Children of the Corn

Long busy day. Lots better than yesterday.

Man last night I worked past 7 pm. Had Dreamland BBQ for lunch so I wasn’t hungry for sup. Couldn’t sleep well due to stress. Neither could coworker Angie, so I had tried to encourage earlier in the evening.

Decided to get to the gym early. Was downstairs well before 6 am. Bent over to tie my shoes and my back went out. Put on my office clothes and went to work instead. Arrived at 630 am.

Had to mess with my computer for like an hour to get going. Asked for help, and got it. Should be keeping new monitors and a new laptop at some point. Got two screens going so that is an improvement. Busy day but I got a little done.

Willys for lunch – I piled everything on top of each other, kind of a Mexican salad. Got a few more things to do. Two coworkers and two trainers still here.

SANDY KOUFAX [SABR Biowas the first to rack up fifteen strikeouts in each of nine games.  Koufax struck out at least 15 in a G 8 X in the regular season &, historically, once in a WS G. With 29 such games, Randy Johnson is now the all-time leader. No one else has as many consecutive National League ERA titles as he has. His season ERA was the best in the NL in each of his last 5 seasons, three of those years also leading the majors: 1962-66 (2.54, 1.88, 1.74, 2.04, 1.73). No AL pitcher has ever strung together five consecutive ERA crowns. Koufax played basketball for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats…and baseball.

Bad News

I tried to have as restful Sunday as possible. Watched Saints@Falcons and Jags@Texans, then Bills@Eagles then a Hallmark movie and Peyton's Places. Went to bed early but had a hard time sleeping. Apprehensive about work.

Friday night I have an evil dream, about a young lady getting kidnapped, with evil people doing terrible things to her. Demonic. I woke up and prayed that such thoughts be cast out of my head.

Monday: up early to run at the gym this morning. Looks like it will be a chilly week weather wise. I have no plans that I know of, except work.

Man I am having a tough week. Worked well past 6 pm last night. Traffic wasn't bad on the way home. Ate leftover chili for supper. But not as tough as some people. You think you got it rough, when so many have it so much worse off than you can imagine.

Spoke to an old college friend on the way home. Learned our friend Mary from the Tech BSU just learned she has cancer, bad. Mary was like a big sister to me. Never married. Retired a few years ago from engineering, and went to work for the Southern Baptist Emergency Response team, who travels to hard hit disaster areas, like after hurricanes hit. She lives in Athens and was active in her church, where it sounds like she has plenty of support. Sad news.

Last night C has at her women's ministry, which she says is getting rough. Tonight she has small group.

Up early again to run at the gym. The SAP trainers scheduled me for an 8 am meeting this morning. We were working on a big problem when someone from another department barged in and took up the trainer's time for 30 minutes, getting help to enter orders to be pushed in ahead of my orders. Left me just sitting there with nothing to do. Extremely rude. Then she started talking about the weather. I said "Are you finished yet?"

I'm just falling further and further behind. Coworker evidently is working from home this week. Things that used to take 5 minutes now take hours. Something that happened in a day now takes over a week. Ugh.

Since covid the United Nations has been working not to promote peace, but more as a one world governing body seeking to dictate policy to sovereign nations – like saying the West needs to eat less meat.

BABE RUTH [SABR Bio] is the only player who pitched more than a thousand major league innings with a lifetime batting average over .300. Career IP = 1,221⅓. BA = .342. Ruth visited Japan in a 1934 exhibition tournament. His career guaranteed his warm greeting in baseball-mad Japan. In six separate seasons, his annual salary with NYY was $52,000 -  which he liked because it meant that he was making $1,000 a week all year.

My Championship Picks

My three top picks for the weekend…

Michigan  -  Iowa  23 – Michigan will win by less than 23.

Georgia - Alabama  5 – Bama wins (I hope I am wrong – hopefully by picking Bama, I will put the jinx on them !).

Texas - Oklahoma State  14 – OK State wore themselves out beating BYU this past Saturday night. They won’t have enough left in the tank this week. Longhorns win by more than 14.

Other picks…

Liberty - New Mexico State 10-1/2 Liberty wins by less than 10-1/2

Oregon - Washington  9-1/2 - Oregon wins by less than 9-1/2

Tulane  -  SMU  4 – Tulane wins by more than 4.

FSU  -  Louisville  3 – Louisville pulls off the upset.

Been a rough 24 hours. Left work Monday after 6 pm. Bad traffic on the way home. Accident at an intersection on Holcomb Bridge east of 400 blocking 2 lanes. Was after 715 when I got home. Still I beat C home, so Winnie was crazy. Took her outside and she took her time. Then as we were going back inside C arrived, so Winnie wanted to wait on her.

