Social Event of the Season

Notes from the Margaret H / Matthew F wedding:

When the minister asked "who gives this lady to be married", David replied "Her mother and I-live" - referring to Olive, bride Margaret's beloved adopted special-needs Golden Retriever.

When the father of the groom mentioned potential grandchildren in his speech during the reception, David impersonated evangelist Ernest Angley with his "Amen!". Hurt then added another joke only homeschoolers would get: "Make room for Jesus!" Margaret buried her face in her hands in embarrassment.

During David's speech he expressed his excitement in having groom Matthew in the family, "since he's so good at fixing things." Then David misspoke, calling Matthew "Mark" - but quickly recovered, saying "No Mark was three boyfriends ago. We like Matthew much more".

Matthew's younger brother was best man, and delivered a humorous but heartfelt speech beyond his years - mentioning the time Matthew and his dad flew cross country to Oregon buy buy an old BWM that didn't run. They fixed it, and drove it back to Georgia.

Maid of honor Emily Hanson, who we knew as Anna's classmate at Living Science, also gave a nice speech. Emily admitted this was the first thing she'd written that Margaret hadn't corrected the grammar. Emily also said she and Margaret used to just hang out together, each stairing at their phones not talking to each other. Emily's sister Elizabeth was there as well, and we had a nice chat.

At our table: Ashley and Diane Corbett, the Toholsky's, Becky Norman, and Mary Goldsmith. At the wedding we sat next to Trena and Robert Hargreaves, Andrew's aunt and uncle. Also Jim Ewing Sr. Willis Norman was the wedding photographer. Jere G Jr was back at the GT game. Dinner was prime rib, macaroni & cheese, green beans, salad, and a chicken dish. Very good.

Since they are such Disney enthusiasts, David and bride Margaret danced to "When You Wish Upon a Star". Toward the end of the reception Margaret's big puppy Olive made an appearance, happily hobbling around, following Margaret.

After the wedding we drove 30 minutes through the mountains to a hotel in Clayton Ga. Made it in time to watch the second half of Clemson@BC. Having been up before dawn to play golf, I fell asleep before the end of the game.

Sunday we left Clayton at 8 am and drove up to Spruce Pine NC for their annual artist's market. Ceil got to visit a good while with her favorite, Stanley Anderson. Most of the restaurants in town were closed, so we ate a late lunch in Asheville at Tupelo Honey.

I had the fried chicken and grits, with gravy and eggs (below). Got Ceil a Summitt Coffee, and made it home before 8 pm. Averaged 31.5 mpg on our trip.

I always wanted to go to the Dillard House. We passed by there both Saturday and Sunday, but not at meal times.

Small group last night with teacher John, my friend Rob, and new addition Robert. Studying I Thessalonians. Lifted weights at the gym this AM.

JOHNNY MIZE [SABR Bio] was the first player with a fifty home run season for a NL team based in New York. Mize hit 51 HR in 1947 for NYG. He was the first NL position player to be runner-up in the MVP balloting in consecutive seasons, in 1939 & 1940. Pitcher Dizzy Dean (1935, 1936) was the first NLer to finish MVP runner-up in back-to-back seasons. Denison: Dr. Albert Mohler is right: "Your church may cost you your job, but your job may demand your soul."

Me: I am hearing more and more reports like this, of Christians being persecuted for their faith.
