Blind Squirrel Finds Nut?

GT BB HC Damon Stoudamire is just the third first-year ACC head coach to beat both Duke and UNC in the last 30 seasons, joining Sidney Lowe and Kevin Keatts. GT/UNC: hopefully the win is a step in the right direction. Something they needed. A week or two ago I heard that the new coach had let the team have it for not playing in games like they did in practice.

News: yesterday I worked past 620. Was feeling better but not good enough to stop anywhere. Got home and C asked me to take Winnie outside. I did, and it was obvious she needed to go, despite C having taken her out earlier in the afternoon. Then after supper W was acting like she needed to go out again, so I took her. Then after going to bed, Winnie told me FOUR more times throughout the night that she needed to go outside. And she did. She was sick all day today as well.

Good that it wasn’t too cold last night. I put on a jacket, cap, and sneakers to go outside, but the night chill wasn’t the greatest for my cough and recent sickness. I slept better, except for all the interruptions. I’m no better today than yesterday. Still have the cough and some aches, though I have taken some pills to help me recover. Seems like I’ve been sick two or three times this past month. Been works long hours, but had thought I’d had a good month exercising. I think I need to rest more!

Looks like the weather might let me get in a round of golf on Saturday morning. Haven’t played in 3 weeks.

Supper was chicken teriyaki stir fry. Good, but C thought it too salty. Not sure we even turned on the TV. I finally dragged out my laptop for the first time since Friday, so I had some catching up to do.

Skipped the gym and slept too late, until 645. Left home at 720 and thought I’d be late, but made it to work with 5 minutes to spare.

HANK GREENBERG [SABR Bio] was the last pre-expansion player with 100 of each of these stats in the same season: bases-on-balls, runs, RBI, and extra-base hits. In 1937, Greenberg collected 102 BB, 137 runs, 184 RBI, and 103 XBH. Here is everybody with such a season. His RBI total for that season is only one short of the AL record. Greenberg’s 184 RBI in 1937 is second only to Lou Gehrig’s 185 in 1931. The all-time best RBI season still belongs to the Cubs’ Hack Wilson. His 191 in 1930 was a record Babe Ruth said would never be broken. ew York Giants’ manager John McGraw passed on Greenberg, finding him “too clumsy”. McGraw also gave up on Hall of Famer Hack Wilson for similar reasons. Hank’s birthday is “1-11-11” (01-Nov-1911).

BILL TERRY [SABR Bio] was the last National Leaguer to hit .400 for a season. Terry hit .401 in 1930 for the New York Giants. On 24-Jan-1934, Terry was preparing for the upcoming season, having played and managed the Giants to a World Series title the prior season. A reporter asked him how he thought the Dodgers might fare in the upcoming campaign. Terry, full of a champ's swagger, didn't take much time to come back with, "Brooklyn? Are they still in the league?" Get the full story here. He finished exactly third in league MVP voting three seasons in a row, in 1929, 1930 and 1931 despite leading all NL players in WAR in each of those last two seasons: 7.9 in 1930 and 6.6 in 1931.

Monday: worked until almost 6 pm. As I pull out of the parking lot I never creep all the way down the steep drive to get too close to busy Peachtree Industrial. So many cars zooming by. Then a cowoker (not sure who) zooms past me. They can't go either. Guess they were more important than me!

Ceil fixed grits and eggs and toasted sourdough. Third straight night I didn't feel like getting out my laptop.

I do feel a little better today, but only slightly. Got a little bit of a cough. Achy joints don't ache quite as bad. Not sure if my potential hernia is getting worse, and if that's contributing to my overall sickness. Could be the flu, could be pneumonia. Been trying to sleep on my back with my head and shoulders elevated. Had a hard time getting any sleep last night. But I feel tons better today. Except for the cough.

Work is busy. Didn't work this past weekend. Lots to do. Wasn't looking forward to this afternoon's conference call about "errors". Of course we're making errors when we don't know what we're doing !! No one interested in helping out, or checking to see what's going on. Just suck up an hour of time that several overworked newbies can't spare so some bigwig's little corner of the world stays tidy. Then questions from auditors about stuff that happened a month ago. I get blamed, though I didn't make the mistake.

Watched the games yesterday. I had figured KC and SF would win. Patrick Mahaomes has an impressive resume, making the AFC title game every year he has played. Does this make him the greatest QB in NFL history? No so fast. The people making this claim are far from being football experts.