Went inside and warmed up leftovers for supper. Then I took out the trash and changed clothes. Ate apple pie and ice cream. Didn’t plop on the couch until almost 9 pm, so I was later going to bed.

Up early this morning to lift weights at the gym. Got to work at 750. Takes ten minutes to get logged on. Then in a meeting from 800 til noon. Lunch was salad and chicken tetrazini from Jason’s Deli. Then an hour long meeting from 3 till 4 pm, so I fell behind today. Got an 8 am meeting tomorrow. Figure I better use the trainers while they are here.

Guess y’all heard that Robin Brady passed away. Funeral was this past Sunday at 11 am. Learned more bad news today that I may share later.

Growing In Gratitude

Stephen Bonham
JFBC teaching pastor
Growing in Gratitude
Colossians 3:15-17

The church is called to be thankful.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18 rejoice always pray without ceasing in everything give thanks

Two things happen: (1) we get a better picture of who Jesus is, and (2) who we are apart from Christ.

If we are growing in Christ, we should be growing in gratitude.

Four enemies of gratitude
1. Comparison. It used to be hard to see someone else's pictures, something we really didn't want to do. Now they're pretty much forced down our throat. They're hard to avoid. Hurts when you're struggling with infertility, etc. Robs us of joy.
2. Having a critical spirit. Commenting on bad service, food, etc. Having unrealistic expectations.
3. Unmet expectations. Not being able to do the things you had hoped to do.
4. Dissatisfaction with the world. Trying to fill our heart with things other than Jesus. Matthew Perry prayed that he wanted to be famous. He became famous, but was still empty.

The church can be a light, by counterculturally being thankful in all things. What does "in all things" mean? Not "for all things". Uplifting to see families share thankfulness in the midst of sickness and trials.

Col 3:15-17
V 15 let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts - thankfulness is rooted in Christ. Stephen watched Jurassic Park, and had nightmares. Every 15 minutes he went to the restroom. He needed peace. In Jesus we have permanent peace. Helps keep us in bounds like an umpire / instructor.Leads to thanksgiving.
Rom 8:38-39

V 16 gratitude is cultivated in the Word, and in worship. A direct correlation. We need the reminder to gather for corporate worship. We sing and speak truths over each other, and take a moment to forget about our own troubles. JL Packer's book: Knowing God.

V 17: Do everything in the name of Jesus, both the big things and the small. Luke 17 the story of Jesus and the ten lepers. Jesus heals them. Nine rushed to the temple to resume their lives. Only one stayed to thank Jesus.

Basics to add to your routine to cultivate thankfulness…
1. Have a gratitude journal. Share with others what you've thankful for.
2. Serve others regularly
3. Take a break from social media
4. Write a weekly note of thankfulness, or word of encouragement to those around you.
5. Re-order your prayers, to ACTS

In a world that says more more more, we have all we need in God and Jesus.

Rivalry Saturday

Bama is good, but got lucky. Auburn played their game of the year. The War Eagles beat themselves. They had Bama backed up, 4th & goal from the 35 yard line. Bama had to score on that play. Auburn did a good job keeping Milroe in the pocket - but he stood back there for a full 7 seconds - an eternity for a secondary to have to cover receivers. Touchdown.

We were over at our friend's house, about to eat supper (Jim & Nicks BBQ, collards, macaroni & cheese, baked beans, and salad). Knowing Auburn led, I asked that the TV be flipped over to CBS. Didn't realize the two Georgia Southern grads had been watching their Eagles lose to App State.

When Bama scored, I let out a shriek. Unbelievable.

Then Auburn didn't down the kickoff in the end zone, instead burning seconds running the ball out - and only getting out to the 15 - and then getting into a fight. Granted at that point it was the Bama defenders who needed to be careful not to be kicked out of the first half of next week's SEC championship game.

Better for UGA that Bama won this week. Would be tough enough Bama win next week for the Dawgs. Milroe gonna be hard to contain.

Next week Bama vs UGA should be a good game. Of course we'll be at a work dinner, at Frankie's Steakhouse way over near the Gwinnett Arena.

To say Bama got lucky is a misnomer. Good teams find their luck, bad teams dig their own graves. Going into that 4th down play. Auburn had a 99.9% chance of winning.

Similar to UGA@GT. Jackets played their best game all year. They came to play. After facing Florida, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, it was hard for all those 18-20 year old Dawgs to get up to play 6-5 Tech, a team Georgia had beaten over ten straight times in Atlanta.

As usual the Dawgs fell behind early. Tech fans were thinking they were going to win. UGA defense giving up a lot of yards on the ground. Receivers Bowers and McConkey and Rosemy-Jacksaint were all held out of the game.

Dawgs allowed two critical turners, one an interception in the end zone. Also several penalties that called back a few big gainers.

FSU down 12-0 early, but came back to lead 17-15 and win what, 24-15? Louisville lost to Kentucky.

