Recruiting and NIL

The Under Armour High School All American football game is this weekend, featuring many of the top recruits from across the country. For media day the players answered questions anonymously about recruiting, and the amount of NIL money they’d been offered. Only one player admitted the signed with the school that offered him the most money. Several said the money offered from various schools was about the same. Players were receiving NIL deals ranging from $70,000 to $300,000 or even $400,000. Some were offered signing bonuses (free cars), or around $40,000 per month immediately to sign early if they would help recruit other top players to the school. No wonder so many players are transferring these days. Other players said they were signing with their dream school without consideration of the NIL money, or with the school where they can play immediately, or the school that will best help them get to the NFL. Interesting reading.

Today a five star DB who had spent his freshman year at UGA suddenly decided to not enter the transfer portal after all. Wonder what changed his mind?

Last night Iowa’s Kaitlin Clark scored 40 points and hit the buzzer beater to win the game. Experts are saying she will be the number one overall pick in the next WNBA draft.

You have to read Charles Martin’s series of books (1) The Water Keeper, (2) The Letter Keeper, and (3) The Record Keeper. VERY good. The main character goes by several names, two of which are David and Murphy. You will cry. Guess I need to read his other books The Mountain Between Us, Chasing Fireflies, When Crickets Fly, and Long Way Home.

Not much from me. Worked until 6 pm. Spaghetti for supper. Watched Jeopardy, the Bears episode of Peytons Places, and a Hallmark movie while playing on my laptop.

Started Tuesday with 42 emails. Worked it down to nine.

Old Atlanta Stadium was called the Launching Pad because of the way the ball carried in that park. Helped Hank Aaron break Babe Ruth’s record. Many said the park’s elevation had something to do with it – Atlanta is 1050 feet above sea level. When the Braves moved across the street to Turner Field the elevation was slightly lower. Not sure, but it seems like the elevation of Truist Park is higher than Atlanta Stadium.

Before the Rockies joined the league, only Pittsburgh had a higher elevation than Atlanta. So many baseball cities are on the coastlines: NYC, SF, LA, SD, TB, Miami, Boston, Washington – near sea level, like Philadelphia.
