Making Mischief

The Dawgs shut out Samford. Stetson threw for 300 yards, hitting 13 different receivers in the process, including tight end Darnell Washington (below).

Tech won 35-17 but gave up a bunch of yards. Might've been closer had Western Carolina hadn't turned it over so much.
Clemson allowed Furman to score four times but still won handily. The freshman QB didn't look as good. QB DJ U looked only okay but was only playing the Paladans. He still spends to much time deciding where to throw, and runs more than he should.

I might've helped create a fiasco at my company. While many of us down in the trenches are trying to get more work done than we can possibly handle, deluged with hundreds of emails every day, buying and shipping and making money selling metal – others up in the home office send out additional emails with various stories about our company. Most are of no interest. A few months ago the company home page started offering a bi-weekly poll, asking employees their favorite ice cream, etc. Fun stuff. But a couple of weeks ago the poll asked what was your favorite music: classical, jazz, rock, etc. I thought it interesting that country was not an option listed, a choice seemingly excluding an entire region of the country. I made an innocent comment asking why no country music, not being accusatory or vindictive or anything. My comment was deleted. A few others commented with the same question, but their comments remained. Later the poll was taken down, and all evidence of polls on the company webpage can no longer be seen. Can you say whitewash? Were they canned? Sacked?

When covid hit they pulled away almost half the chairs at tables in the break room at work, to allow for social distancing. I started adding some of the chairs back to the tables, since covid is all but over. We'll see if anyone notices.

"God makes nations great, and he destroys them; he enlarges nations, and leads them away" (Job 12:23).

"The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God" (Psalm 9:17).

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lᴏʀᴅ" (Psalm 33:12).

"If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it" (Jeremiah 18:7–10).

Alfred, Lord Tennyson prayed, "Our wills are ours, to make them thine."

I've added three more jerseys to my collection this month. Just what I need. Time to make a list.

Third baseman RED ROLFE  [SABR Bio] on one of the strongest teams ever, led the AL in doubles and led the majors in runs and hits but was a lackluster 27th in MVP voting that year. He placed tied for 24th the prior season. Five teammates finished ahead of him. In the 1939 AL MVP voting, Joe DiMaggio (the winner), Red Ruffing, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon & Charlie Keller all received more votes than Rolfe did that year, as did 20 others. Rolfe returned to his college alma matter and was the baseball coach for 14 years at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. The baseball field there bears his name.

Oriole third baseman JOHN McGRAW  [SABR Bio] led the NL in runs and walks two years straight. He had 143 & 140 runs and 112 & 124 walks in 1898 & 1899. He owns the all-time highest single-season batting average and highest single-season on-base percentage for a third baseman. He hit .391 in 1899. He learned to hit to the opposite field to avoid breaking windows at a church near right-center field. McGraw became an excellent contact hitter and would probably have received HOF votes even if he had never managed. McGraw managed NYG teams that lost the World Series in 1911, 1912, 1913, 1917, 1923 & 1924. No manager has lost more World Series than he has.

Mark my words: Strider and Harris will split the vote, allowing Brendan Donovan to win rookie of the year.
