More on The Anxious Generation

Finished up the book The Anxious Generation, which details how the current epidemic of teen mental health issues has been caused not by racial strife, climate change, and political upheaval but by social media and cell phone addition combined with an overprotective society, unwilling to let kids play and explore on their own (like previous generations like yours and mine). The Center for Disease Control reports that too much social media can actually lead to physical symptoms like stomach pain, etc. Studies show the increase in sexual identity issues has been linked to excess social media use.

Since children and teenagers have started carrying cell phones (around 2010) not only has mental health deteriorated, but grades have dropped. This was going on long before covid. Instead of playing outside with real friends, learning to avoid injury and settle their own differences, kids are staying in their rooms glued to their phones: girls on social media and boys playing game like Fortnight with strangers – instead of learning how to drive. They’re not learning the social skills needed to better interact with the outside world. Teens aren’t breaking bones because they’re not playing outside.

Two changes some schools have already instituted have proven to help: (1) more free play time and (2) having kids’ phones locked away for the entire school day. Teachers would agree: right now kids aren’t making friends or even interacting with each other in class or in the hallways – instead they’re glued to their phones. In schools where these measures have been implemented (1) test scores have risen, (2) incidents of trouble have decreased, and (3) students are happier and report less anxiety. No wonder the kids of tech executives are being sent to phone free schools.

The book was written by a psychologist, a parent of kids experiencing these issues. He admits that religious rituals like corporate worship reduce anxiety, foster needed community, and lead to better physical and mental health. He quotes Jesus’ words “judge not, lest you be judged” - though the opposite is most often the case on social media. Many blame colleges for warping the minds of students, when in fact a majority of students these days are arriving on campus unprepared for many of the real world experiences they are encountering. These students expect the college to protect them from having to hear viewpoints different from their own – and freedom of speech is limited.

Cell phone addition has ramifications in adults as well: anxiety and decreased productivity for starters. I know I need to cut down on my cell phone use. It is where I get most of my news and sports updates, but I sure need to cut down. This is a book everyone should read – especially parents of kids five to 15.

Like dogs, deer, and other animals, people can be in a defensive mode or a discovery mode – especially children. While the defensive mode is sometimes necessary for survival, life is best lived in discovery mode. I was raised in a defensive environment, and so often it unfortunately remains my default mindset. So freeing to watch my kids and grandkids live in discovery mode.

Braves Pirates

Scored some last minute Braves tickets on Friday afternoon. Left work at 4:45 and stopped by Taco Bell, then took Spaulding pretty much to Heards Ferry then over to the ballpark, a peaceful tree lined drive of an hour.

With pretty of time before the game started, I headed to the team store. Not a long line to get in. My first time inside since it was renovated. Saw an usher wearing a bucket cap, and it didn't look good. Still its on my bucket list to get one. One day. Glad I passed.
Finished my circumnavigation of the ballpark. Since I hadn't known I was coming, I wasn't wearing Braves gear. Grabbed my old spring training cap from the car, and decided to sign up for a free "This Is Braves Country t-shirt at the Chevrolet booth to wear. Also a free designated driver Coke and free popcorn underneath the stands. Made it to my seat before first pitch.
I had forgotten to snap my obligatory sneaker photo at the last two games I attended, but I remembered this time. Said hello to Uber Fan Howard Evans, past president of the Braves 400 fan club. Saw Norman as well. I rarely attend Friday night games. This would be the largest attendance of the season, with over 42000 in attendance.
Certainly didn't need ANOTHER Braves cap, but made a good choice snagging a New Era 9Fifty camo snapback. I'd had a camo Braves cap before before Winnie ate it. Here in the South, every Braves fan needs a camo cap. There were two camo caps to choose from.