Some say the NFL is rigged, that the league will make more money with the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Hogwash. The NFL doesn't need Taylor Swift to boost ratings or earnings. Each year the Super Bowl is the highest rated show on TV. Others say Taylor Swift is dating KC TE Travis Kelce to draw the middle age white woman vote to Biden. More plausible. Swift admits that George Soros owns some of her music.

BravesFest

Yesterday I woke up sick. Achy all over. But it was the morning of the Braves Foundation sale, and I didn't want to miss it. Got to the ballpark over 30 minutes early and there was already a long line. Happened to get in line right next to my friend Chris, so we had a nice chat.
When the gates opened I went straight to the sale in the Chophouse. It quickly became wall to wall people. Will wanted a jersey, and I found him a #48 Ralph Garr jersey. I was looking for shorts and socks, and I found both: a pair of City Connect 715 shorts, and a pair of Stance high-rise feather socks that I'd wanted for years. Kinda like the dog that catches the car: now what do I do with them.
Couldn't find my size in a few other items. Passed on a blue leather belt. Should've bought a pair of compression shorts, but forgot. Long line to check out. Saw coworker Ginger.

Walked over to the Clubhouse Store, but there were no deals to be had. Then next door to the Roxy Theater where there were snacks for season ticket holders. Also a free Hank Aaron bobblehead.

I walked back to my car to drop off my bag, then went back for another bobblehead. I could've gone back for a third and fourth bobblehead, but was already worn out. Drove across Cobb Parkway to Steak & Shake, but their milkshake machine wasn't working. Picked up a prescription and stopped by the bank.

Got home and Ceil was ready to get to work. Great. I felt terrible. Helped as best I could, but snuck away for several rest breaks and catnaps.

We had a 6 pm reservation at Grana, a fancy Italian restaurant. There's a location on Piedmont. I ordered a meat pizza that was pretty good, but I only ate two slices. Stopped by Whole Foods on the way home.
Ceil turned on a Hallmark Channel movie, but I just crashed on the couch. Slept until almost 10 am this morning. Took out the dogs and fed them, then crashed on the couch again. Still feel pretty bad.

Friday I worked until almost six. The days that should be the easiest always seem to be the most frustrating.

Jersey Girl

Have you not heard of Sweeny Todd ? I supposed the X rating has to do with “blood” though I have never seen the play.

I learned of it years ago from the great movie Jersey Girl, starring a young Ben Affleck as a young single father. While other young girls were singing songs from Cats at the elementary school talent show, Affleck’s daughter insisted on performing a scene from Sweeny Todd with her father, hisgirlfriend Liv Tyler, grandfather George Carlin, and his pals. The teacher fainted.

SCvsLSU: winning ain’t easy. How much does a player (and team’s) character come into play? Some athletes play with great confidence, even when losing. Others get flustrated and down on themselves when they miss a shot or fall behind. Gotta remember that most of these athletes have been playing basketball for ten years before they reach college, playing hundreds of games and tournaments for schools and travel teams. Still at their young age (18-22) their brains are still maturing - though few at that age would be so humble to admit as much.

Last weekend we puppy-sat Anna’s dog Goose. This weekend we are caring for Okie, W&MC’s dog, while they take the girls to Boone NC.

DENISON: Saturday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, designated by the UN General Assembly to coincide with the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazis’ largest extermination and concentration camp, by Soviet soldiers in 1945. This remembrance focuses on the six million Jews murdered by the German Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. One-fourth of them, 1.5 million, were children. We remember the horror of antisemitic hatred so it will not rise again in our day. But it is.

Antisemitism is surging on college campuses, part of a growing tide of animosity against Jews in America, Europe, and around the world. The Anti-Defamation League is reporting an unprecedented 337% increase in antisemitic incidents after Hamas invaded Israel on October 7, massacring more than 1,200 Jews.

Muscadines

Just started “The Sweet Taste of Muscadines”, a Southern novel by Pamela Terry, the wife of former Atlanta-area Christian artist Pat Terry. The Pat Terry Group was big back around 1980, leading worship at the popular Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study in Smyrna. They had a classic album cover.

I finished the Jessica Simpson autobiography. Though she returned to God in her times of trouble, she seemed to fall away from Him the older she got.

Worked past 6 pm yesterday. Got on the road just in time to drive into the fierce January thunderstorm that was passing through. Teriyaki chicken and tossed salad for supper. Up early this morning to lift weights at the gym. I work out at the East Cobb YMCA between 6 am & 7 am. While there I will usually count all the people coming and going. Usually between 20 and 30.

