Will had a big game last night, leading his Warriors to a road win against the Smyrna Athletics. He hit two long doubles, then was intentionally walked twice…once with a runner on first. He scored four runs and knocked home two more.
His first inning double hit the left-centerfield fence on one bounce. In the second inning Will’s line drive hit the left-center fence in the air. Will later reached third, and third-base coach Bartlett wanted Will to attempt a rare steal of home against the left-handed pitcher, but Will instead scored on a wild pitch.
Last night I was ready to lose, thinking Smyrna to be good. The only pitchers I only bring in to pitch in the middle of an inning with runners on base is Will or David. David threw 84 pitches Saturday, so I brought in Will. Since the game was winnable, I stuck with him all the way. We might not win many more the rest of the way, so other pitchers should be able to get some innings.
I brought Will in to pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second. He struck out the first hitter he faced to end the Smyrna rally. He retired all three batters in the third inning, first with a strikeout, then picking off the runner on second, and finishing with another strikeout.
In the fourth Will struck out three batters, and two more in the fifth. The only out he didn’t have a hand with was a popout to first-baseman Nick…an infield fly that Will could’ve easily caught. In all Will had eight strikeouts in 3-1/3 innings.
Ceil learned yesterday some legislation passed allowing home-schoolers to play sports on their local high school teams, so that’s an avenue I need to quickly look in to for Will.