The other camo did look more country, but the green tomahawk and 30th anniversary logos were a turnoff (above). The lightweight mesh back will be cool in summer, and perfect for the beach. And I am able to curve the brim.
Austin Riley pouned a home run,
Ozuna pulled a bases loaded double into the left field corner to clear the bases.
Adam Duval broke an 0-15 spell with an RBI double. And I got the free ice cream.

Usually the Braves lose when I attend. Guess since it was last minute, they didn't know I was there.

So now I've made it to games in April, May, and June. Not sure about July, but I kinda want to make it back in August for the Chickfila Cow bobblehead, and in September for the replica City Connect jersey and Ludacris bobblehead.

MILLIE WALKS!

One year old Millie started walking on Tuesday. Yesterday Will had her out running the bases and sliding in to second base. Can’t start them too young.

One of my goals in retirement is to get rid of / sell off / give away all my excess stuff: books, bobbleheads, clothes, sneakers, Braves jerseys, shoes, etc. I have bats and baseball cards, batting helmets and caps, football helmets and who knows what not. The two 1996 Olympic torches I carried in the torch relay will be passed down (I hope). Not sure anyone will want 30 years of scrapbook calendars detailing the days of my life (and many my family’s activities). Try to clear off 95% and save only the cream of the crop.

Jeff Yearwood currently pastors TWO churches, preaching at FBC Concord GA every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening (where he grew up) - as well as Flint River Baptist, which meets one Sunday night per month. He also works a full time job. Jeff says that while he could preach from any book in the Bible, he chooses to only preach from the four gospels. Jeff would be a good choice to pastor SPdL, but he wouldn’t want to move from tiny Concord to Atlanta.

Satire: scholars now believe the apostle Paul spent 3 hours per day arguing online with other Christians.

My friend Rob would be interested to know: a high school classmate of Will’s is now a princess at the Disney World in Paris. I could post a photo, but won't take the time. Her mother now attends the ladies Sunday School class that meets after ours.

Wednesday: worked past 530. Had to take C up to get her car from the shop. Stir fry for supper again. Watched Jeopardy.

Watched the first few picks of the NBA Draft. I am of course far from an expert on the NBA. Plus this year’s draft has supposedly the least amount of superior talent than any draft in years. I’m sure the 19 year old French wingman they drafted will grow in to a decent player. Supposed to be good on defense. But did the Hawks once again settle for a less than superior player because #2 pick Alex Sarr had showed hesitancy in wanting to be drafted by Atlanta. He refused to meet or work out with the Hawks but did say he would sign with whoever drafted him. Why the French center would rather play for the woeful Wizards is beyond me. Some “experts” love the Grizzlies pick. Others not so much.

Then the Hawks trade their best player not named Trae Young. Got two first round picks but not much else, less than they paid to get him. Wish they would've traded Trae, but you can't have everything. But as I said, the Hawks are hardly a blip on my radar screen.

Thursday: up early to lift weights in the gym. Caved in and had CiCi’s for lunch. Loved it. Not sure it loved me. Worked past 535. Ceil cooked beef tips for supper, with cut vegetables and rice. Her beef tips are always too tough to chew, so I went vegan for the night. Watched Jeopardy and Britain’s Best Home Cook. Stayed up past 11 pm. Some sort of debate was running on CNN.

Wasn’t feeling great after making that CiCi’s run at lunch yesterday (plus my lower back was hurting) so I skipped the gym this morning. Didn’t sleep great either.

HARMON KILLEBREW [SABR Bio] hit more home runs in the 1960s than any other player. From 1960 through 1969, Killebrew homered 393 times. Hank Aaron hit 375 & Willie Mays 350. Top 11. Among natives of Idaho, Killebrew’s 573 HRs dwarf the 71 hit by Vance Law - and Law has twice as many as the 3rd place total. Six times Killebrew was in the Top Five of MVP voting: 3rd in 1962, 4th in 1963, 4th in 1966, 2nd in 1967, 3rd in 1970, and in 1969 he won the AL MVP.

Becky Norman’s sister passed away last week.