At JFBC the pastor speaks to the students at the Johnson Ferry Christian Academy, and takes part in JF intramural sports with his wife. Like SPdL basketball, there is an end of season banquet.

JOEY VOTTO [B-R Bio] is a Toronto native, plays 1st base, bats left, throws right, and won the NL MVP in 2010. Votto represented Canada at the 2009 & 2013 World Baseball Classics. He also won the Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s athlete of the year in 2010 & 2017. All 21 of Votto’s MLB and MiLB seasons have been in the service of the Cincinnati Reds. He did play two off-seasons with the unaffiliated Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League. He is a huge fan of Ted Williams. He even grew up with a poster of Williams on his bedroom wall. Watch Votto’s interview with MLB TV’s Brian Kenny to hear how deeply Votto valued Williams’ 1970 book The Science of Hitting. Votto played in the minors on affiliated teams in leagues labeled Rookie 2X, A, A+ 2X, AA & AAA.

QueenPins

Netflixed the movie “QueenPins” starring Kristin Bell and Vince Vaughn. Two ladies develop a system to sell stolen coupons, but the Post Office tracks them down and busts them. Not bad.

Not to be confused with Queen Bees, a different Netflix movie about old folks at a senior living facility.

Other interesting movies that have come across my radar screen: Judy (Garland) starring Renee Zellweger. Bye Bye Love, starring Randy Quaid, Paul Reiser, Matthew Modine, Janeane Garofalo, and a Dennis Quaid baseball themed movie.

Stumbled upon an interesting adidas sneaker on Poshmark for $28. I sure didn’t need them. Adidas II Tubular X Ionix II. Seller called them beaters. The next day a buyer offered $17 for them. Sold. Good that I missed them. I did check to see if that seller had any other sneakers for sell with the beater designation.

Out of habit I am compiling my annual list of MLB and MiLB promotional giveaways. Gwinnett has some good giveaways this year, but heck by the time I drive the 60+ miles round trip, pay $12 to park and $14 for the cheapest ticket, I could just buy a t-shirt or bucket cap, or find one later at a thrift store. Plus it takes the entire day to get there early enough to get the promo. Same with Rome. But it is an adventure.

Tried to go home “early on Wednesday but still it was after 5:30. Then I stopped for gas and a drink at RaceTrac. Leftover pasta for supper.

Ran at the gym this morning. Didn’t wear my newest running shoes, and my ankle started hurting during the last mile. Toughed it out to the finish. Boss brought in Chickfila biscuits, and Jessica brought donuts. Just what I need.

MEL OTT [SABR Bio] is the youngest player ever to hit forty home runs in a season. At age 20 in 1929, Ott hit 42 for the New York Giants. It was his 4th year in the majors. He is also the youngest to rack up 150 RBI in one year. Also in 1929, Ott had 151 RBI. Both marks were career highs. He was the first player to win the final game of a World Series with an extra-inning home run. WS-winning HR in the 10th inning of game seven on 07-Oct-1933. It was not a walk-off, since the Giants were the visitors that day.

In Contempt of Court

I had to appear in court this afternoon in Roswell, to clear up the traffic ticket when I only had an ID card instead of a license. As usual work is slammed.

Made it to court with 15 minutes to spare. They opened the doors and had us come inside, me and the other scoff-laws. We had to turn off our phones, so there was nothing to do except sit and wait. I was holding the ticket in my hands. I studied it.

They called up a lawyer first. He had realized he had missed the court date. He finished his business and went away. While the next person was helped, I realized that the 24 on my ticket was not the day of court, but the year. I was supposed to be in court on Jan 23 – yesterday! Great, I messed up.

I looked around and went back to talk to the police officer standing guard at the door. He directed me to the next door. There the lady took my ticket and new driver’s license and told me to sit and wait. Then another guy walked in, who had done the same thing. Another lady tried to help me. She was going to reschedule my court date to March. I noticed on the form that the fine was $740.00. Ouch!'

Then the first lady came back. She had fixed the ticket. My case was dismissed, since I had renewed my license. I was free to go!

To celebrate I stopped by Taco Bell. First fast food of the year.

Worked past six last night. Ceil made chicken fajitas and kale.

Lifted weights at the gym this morning. According to this article on How to Get Fit in Your 40s and Beyond, lifting weights is the key.

