Winners & Losers

I was watching coverage of the Augusta National Women's Amateur. See any of that? Winner Rose Zhang is a highly decorated Stanford sophomore who's won just about everything possible as an amateur. In her speech she thanked her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On her Instagram she had posted a video of her baptism.

On the second playoff hole UGA's Jenny Bae hit into the woods, then into a bunker. After Zhang lagged her birdie attempt within inches, Bae conceded, pulling out the flagstick so Zhang could tap in – quite the sporting gesture, especially after an ill-timed gust of wind foiled Bae's chance at a winning shot on the last hole.

She was beaten. Then she delivered one of Augusta National's coolest gestures (msn.com)

Also a wonderful story about the recipient of the Augusta National's Lee Elder Scholarship at nearby Paine College, who got to play the final round of the Women's Am as the marker since there was an odd number of golfers who had made the cut. Her grandparents drove 9 hours from Ohio to watch.

LSU/Iowa: a After the semifinal the entire nation is ready to tune into the women's championship game. Then the most famous coach in the women's game goes on a rant because sportswriters describe her team with typical sportswriter's cliches.

LSU was clearly bigger and better than Iowa, more talented and athletic. Hawkeyes tried to move the ball around and get the ball inside, but their smaller players were getting beat up. Most of the calls seemed to go LSU's way. Iowa only had the one little player. Clark kept them in the game. Hawkeye coach could've done a better job at pulling the strings. Only chance was for Tigers to foul out, and Iowa make all their foul shots. But it was Iowa who fouled out. That may be the LSU head coach's regular outfit, but a little too flashy for me.

Interesting that even for these female college athletes, both Zhang and Clark are already corporate spokespeople with lucrative NIL deals. Zhang is featured in slick adidas ads. Clark in a Buick ad that aired during the tourney. Caitlin also signed with Nike, and appeared to be wearing a different colored sneakers in every game.

Speaking of the Masters, Golf Digest ranked all the golfers playing this week. They have Tiger at 20.

Friday: left work not long after 5 pm. Got home and cut the grass. Ever since my throat and lungs have been coated with pollen (but not my nose), so I have been coughing.

Saturday morning rain and thunder, so I slept in. No golf. Cleaned upstairs until after 10 am. Downstairs to start laundry for the first time in several weeks.

Picked up Rob and my other friend Reid for lunch at Jim & Nicks BBQ. Shawn and Preston and Lee couldn't make it. Rob knew about the loaded baked potato, so that's what I ordered: a huge baked potato with cheese, sour cream, BBQ, and sauce. Very good. We ate out on the patio.

Later I went to the Braves open house. It wasn't packed with people, but it was kind of a flop. The ticket vouchers didn't work. I tried on the new Nike jerseys in the team store. They had the Braves game on the jumbotron. Acuna and Olson led off the game with back to back home runs. I didn't stay too long. My view (above) for my early dinner (burger).

That night C turned on the Hallmark Channel movie "Love in the Maldives". Big budget for the Hallmark Channel. Must've been subsidized by the Maldives Tourism Board. During the movie I was following the Final Four on my phone, and watched the second half of the second game.

DENISON: if you wanted to subvert American democracy, the best way to do it would be to cause the people to lose faith in their elections and their elected officials. Is this what is happening before our eyes?