F150s for Jesus

I’m going to have to get a pickup truck so I can fit in at my men’s Bible Study. Twelve in attendance: four Davids, two Dans, Brian, Ryan, Reid, Robert, Tommy, and Rob. At least four F150s in the cul-de-sac. If Lee hadn't been absent and Reid hadn't sold his Chevy, we could've recreated the Olympic Opening Ceremony. David Reynolds shared his notes from Psalm 51. Good discussion.

1. define the sin v 1-3.

2. appeal to God’s mercy v 1.

3. avoid defensiveness and see God rightly v 4.

4. look to Jesus v 7, Exodus 24, Hebrews 9:26

5. ask God to break and heal you v 8

6. be comforted by the Holy Spirit v 11

7. rejoice and proclaim truth v 12-15

8. resolve and obey v 17

Tuesday: left work at 545 and stopped by Wendys for two burgers for $3 and next door to Arbys for $1 large fries. Dropped off donations at Goodwill, then headed straight to the Bible study.

Wednesday: up extra early to golf. Teed off at 615 am. Was taking my time hitting several balls, but two ladies behind me were keeping up with me. I really didn’t play that well, but managed to hit at least one decent shot each time.

1. Flubbed three tee shots. Decent 6 iron approach settled just short of the green. Two nice chips, one bad. Two putt for “bogey”.

2. Two passable 6 irons off the tee. Two decent chips. Two putt for “bogey”.

3. Two cruddy tee shots. Great long low chip under the tree branches onto the green. Two putt for “bogey”.

4. Two tee shots stayed low and right, then hooked my third right but playable. Three decent chips onto the green. Two putt for “bogey”.

5. Four cruddy tee shots. Two cruddy chips, one left, one right. My next chip rolled off the green, but my mulligan rolled to six inches. “Bogey”.

6. Flubbed one tee shot, then hit a nice low hybrid. Hit a 6 iron that felt great, but I didn’t see where it went (didn’t go as far as I’d thought). Two good chips. Two putt for “bogey”.

7. Hit two good tee shots. Hit hybrid twice from the fairway. Bad choice going up the hill. Not a good roll through the wet grass. Three decent chips: two onto the green and the third just short. Two putt for “bogey”.

8. Three more bad tee shots. Gotta get back to using driver. Hit a decent 7 iron and an okay chip (after a flub). Then two putt for another “bogey”.

9. Hit 6 iron off the tee. Two flubs, then pulled a decent shot left, under another tree. Two poor chips followed by a great chip onto the green. Rolled two putts to within inches. My ninth straight “bogey”.

RANDY JOHNSON [SABR Bio] was the first pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season in each league: for Seattle once and four times for Arizona. He threw the last pitch before the 1994 ML players' strike. He K'ed Ernie Young on 11-Aug-1994. He was the first Yankee pitcher this century to surrender four home runs in an inning, on 21-Aug-2005.

A huge dragon was wrapped around the Empire State Building to advise a TV show, with dragon banners proclaiming “all must choose”. Was this an unintended harbinger of Revelation 12, when Satan (the dragon) was “cast out of heaven into the earth, and deceived the whole world”?

Britain's Best Home Cook

Britain’s Best Home Cook is a show C has been watching. Contestant Pippa Middlehurst (middle) has been flying under the radar, advancing round after round without much trouble. Doesn’t say much and looks American – until she speaks. Host Claudia Winkleman (left) is a bit of a celebrity in England. Guess in the mother country they don’t change their name when they get into show bidness. Turns out this show was taped in 2018. Lots of English dishes: meat pies, lamb, and such.

Sunday: took a long time to get Ceil out of church, then we had to stop by Whole Foods on the way home. Got home and I fixed quesadillas for lunch, then started some laundry, then worked to jump start Ceil’s car. The jumper cables were toast so I had to go to WalMart to get home. Was 7 pm by the time I got home and got the car jumped.