Herbstreit predicted that LSU QB Jayden Daniels will win the Heisman. I tend to agree.

Oklahoma State edged BYU, and advanced to the conference championship game. My friend Jim had tickets to the game, but instead traveled back to Atlanta.

Undefeated Washington held on to beat Washington State 24-21 on a las second field goal. Would've been nice if they could've lost.

Clemson finally got to break out their orange "championship" pants, to wear in the "state championship" game against SC. The pants must've worked.

Fox college football pregame has 6 guys stuffed behind the desk: the host, Matt Leinert, Brady Quinn, Charles Woodson, Mark Ingram, and Urban Meyer. Plus three announcers I've never heard of, calling this week's "game of the year". Fox does have Tom Renaldi on one of the sidelines. Not sure why Renaldi ever left ESPN college gameday. More money and less work?

Michigan in all black, or navy, or whatever color it is. Not much maize. Michigan beat Ohio State. The Wolverines will be a formidable playoff opponent. Will the Buckeyes still make the playoff? They don't get my vote. Poor Ryan Day. The pressure of coaching at Ohio State. Not sure why Texas A&M would want him if he can't win the big one.

Early Saturday AM golf. I've hit a lot of shots this week. I've improved my chipping. Couldn't be worse. Decent putting as well. I can putt when I concentrate. Still have room for improvement. But man on the tee and in the fairway it feels like I've never hit a golf ball before. Need to practice - you think?

After golf I drove to the office. Worked two hours. Knocked out a pile of work. Got an early start decorating the Christmas tree in the lobby (with flair from my coworker Angie's desk).

Bought a nice grey Gwinnett Stripers quarter zip on eBay for a good price. Size large, so it won't hang off me. Then I thought - I don't already have one, do I? (no). I do need to clean out my closet.

After church today C wanted me to drive her to Costco. I grabbed their foot long hot dog & soft drink deal. She was watching Jaguars @ Texans on her phone. Jags just scored a TD pass from Trevor to Ridley on a square in pattern, then converted the 2-point conversion using the exact same play. 21-14 Jacksonville. Jags woud hold on to win, as did the Falcons. Good looking game, with the Saints wearing throwback-type unis as well.

Million dollar idea: pie with crust not only on the bottom and top, but also in the middle…between two layers of filling.

R.I.P. Levi Walker

Levi Walker just passed away. For years he was Chief Noc-a-Homa of the Braves.
Levi welcomed Rick Camp at the plate after Camp's incredible home run, hit early in the morning on July 5th.
Noc-a-Homa's tepee was famously removed from it's perch in the left feild bleachers to make room for more ticket sales for the first place Braves in the early 1980's. The Braves promptly went on a weeks-long losing streak. After an outcry from fans, the tepee was restored, and the Braves won the division championship.
I suppose there's no way the Braves can wear a memorial patch next year in tribute for Walker. Will be interesting to see if a memorial brick will be added outside Truist Park, alongside other deceased players, coaches, and front office personnel.
Truly the end of an era.

On Twitter someone mistakenly posted a picture of my friend Robert (aka The Chief), who for years has worn the Indian outfit that his mother made him, to as many as 81 home games a year. Robert works at the nearby Stinky Kroger.

My own tweet celebrating Walker garnered much more attention than I usually get.

Angel Reese was not suspended for academic probation, but instead for team disciplinary reasons, says her head coach. Angel may be one of the most talented and productive players in the nation, but that doesn’t mean she is above the rules. Should athletes be looked upon as heroes? Certainly not. Do athletes serve as examples for America’s youth? Like it or not, they are – especially when they take to social media and garner 2.6 million followers. Resse is a great player. Lovely smile. Beautiful – she'll be in the upcoming Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue – flashing her ring finger like she did in Caitlin Clark’s face. Guess you can say that I am not a fan.

Thanksgiving

Thursday: still recovering from clipping hedges for 2 hours on Wednesday. C was back in the kitchen cooking. Turkey dressing sweet potato casserole apple pie, cranberry something, Brussels sprouts, homemade rolls, and no telling what else. M made macaroni & cheese, and carved Ceil's turkey. I spent the day cleaning up after C, doing dishes laundry more yard work folding clothes etc and of course football.

The help desk at work updated my laptop so I can work from home. But now I can't check my personal email accounts or enter sweepstakes at night. Ugh. Help desk guy did say that I should be able to get a new laptop early next year, so there's that. Right now my old laptop takes like ten minutes to boot up.

Anna brought Goose to spend the day with Winnie. A&C went to north Georgia to eat with Caleb's extended family.

Chicago, Keenan Thompson, and Cher on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Cher wasn't wearing her muff like she did back in the 70's while singing O Holy Night – a tale annually re-told and reenacted by Paul Schaffer.

