Braves Promote Weiss as Manager

Walt Weiss was named the new Braves manager. What do you think? As usual, people are going to complain no matter what the Braves do. Last night Barrett Sallee was roasting the anonymous complainers on Twitter. Thought he was going to start naming them on the air. Weiss’ tenue as manager for the lowly Rockies has nothing to do with what will happen with the Braves. While I’d kinda wished the Braves had hired David Ross, I’m sure GM AA and the rest of the Braves organization are a little bit more knowledgeable about the situation than me, or any of the so-called know-it-alls on social media. Just watch all the pitchers and hitters stay healthy next year, and the Braves run away with the division championship.

One good thing about Walt Weiss: he can spot talent. A few years ago during a Braves Play Day, Weiss and Jessie Biddle was greeting fans in line to hit in the batting cage. Will took his turn in the cage, slashing one line drive after another. When Will finished, Walt Weiss asked Will “Where did you play?”

UNI WATCH: based on the look of the recently unveiled 2026 Sacramento Athletics jerseys, Nike has fixed the sleeves where teams like the Braves can have the sleeve stripes above the end of the sleeves.

QUESTION: who won the AL MVP in 1934?

After work yesterday I was going to swing by Wendys for my free tiny Halloween sized Frosty. There was only one minivan in the drive thru line. But man that minivan just sat there for several minutes. Was no one taking their order? Then I saw the minivan’s order on the big screen. It was long long long. Looked like every item had a special request – extra this, no that. Over $50.00. Finally they pulled around, so I ordered my little Frosty. Then the minivan driver was having a long conversation with the cashier. The long receipt was handed back and forth. Finally the minivan pulled forward to the pickup window. I knew it would take forever to fill their order. Would Wendys ask them to pull over? I talked to the friendly cashier. He said that the minivan had gotten to his window and ordered more! I asked, and he went around and grabbed my little Frosty and brought it to me. So nice! So instead of 20 minutes, I only had to wait for ten.

Two good guests on last night’s Manningcast: Charles Barkley and Baker Mayfield. Supper was meatloaf, mashed potatoes, kale, and black eyed peas. Three out of four ain’t bad.

Then last night at 9:30, I was plopped on the couch thinking about going to bed. Got a text from Matthew asking if his spare key was at our house (it was). He had locked his keys in his truck, so I had to drive the 30 minutes over to Smyrna with his spare key. He gave me a quick tour of his rental house. Then 30 minutes back home. At least traffic was light. Didn’t get to bed until 11 pm. Lifted weights at the gym this morning.

DENISON: 49% of Americans say our best times are behind us. Only 41% think they lie ahead. Politico:  this underscores “a sense of unease about individuals’ own futures and the national direction.” Only 42% of Americans believe the Democratic Party governs in an “honest and ethical way”. Most Americans expect political violence to keep growing in the US. Iranians are taught to hate America. It is distressing that so many Americans are taught the same, as explained in cultural commentator Andrew Sullivan’s latest blog.

PHIL NIEKRO [SABR Bio] holds the record for most wild pitches by a National League pitcher in the 20th century, with 200 from 1965-1987, likely all on knuckleballs. His brother Joe added 142 between 1967-1985. His career record was 318-278, more wins than Gaylord Perry, Tom Seaver or Randy Johnson, but on his 30th birthday, his win total was an unpromising 31 - the same number Denny McLain had that same year. Phil’s total when he turned 40 was only 197. Phil, his brother Joe, and Boston Celtics great John Havlicek were boyhood friends, growing across the street from each other in Lansing, Ohio. Havlicek is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Niekro is enshrined at Cooperstown.

ANSWER: Cochrane was player manager for the first place team, and his contributions as manager were considered.