Ceil fixed pancakes for supper. Then I went out and cut the grass. Yard was dry so afterwards I watered the lawn. Left the hood up on the car in case I needed to jump it off in the morning.

Monday: woke up at my usual 515 am. Heard raindrops on the roof…couldn’t believe we were having a thunderstorm. Went outside and closed the hood. Got ready for the gym and went and jumped off the car. But then we decided to take the car to the shop. The car didn’t have much power, and struggled to get up the first hill. With 4 more big hills to go, Ceil turned around. I called a tow truck.

Ceil took my car town to babysit Shivonne and Millie, so I had to work from home. It is always something. Between Ceil’s car, the tow truck, and other things we have paid out over $2,000.00 of unexpected stuff the last 24 hours. Ceil’s car wasn’t ready for pickup yesterday afternoon. Today she was the one stuck at home. I logged off from work at 530 but played on my laptop for another hour while Ceil napped. Got a lot of computer stuff done. Should have read last night but instead shopped on my phone.

Ceil fixed stir fry for supper. Watched the end of Jeopardy. Was in bed by 930.

Tuesday: up early this morning to run at the gym.

EDDIE COLLINS [SABR Bio] had a career .333 batting average (including seasons of .360, .365, and .372) but never led his league. In 1909, 1914, and 1915, the only AL batter he trailed was Ty Cobb. He finished in the AL Top Ten in 15 of the 18 seasons when he played at least 100 games, and finished in the Top Five 11 times. He was offered the Yankees’ manager’s job following the death of Miller Huggins at the end of the 1929 season, but elected to stay in Philadelphia with Connie Mack’s A's. He coached there from 1929-32. His son played baseball for Yale University, helping them win the Ivy League Championship. Eddie Collins Jr. also played three seasons for the Athletics.

Paul’s 1st Missionary Journey

Clay Smith JFBC

Paul's 1st Missionary Journey

Communion: a time to look back at Christ's example, to look inward, look up to God, look to the future to how God will work through you, and in your life.

Mark Twain: "the two most important days are the day you were born, and the day you find out why".

Purpose in life to help as many as possible to come to know Jesus. People with purpose live longer and healthier lives.

William Carey 1700s-early 1800s an Englishman. Changed what being a missionary was like. Was a teacher became a pastor. Wrote a manifesto. Others in the church didn't care. He said to "expect God to do great things, while I attempt to do great things for God in His name."

Acts 13:1-3 Paul was unique but was also human with similar challenges . He was able to travel as it was a peaceful time. Roads. Paul walked over 10,000 miles.

Reminders on how to live on mission.

1. Ask God to lead you. Paul was in Antioch with 4 other church leaders, praying and fasting and worshipping. They were called, first internally by the Holy Spirit and externally by the church body. They were driven by the Holy Spirit.

2. Find a partner, a team to do the mission together. They had John Mark, Barnabus, Timothy. Helps with accountability and spreading the work around. Wm Carey story: we hold the rope while missionaries go out. Paul meets Barjesus , who is not a follower. Barjesus works to prevent God being able to work.

3. Be prepared to share. V 14-15. If you have any word of exhortation, say it. Paul would come into a new city and first go into the synagogue. V 38 through God comes freedom from sin, you'll be forgiven and become free. Release control to God. Heaven will only be filled with forgiven people, not perfect people. So we need to be ready to share the gospel with the people who need to hear. We need to already know what to say. Paul was asked to come back, but then he was persecuted

4. Don't quit when it gets hard. Must have thick scum, now more than ever. V 48-52 they shook off the dust from their feet, and moved on, filled with joy. Paul didn't quit. The great commission will not happen without great suffering. William Carey suffered. Two kids died. Didn't see a convert for over 7 years.

