Joan of Arc

The Way We Were was a good movie, when I watched it years ago. I probably need to watch it again. A great Joan of Arc movie was the 2001 remake starring young Leelee Sobienski as Joan. Young Neil Patrick Harris plays the boy king. I probably need to find a good Joan of Arc book to read.

You would probably like the book I am reading: Outlander, about a married nurse who accidentally travels back in time from 1945 to the late 1700’s. She has to re-marry for her own protection, and falls in love with her young warrior husband. Her knowledge of history comes in handy. Later she is tried as a witch. The book, the first of a series of novels, was turned into a long-running TV show that I’ve never seen.

I’m not as crazy about the All Star Game as I was years ago. I know so few of the players there days, and everyone plays an inning or two then gets replaced. d’Arnauld probably won’t play since he’s the backup catcher. Swanson and Contreras will probably only get one at bat. Even Acuna probably won’t play much. We’ll see if Acuna can advance more than one round in the home run derby this year. Since Ceil will be gone that night I will probably watch the beginning of the game. People are saying Kershaw needs to start instead of Freid to draw more viewers. Same with the Angels Ohtani. Pretty bad that its not a game for the deserving, but for the stars of the big market teams. Beatwriter Mark Bowman agrees.

After work yesterday I had to meet a guy over near 75, but got the street name wrong and drove further than I’d wanted. Left home at 445 and didn’t get home until like 630, after stopping by Trader Joes. Ceil cooked spaghetti, and M ate with us.

Watched the season finale of Holey Moley. An unlikely 63 year-old woman made like four straight holes in one to win the $250,000 grand prize. At the end she announced she was jumping to the LIV.  

Shivonne stood up on her own for the first time on Tuesday. She wanted to play in the dirt of a potted plant.

Just learned that Will tested positive for covid. Anna is feeling better, and was able to work from home yesterday. Her roommate is staying away, but brought her takeout for Taqueria last night.

One the way home from Waffle House yesterday I lost a hubcap on 75 north. Saw it pop up past my window. Then on my late afternoon drive I lost a second hubcap.

GEORGE BRETT  [SABR Bio] was the MVP of the first postseason series the Toronto Blue Jays ever played, the 1985 ALCS . Bobby Cox got Toronto to the postseason, but Brett’s 1.022 OPS was too much to overcome. Brett is second all-time in career batting average for the Royals, the only team he played for. Jose Offerman’s .306 edges out Brett’s .305 as listed in Baseball-reference.com. The second time he hit a walk-off home run, he had already hit for the cycle in the same game. On 05-May-1979, Brett doubled in the 14th inning to complete his cycle, then homered in the 16th to end the game.

DENISON: ways to trust God when it’s hard to. When we plead with him for help with our suffering but he seemingly refuses to do what we ask, our confidence in his love and power can be shaken. Here are three biblical explanations for such a response from God:
1. God sometimes uses suffering to judge sin. However this is not the only explanation for suffering. Remember the innocent sufferings of Joseph, Job, and Jesus, the deaths of the babies in Bethlehem (Matthew 2), and the martyrdoms of Christians across the New Testament. We should never assume that a person’s suffering is divine judgment. But when we face suffering ourselves, it is good to ask the Lord if sin is relevant to our condition.
2. God uses suffering to show us our need of Himself. Paul learned to say, "When I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Cor 12:8-10).
3. God uses suffering to grow us in holiness.
