Teams only played 14 games per year until 1978. Before 1961 (Jim Brown's fifth season), the NFL only played 12 game seasons. Brown never missed a game in his career.
Players listed in order by end of career. Before Herschel, the only backs to gain 1000+ yards in nine seasons were Jim Brown, Franco Harris, Walter Payton, and Tony Dorsett. All are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
After Herschel retired, only Marcus Allen, Barry Sanders, Ricky Watters, Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk, and LaDainian Tomlinson have reached that mark. All but Watters is in the PFHOF.
Before Herschel retired, only Roger Craig had more receptions by a running back. Only Walter Payton had more combined yards.