5. It's not about you. Paul's group saw a lame man. Paul healed him v 14 the crowd thought Paul was a god. Paul set them straight. It's about Jesus. God is at the center of the story. When the donkey carried Jesus into Jerusalem…

6. Be an encourager. Paul was stoned, but went back into the same city. Acts 14:21-23. Paul strengthened his disciples, who later became a church. Trained them, tended to them. Encouraged them. We need to this as well.

7. Celebrate what God is doing. V 26-28. Have the discipline to stop and remember and celebrate all that God has done, and is still doing. To be thankful. Celebrate the wins.

Why have a testimony?

1. To be ready to share. "Always be ready to give an account for the hope that is in you."

2. Only you know what God has done in your life

3. Confidence builds competence.

A. Before I became a Christian my life was…empty miserable etc

B. Then Jesus found me…

C. Now my life is…

D. Ask: Do you have a story like this?

Tips: remember your audience. Avoid churchy words. Don't forget the Gospel and the Good News. Conclude with a question.

Me: there was a time in my if when I had no direction. I was lost and I didn't even know it. There was so much I didn't know. Then good friends told me about how Jesus died for my sins, and how by believing in and accepting Jesus into my life and heart, my life is now free from guilt and shame. I really felt different, and was indeed different. I've been able to learn so much about God, and see the many great things He has done in me and through me. Now God works through me to love others. Do you have a story like this?

The challenge: share with someone this week. Pray for the opportunity to share with a non believer.

Golfing With Reid

Fun dinner party Friday night at the Rices, with the Halls and Hongs. Dan grilled two types of boneless chicken. Lots of fixins: Ceil made two types of rice. There were three salads, all good. Noelle made strawberry shortcake for dessert. Got home at 11 pm.

Up early to play golf with my other friend Reid. Teed off at 615 am. Played one ball. Was able to take several pictures of Reid along the way. Beautiful morning.

1. Fair hybrid off the tee. Like this shot, I would fail to get almost all my hybrid shots off the ground all morning. Flubbed my next shot, which had been buried in the rough. But I hit a great 6 iron to the back fringe, one of my best ever approach shots on this hole. Two putt for bogey. Then I took a picture of the sunrise.

2. Flubbed a 6 iron off the tee. Fair 8 iron. Okay chip, Two putt for a double.

3. Hooked my tee shot left. Chipped over the green. Took three chips to get on the green. Two putt. A seven on a par three.

4. Decent 8 iron to the left rough. Good chip onto the green. Two putt for bogey.

5. Tee shot was just okay. Certainly not pretty. Chip didn’t make the green. Poor first putt, then two more. Triple.

6. Decent tee shot. Flubbed the second but got a good roll. Meanwhile Reid hit a great long approach to the left fringe (below).

I flubbed my approach way right, but then executed a great chip onto the green. Two putt for a double.

7. Worm burner off the tee. Flub out of the rough. Then another worm burner, but it rolled up the hill. Took a photo of Reid's fairway shot.

Another fairway shot, then a nice chip onto the green. Two putt for a triple.

8. Another worm burner that got a decent roll, but then a great 9 iron down to the fringe. Three putt for bogey. Reid broke his driver on his tee shot (below).

9. Hooked my tee shot left, but followed with a good low 6 iron under the tree branches to the front fringe. Terrible lag putt and bad comebacker. Took two more putts on the rough green to finish. Triple.

Finished at 805. I joked like I was headed to the parking lot without picking up my bag. Then inexplicably Reid’s push cart was no where to be found. We could see the tracks in the dew where he had pushed it past the green. We looked down the 9th fairway - not there. The bag had disappeared. Finally we found it – it had rolled down the hill onto the 8th fairway - some 50 yards away.

Worked around the house all day. Later drove Ceil on some errands. Had to go in my car because hers wouldn’t start. Picked up a pie from Pizzeria Lucca on the Roswell Square for sup.

