Old Friends

Had a delightful time at the shower for Margaret Hurt. There was an open bar and catered supper: breaded chicken tenders with a sauce, shrimp and cheesy grits, breaded salmon, broccoli, salad, and a corn dish.

Matthew is the groom. Met Margaret in junior high at Living Science, so he knows my kids and the Normans. Graduated from Tech and co-opped at GM in Detroit. Loves cars, which gave him a connection to David.

Margaret works from home, where she also cares for her special needs dog.

David is doing well. He and Haley are headed to Boston for a Yankees / Red Sox game next week.

Mary hung out with the ladies, and retold the story of her heart attack, and ubering to the emergency room.

Haley Hurt works in Virginia Highland but lives with David & Mary in Cumming. When cousin Nina travels she often house-sits in Candler Park. A couple of these photos were stolen from her.

Bob Hurt is David’s older cousin. Lives in Washington DC, was a lobbyist / former AJC reporter. Worked for Sam Nunn. Has a place in St. Simons as well.

Ashley was talking about riding Amtrak to Charlotteville. Wife Diane was there as well.

Talaat isn’t yet fully retired. Doctor at Emory and Grady. Keeps up with the Huberts. He took a selfie with me, so I returned the favor.

Magy is a big sports fan. Pulls for LSU since their daughter went there. Went to the GT/Clemson game, used Jere Goldsmith’s tickets.

Becky Norman came with Ashely.

Jim Ewing looks good. Headed to Montana to go fly fishing with son George. Retired but keeps busy.

Jimmy Ewing and wife were there. Talked to Talaat for a long time.

George Ewing wasn’t there, but his company is doing well. Designs rail spurs for business expansions.

Bob Marsh wasn’t there, but we may see him Sunday at Jimmy Ewing’s daughter’s baptism.

Richard, David’s brother, still plays in a band. Tonight they’re playing at the High Card Brewery in downtown Tucker.

I mistook Matthew’s father for his brother. He helped his son build his Dawsonville house from the ground up, on four acres. They were also happy with the Living Science experience.

Nina was the hostess there at her house on Clifton Road in Candler Park, which is owned by her father Bob Hurt. Used to work for WABE radio.

Denison on Queen Elizabeth: the more power one exercises, the greater the temptation to use that power for one’s personal agendas. This makes Queen Elizabeth II’s humility and servant-heartedness all the more unique and illuminating. She prayed daily, every day of the week. She received religious instruction as a child from the Archbishop of Canterbury and possessed a spiritual depth that impressed many who met her.

Kevin McCarthy, minority leader of the House of Representatives, added that the queen “represented what it means to lead with conviction, selflessness, and faith in God and in her people. She led her people with grace, showing what servant leadership means in principle and in practice.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell noted, “Despite spending three quarters of a century as one of the most famous and admired individuals on the planet, the Queen made sure her reign was never about herself—not her fame, not her feelings, not her personal wants or needs. She guided venerable institutions through modern times using timeless virtues like duty, dignity, and sacrifice.”

Games tomorrow: with the winner in bold. Hopefully the Jackets won’t come out flat after playing a good game this past Monday night. Western Carolina will come ready to play. Florida could be for real, after beating Utah last week. Kentucky thinks they can win the SEC East, but they might be looking past the Gators. Wish Pitt would be the Vols, but it may be too much to ask. Dabo beats Tech and Clemson gives him a raise.

Georgia State gave South Carolina a bit of a game last week. Maybe they can do the same with UNC. That’s here in Atlanta, right? Was listening on the radio yesterday about GSU’s star player, a running back who’d been a star recruit from Grayson. Chose SC over UGA, and eventually transferred to Georgia State. He loved to play defense but offense has worked out better for him. He’s on the Doak Walker Award Watch List.

I was running a little late this morning and I had stayed up late last night, so I just went hard for just over two miles. Had to use a different treadmill and was concerned it might make too much noise when I ran, so instead of walking  for a minute to warm up I began running immediately.

Busy morning trying to finish my expense report. Lots of work to do.