Cher wasn't the only 77 year old performing this Thanksgiving.

JEFF FRANCOEUR [B-R Bio] hit into the only National League game-ending unassisted triple play in the Modern Era.  On 23-Aug-2009, playing for the Mets, Francoeur lined out to Phillies second-baseman Eric Bruntlett, who then stepped on 2nd base, getting the runner who'd left too early, and tagged out the runner coming from first. Watch the whole thing here. He was inducted with the first-ever class of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame. GA HS FHOF in 2022. He is the lead television analyst for the team he played for the most (the Braves), for whom he played 2005-09. In his 12 seasons in the majors, he played for eight teams and played and either with or for eight Hall of Famers, thirteen MVPs and seven Cy Young Award winners. Check here for complete list.

Saturday's Picks

Not sure how much research you do before making picks. Sometimes I come across Lang's weekly picks, and lately I've been paying more attention. I usually just go off the top of my head. My top three picks…

MICHIGAN-Ohio State   4 – Buckeyes win by 5 or more.

Alabama-AUBURN   14-1/2 - Bama wins by 15 or more.

Missouri-ARKANSAS   7-1/2 - Mizzou wins by 8 or more.

Other picks…

Georgia-GA TECH   23 – Dawgs win by 24 or more.

FSU-FLORIDA   6 – Noles win by 7 or more.

Mississippi-MISS. ST.   12 – Ole Miss wins by less than 12.

LOUISVILLE-Kentucky   7 – Cards win by 8 or more.

LSU-Texas A & M   10-1/2 - LSU wins by 11 or more.

Clemson-SOUTH CAROLINA   7 – Gamecocks win by 8 or more.

NC STATE-North Carolina   2 – UNC wins by 3 or more.

Hope you loyal readers have a happy Thanksgiving. Making a mental note to save room for dessert, though we'll surely be taking any leftover apple pie home with us tonight. So I'll eat my fill of turkey, dressing, sweet potato casserole, Matthew's macaroni & cheese. Probably some green bean casserole, though it looks like it could be good or bad. Goose and Winnie will hold down the fort in East Cobb.

MEL OTT  [SABR Bio] set the record for most home run titles by a National Leaguer. Ralph Kiner broke Ott's record with his 7th straight NL HR title in 1952. Mike Schmidt is the current NL record holder as he bested Kiner's record with his 8th HR crown in 1986. Ott is the only player to hit more than 300 home runs in a single ball park. Ott finished with 323 HR in his home park, The Polo Grounds in New York. He was once intentionally walked with the bases loaded, on 05-Oct-1929.  Full story here.  It was one of just 8 times on record that an MLB hitter had been walked intentionally with the bases loaded: Abner Dalrymple in 1881, Nap Lajoie in 1901, Del Bissonette in 1928, Bill Nicholson in 1944, Barry Bonds in 1998, Josh Hamilton in 2008, and Corey Seager in 2022.

Since when did the Globetrotters start wearing black uniforms?

Wednesday

Tough Tuesday for me. Should've been slow so I could get some work done, but instead it was crazy. Filling in for others who took off. Customer doubled down trying to overcome their own screwup, creating more work for us. Worked past 6 pm.

After such a bummer of a day I decided to take off today. Then I got home and realized I'd left my laptop at work.

This morning I teed off at sunrise. Thought about playing 18 holes instead of my usual nine, but I had too much to do. Drove to work to get my laptop. Stopped by Wendy's for an egg & cheese biscuit. Stopped by two thrift stores on the way home.

Took Ceil to get her car from the shop. Minor things. Got my hair cut. Stopped by McDonalds for their dollar large fries deal. Gassed up Ceil's car.

Spent the rest of the afternoon trimming hedges. Piles and piles of cut branches. Didn't quite finish before dark.

Ceil has been cooking all day, when she hasn't been running to the grocery store.

John Gilliam played for the Saints, Vikings, Cardinals, and Falcons. He often wore his white socks inside outwards. Later he owned a shoe store in the Omni International, when I worked at the nearby Chickfila.

Kinda like we were talking about last week, now that I finally have a car with lots of fancy gizmos, I can’t look at them because I have to pay close attention to the road. Plus it’s hard to read them, even with my glasses. I think my phone will connect to my car and show the map on the display, but I probably need to turn on the Bluetooth on my phone.

Worked until 530 on Monday. Stopped by Dollar Tree. Chili for supper. Watched Eagles@Chiefs. Peyton and Eli had Caitlin Clark as a guest. Also Mike Vick and Mark Walhburg.

Tuesday: AM weights at the gym. Worked til six. C ate out with friends. Plenty of leftovers at home. Watched the playoff rankings show on ESPN, and Jeopardy. Winnie was still worn out from the weekend.

Home run champions who later managed in the majors (Modern Era).
