Wednesday was the anniversary of Larry Doby breaking the American League color barrier. Cleveland manager Terry Francona petitioned MLB to let his team all wear Doby’s number 14, but the request was denied. The minor league team where Doby played high school ball did honor Doby by wearing his number.
Would be nice if the Braves could all wear 44 to honor Hank Aaron, and/or let each team honor their own first black player, like the Braves' Sam Jethroe.
Each September the Pirates all wear 21 to honor Roberto Clemente. Each June MLB sets aside a day to honor Lou Gehrig, in conjunction with ALS research. Players wear patches and special socks, along with their regular uniform number.

Tom Hanks is making a sequel to BIG, where as an older man wishes he was a kid again.
1. Tee shot sliced right. Flubbed 3 approach shots. Hit one chip too far and another not so bad. “Triple”.
2. Hit two 7 irons off the tee. Both left. Found both in the high rough. Several poor chips out of the high grass. My playing partner never give’s himself more than a triple.
3. Hit one tee shot right, one left. Several poor chips. Give me another triple.
4. Hit a good 7 iron right toward the hole. Faded left and rolled down the hill into the rough. Two great chips. Par.
5. Pulled a 6 iron left into a tree. Mulligan good but right. Third try was better. Three chips, the first two better than the third. Two putt. “Bogey”.
6. Hit hybrid off the tee. First swing was a rocket, low and slightly right, right at the big oak. I wouldn’t find it. Mulligan was pretty good, in the fairway to the left of the tree. Then I hit a great 6 iron to the fringe, inches from the green. Two putts for a nice “par”.
7. Hit a good drive but didn’t find it. Mulligan sliced short, into the line of trees. But I hit a great 5 iron out under the branches, that crested the hill into the middle of the fairway. Than a good 6 iron to the back fringe. Two putt for “bogey “.
8. Hit an okay drive that didn’t get a good roll due to the high grass. Flubbed my second shot, then punched a wedge shot onto the green. Great lag putt. Bogey.
9. Hit a great 3 wood, just short of the green. Two cruddy chips, then a two putt for “bogey”. Finished at 7:32. Four over the for the last 6 holes - easily a record. Played again on Thursday morning - poorly.
Then Taco Bell, Goodwill, and the congress center to pick up my Peachtree number. Will and Shivonne road tripped to Chattanooga to hike with old friends - and stop at Buccees.
Friday: up early this AM to lift weights.
MICKEY MANTLE [SABR Bio] hit 54 home runs in 1961, the most ever to not lead the league (Roger Maris hit 61). Griffey hit 56 in the AL in 1997, but Mark McGwire led the majors that year with 58—34 with Oakland and 24 with St. Louis. Mantle, Jim Thome, and Stan Musial are tied with 13 walk-off career dingers, the most in history. One of Mantle’s was in the postseason (3-Oct-1964). One of Musial’s in an All-Star Game (12-July-1955). All thirteen of Thome’s were hit in regular-season games. Mantle was timed running to first base, and timed completing a run around the bases. His times were the best available. Mantle also took home a Gold Glove award one year.