CONNIE MACK   [SABR Bio] was the first catcher to have five hundred plate appearances in a season. Playing for the Buffalo Bisons in the Players League in 1890, Mack came up to bat 570 times, a career high. But due to the lack of complete game log box scores, there’s no way to eliminate the possibility that one of these three other catchers didn’t get to 500 PA before Mack did. He invested his entire savings in his new team, but lost it all when the league folded after the season. Mack poured $500 into the Bisons in 1890, but the Players League only lasted one year. Mack managed 7,755 games from 1894-1950, the most ever.

Most Points in a Game

Last night Joel Embid of the 76ers scored 70 points, despite not playing in 12 minutes of the game. He didn’t crack the top ten highest scoring games in NBA history.

100 03.02.62 Wilt

081 01.22.06 Kobe

078 12.08.61 Wilt

073 01.13.62 Wilt

073 11.16.62 Wilt

073 04.09.78 David Thompson

073 01.26.24 Luka Doncic

072 11.03.62 Wilt

071 11.15.60 Elgin Baylor

071 04.24.94 David Robinson

071 01.02.23 Donovan Mitchell

071 02.26.23 Damian Lillard

070 03.10.63 Wilt

070 03.24.17 Devin Booker

070 01.22.24 Joel Embid

069 03.28.90 Michael Jordan

068 12.16.67 Wilt

068 02.25.77 Maravich

067 Wilt four times

066 02.09.69 Wilt

065 Wilt three times, Kobe once

064 Elgin Baylor, Rick Barry, Michael Jordan, Giannis

063 Joe Fulks, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Wilt twice, George Gervin

062 Wilt six times, Tracy McGrady, Kobe, Carmelo, Stephen Curry, Karl-Anthony Towns

061 George Mikan, Wilt six times, Jordan twice, Karl Malone, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, James Hardin twice, Damian Lillard twice

060 Wilt three times, Bernard King, Larry Bird, Tom Chambers, Iverson, Arenas, Kobe twice, Klay Thompson, Harden twice, Kemba Walker, Lillard twice, Bradley Beal, Jayson Tatum, Karl-Anthony Towns, Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic.

So decades after retirement, Wilt still has 29 of the 53 highest scoring games in NBA history. When he retired, Chamberlain had 32 of the top 38 highest scoring games. Wilt averaged 50.4 points per game in 1961-62 season, and 44.8 in 1962-63. In his six seasons playing for the Warriors in Philadelphia and Golden State, Wilt averaged 41.5 points per game, and finished with a career average of 30.1.

056 is Trae Young’s highest scoring game. Later this week the player the Hawks traded for Trae (Luka) goes for 73 points, cracking the top ten.

Saw where Elena Delle Donne could be changing teams. She’s a free agent and could be moving on from the Washington Mystics, though previously she’s tried to stay close to her family in Delaware. I can’t believe she is already 34 years old. No relation to Italian Canadian mobster Raffaele Delle Donne.

Man I don’t like driving in the rain. Got me some new windshield wipers.

My friend from GT used to knit scarfs for her favorite people. Fred O got one. Yearwood’s said YEAR on one end and WOOD on the other. She put my nickname on my scarf. On one end it read, CRAZY and DAVE on the other. She has pancreatic cancer, and is now in hospice. She had never married, but friends from her church were ministering to her, as well as her brother Jimmy. I checked the obituaries yesterday – nothing about my friend, but on Saturday Jimmy’s wife had “suddenly” passed away. Goodness.

Finished reading a book about habits. Interesting, but not life-changing. I am on the waiting list for ten books.

Don’t tell anyone, but now I’m reading Jessica Simpson’s autobiography right now. You don’t want to know who she is. I really didn’t know for sure, so now I am finding out. She grew up as the daughter of a youth pastor, and quotes scripture throughout the book. When she became famous at the age of 18, she went public with her vow to remain a virgin until she got married (four years later). She grew up singing in church choirs and singing at church conventions. She is married to a former San Francisco 49er. After Sept 11 she performed on several USO tours in the Middle East, and went on medical missions to Africa. When Jessica Simpson visited the White House, she met the Secretary of the Interior. Jessica exclaimed “I love what you’ve done with the place!” True story.

Work was crazy yesterday. The emails just kept coming. Couldn’t get ahead of them, or do anything else. Left at 6:20 pm. Ceil cooked a soup with lentls, spinach, carrots, etc. I can’t her to watch basketball. Yet.

Ran at the gym this morning. Vendor brought in lunch: Piazonas Pizza, from the Norcross town square. Very good.