Saw the Indiana / Chicago game Sunday afternoon. If Angel Reese played Caitlin Clark every game, Reese would be an all-star. 25 points 16 rebounds much higher than her average 13 & 11, and 2 assists per game. Clark averages 16.3 - 5.4 - 6.6, with a recent 7 point game lowering her stats. Clark has only taken an average of 11-1/2 shots in her past 5 games.

Did you see clip where they were talking about Caitlin leading the league in turnovers, while showing clips of Clark hitting her teammates in the hands with passes, but the teammate dropped the pass? They’re saying there is a Caitlin / Angel rivalry similar to Bird and Magic – but Angel is far from being a Magic Johnson. Not saying Caitlin is Larry Bird, but the fans are lining up to see her.

Scottie Scheffler won again in Hartford. The season isn’t halfway over and he has already broken the season money-earning record. He’s chasing Tiger’s all-time record. When those protesters stormed the green, they were lucky the ex-con Scottie didn’t just take them all out by himself.

Braves take 2 or 3 in Yankee Stadium this weekend, thanks to Fried and Sale. They’ve won 8 of their last ten.

Lessons From the Life of Paul

Bryant Wright JFBC June 16
Man Missionary Martyr
Lessons From the life of Paul
Clay was preaching at Shannon Baptist in Columbia SC).

Galatians 1:11 - 2:1
Everyone has a story. Most like to hear the testimony of others. Paul's story has 3 parts.

1.  Paul begins with before his conversion.

Acts  22:3 he was a Jewish blueblood, raised in Tarsus in Turkey. Goes to Jerusalem as a 12 year old. Many are Jewish by ethnicity. Paul was one of the few zealous Jews.

V 4-5 so zealous that he wanted to persecute the early Christian church…members of The Way. They were heretics in Paul's eyes. He went to the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem saying he would go to Damascus to round up the Christians. This led to his conversion. God had great plans for Paul's life…Inside his mother's womb. Gal 1:13

2. Acts 22:6 God appears to Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul was temporarily blinded by God's greatness…symbolic of the spiritual darkness that Paul was in. Paul had to be stunned to learn that everything he had stood for was wrong.

3. God sent Anniaus, who was scared due Paul's reputation.

Acts 22:14 Paul's life after his conversion. He was called to preach to the Gentiles. First commanded to be baptized, to be cleansed from the sins of his former life.

Gal 1:16 not by human intervention, but by direct revelation from Jesus. This Paul poured out in the letters he wrote to the churches in the New Testament. The Jewish religious leaders considered Paul to be a traitor and ran him out of town. He returned to Tarsus, the wilderness, and 3 years later back to Damascus.

V 21. At first he was an unknown. A tent maker. He had been serving in the church in Antioch, a long time of spiritual growth.

Acts 15 He went to Jerusalem to the council to determine practices of the church…14 years later.

Are there 3 parts to your story? Few if any have a conversion story like Paul. But we all need to grow spiritually, closer and closer to Christ in preparation for the work Gad has planned for your life.

What can we learn from how Paul shares the gospel in Acts 26?
1. Paul shares the gospel through his conversation experience. Acts 26:8, 18, 23
2. He focuses on the resurrection (v 22-23).
3. He is not deterred (v 24-25).
4. Paul uses reason and persuasion. V 6-8 & 25-26. You know the law and the prophets.
5. He calls for a decision. V 27 You have to close the deal. Ask"what's preventing you from accepting Jesus?" You only have a short time to speak with people. You must build a relationship first. Paul appealed to Caesar, as he must preach the gospel. You can be relational without having a relationship. God can work in a short period of time. It's not me, but God.
6. He expresses his desire that may be saved. v 29. It's okay if they think you are crazy. They'll know that you are passionate.

Acts 9:15 Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.

This past weekend millions of Muslims make their pilgrimage to Mecca. The Hajj pilgrimage began Friday. There have been reports of Jesus appearing to Muslims as they make that journey. Pray for many of these dreams and visions to take place in these days.
