Ernie Nevers: MLB Pitcher

ERNIE NEVERS [B-R Bio] a BRTR hurler, was the only future Hall of Famer to surrender more than one of Babe Ruth’s sixty home runs in 1927. Ruth homered off Nevers 11-May- (8th) and 27-Aug-1927 (41st), both in Sportsman's Park III, St. Louis. Hall of Famers Lefty Grove (BLTL) and Ted Lyons (BBTR) supplied one each of the renowned sixty. Nevers did not surrender more than one home run to any other batter that season. His HR total surrendered in 1927 was nine. He started in the majors without any minor league experience, for the SLB in 1926. His great grand-nephew shortstop was drafted by the Astros in the 1st round of the 1990 MLB June Amateur Draft and played for Team USA. Tom Nevers – Drafted 21st overallwon a Gold for Team USA in 1989.

Thursday: worked from before 8 am well past 6 pm, then had to stop by Kroger on the way home.

Friday: left the house at 9 am. Matthew had driven up to ride with us. A good trip, except the traffic. Gave C and M a quick your of downtown. Lunch was Chickfila drive-thru. Met W&MC and Anna at the church, then Jeff Yearwood arrived. Jeff and MC practiced her song. Greeted people outside the church. About 50 or so attended. Good to see some folk I hadn’t seen in years and years. Some came to pay respects, then headed out. My mom had picked out the songs, and she sang along to all of them. A good service.

After the service my brother’s family was headed downtown to eat in a crowded restaurant, but the day had been long enough for me already. M and W hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before, and I knew the wait for a table would be long, and eating with a big party even longer. By the time we passed McDonough M was hungry so we stopped by Bojangles, then stopped by W&MC’s for brownies and ice cream out on their deck, around the firepit. A good time to unwind.

Saturday: I slept late, then cleaned upstairs. Ceil brought me a bowl of oatmeal. Then I drove to the office to do my taxes. Was there for over three hours. Still not sure I got them files correctly. Ceil cooked stir fry for supper. M ate with us. Later C went to a friend’s birthday party. I stayed home.

Sunday: on line Sunday School. Eggy boy sandwich. Laundry. Did some work outside. Nap. Watched The Players Championship. M did some work. Supper Ceil cooked Mexican: chicken, ground beef, refried beans, rice, cheese, homemade salsa, corn, chips. Lots of leftovers.

Life is not perfect. Some people don’t understand this. To expect perfection from others is unreasonable. When someone makes a mistake or does something you may not have liked, don’t take it personally. They most probably didn’t do it just to get at you.

Denison: Grace Church School, an Episcopal school in Manhattan, is teaching young students to not use the terms mom, dad, parents, boy, girl, and Christmas. Like Jesus said in the book of Matthew, now is the time to build our house on the rock, as opposed to the sand.
