UGA to Wear Throwbacks

 

Today UGA unveiled two special throwback uniforms to celebration of the 40th anniversary of their 1980 national championship season, as well as a black jersey with a special bulldog collar. Both jerseys have traditional block numbers as opposed to the newer curved numbers first worn by UGA basketball.

The white throwback jersey has the sleeve stripes and collar worn by the Dawgs back in the 1980 season, including Herschel’s first game - the season-opener in Knoxville. The jersey has a patch commemorating the national championship. The red pants were worn by the Dawgs on the road, before the unveiling of the silver britches, and include the same wide white stripe from that time period.

While UGA has worn black jerseys in the past, this new jersey with the unique spiked bulldog collar pays homage to the painted-up students dressed in dog collars and spiked shoulder pads for games. After beating Auburn in black jerseys, UGA got beat at home by Alabama in the black jerseys. Since then the Dawgs have only worn black once, against Lafayette. The black jerseys have been worn by recruits in pictures for recruiting.  We’ll see if the black jerseys make it out on the field for a game this year. Months ago when Tennessee announced they would be wearing black uniforms in response to the protests, I predicted Georgia just might follow suit. Content you only read here on the Sac Fly blog. Now to see if Clemson will wear throwback uniforms this season, as hinted by their uniform Twitter account. 

As expected all sorts of young yahoos on social media offering their opinions, like I am here. Few realized the historical significance of the jersey stripes and red pants. Didn't have to scroll long to find someone wanting to pair the black jerseys with the red pants. That's not how it works with Kirby, thanks goodness.

Love the red pants set. Both sets are termed alternate uniforms, as opposed to being the regular home or away uniform. Might see both this year, might not. I think we'll see both, since both have the "equality" patch. We'll see.

What I don't like: Blogger has changed the format, and it's going to take me awhile to figure it out. Hence all the photos all together, instead of spread out between paragraphs. Dang it I spend too much time on this already.

_{Had this dream that I was in a fancy golf community delivering something for a golf tournament. Guy at the door let me in and took me out on the deck where all the golfers where. PGA champion Collin Morikawa hung out with me for a bit.}  

_{Last night C and M cooked chili. M added ground anchovies for a more savory flavor. I prefer my chili to be sweeter. C was working on school stuff. I had on the Braves. Had leftover chili for an early lunch, with chips.}

_{Ceil had a minor medical procedure today near Northside Hospital, so I may be picking up supper tonight.} 

HANK GREENBERG  [SABR Bio] is the only player to hit a pennant-clinching grand slam on the last game of the season. Dramatic 9th inning GS 30-Sept-1945. He turned down a chance to play for the Yankees to attend NYU. The Yankees had Lou Gehrig, so it was a defendable decision. It was a holy day when he hit two home runs, on Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah 10-Sept-1934.  After some additional deep soul-searching, Greenberg stuck with his decision not to play on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, later that same season.
