Dawgs Beat #1 Texas

Georgia beat #1 ranked Texas 30-15 in Austin, handing the Longhorns their first defeat of the season. UGA’s defense suffocated Heisman candidate Quinn Ewers, driving him out of the game temporarily in the second quarter. The Dawgs amassed a lead that they would never relinquish, despite numerous dropped passes and a few interceptions thrown by the UGA offense. UGA RB ETN was again difference maker.

The officials inexplicably overturn a pass interference penalty after the Texas fans throw a fit and delay the game by throwing water bottles on the field. Instead of UGA ball deep in Texas territory its first and goal for Texas. They score.

That overturned pass interference call on Texas was similar to several interference calls on UGA. Sometimes immediately after a play where a flag was thrown, the refs will huddle and announce that there was no foul on the play – but never after announcing the penalty and spotting the ball. The refs didn’t huddle until the game was delayed by the Texas fans showering the field with bottles. On WSB, radio color commentator Eric Zeier compared the scene to having your child throw a tantrum after you tell them they can’t have ice cream, so then the parent gives them the ice cream.

Georgia returned serve, but the officials continued to do everything possible to give the game to Texas. A clear touchdown run was called down at the one. Dawgs finally scored on fourth down. Then two UGA defenders were thrown out of the game for targeting. Still the Dawgs held on 4th down.

The targeting calls were correct, but then again similar hits by Texas defenders weren’t called targeting. Just that the four or five late game calls that went Texas’ way made the refs seem biased. Of course the refs aren't biased. Fans love to blast Carson Beck when he has a bad game. Wasn't he doing his best? (actually it's sometimes obvious when a player isn't giving 100% - but we don't know if he's playing hurt). But if fans can criticize players and coaches, can't they also criticize referees?

We watched the first three quarters over at the Halls, with the Keys and Nancy Chiles. The disputed pass interference call took place while we were walking from the house to our car.

Scottie Scheffler was the guest picker on ESPN College GameDay. Everyone picked Texas.  Evan Saban. Herbsreidt said the difference would be Texas special teams, but the Dawgs contained Texas Golden for the most part. UGA had great punts all night long, and had some good punt returns, and made all their field goals, including a 48 yarder. After the game Kirby called out ESPN – “your network doubted us”. He also called out the refs for all the calls.

Cooper Manning looked odd in orange and a cowboy hat. Arch played well, for the last two series in the first half.

Mighty Nebraska was blown out. Michigan lost to Illinois. The Illini wore Red Grange tribute uniforms that looked good.

SC beat Oklahoma handily. Michigan and Oklahoma were Texas’s two biggest wins. Sure the Horns fought hard against UGA. A good game.

Clemson easily handled UVA.

Tech did well to run an offense based off high percentage quick passes, perhaps straying away from a balanced with running plays a little too much. But then GT OC Chris Weinke started calling for downfield passes when he should've not gotten so fancy.

Too many mistakes: GT missed one field goal and mishandled another. GT QB Pyron threw a pick six. At one point the score could have been 21-13, a one score game. But the Irish were just a little too good for a Tech team led by a backup QB, who did play admirably.

Tennessee didn’t blow it. Bama couldn’t come back. Lots of turnover in the new rankings.

JIMMY KEY [SABR Bio] was the last Alabama native to be the American League’s starting pitcher in an All-Star Game. In the 1994 ASG, Key pitched the first two innings, giving up one earned run, then was pinch-hit for by Paul Molitor. He was replaced by David Cone, a former teammate. Key pitched for the Clemson Tigers. Key was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2009Others enshrined there include Joe Louis, Bear Bryant, Jesse Owens, Satchell Paige, Bo Jackson, Ozzie Smith, and JoJo Starbuck. In 1982, Key became the first Clemson baseball player to be named first-team All Atlantic Coast Conference at two positions in the same season—pitcher and designated hitter.
