town with his girlfriend. Also 4 or 5 couples from Will’s church. I had a long sneaker conversation with one of the guys.
The food was extra good, especially Matthew’s brisket. C cooked shredded chicken, refried beans, and Mexican rice, plus other fixins. Anna brought a sangria she’s made. After the surprise and supper, Ceil and I loaded Shivonne in the W&MC’s new little sports car and carefully drove to their house. I didn’t want to get on the freeway and didn’t want to drive too bumpy of a route since their car sits too low to the ground. Card were honking because I was driving so slow. We got Shivonne to bed and turned on the TV. I took a nap. One the way home we passed by Truist Park, still all lit up. It was after 11:30 and I thought we might see some fireworks. Turned out the game was still going on. The Braves are 24-6 in their last 30 games.
Working from home today. Later I will drive to Augusta to take physical inventory early tomorrow morning. Dinner out somewhere nice tonight. I would play golf, but it looks like early afternoon thunderstorms. Later this week I have to put the car in the shop to get new brakes.
GUY HECKER [SABR Bio] a 19th-century pitcher, first baseman and outfielder still holds the major league record for most runs scored in one game. Hecker scored seven runs for the Louisville Colonels vs. the Baltimore Orioles in the American Association on 15-Aug-1886(2), a record for professional baseball which still stands. He is also the only pitcher to score as many as six runs in a game. The same day Hecker had six hits, the most ever for a pitcher. He was the starting pitcher in that game and hit three of his season’s total of four home runs that same day. He had 19 career HR and never again hit even as many as two in a single game again. His record as a manager in the National League may go a long way to explaining why he has never received serious Hall of Fame consideration. He “guided” the Louisville Alleghenys to a 23-113 record.
