Shivonne's First Birthday

Shivonne’s birthday party. Made it down to W&MC’s by 2 pm, but I had to run to Kroger for extras.

More than 30 people dropped by, mostly friends from W&MC’s church.

Joel and Charles Norman brought their wives, as well as Shivonne’s buddy, little Peter Norman (Charles’ son). He looks just like a Norman kid.

Golf was the theme of the party. W&MC had set up a course with five events: (1) putt putt, (2) guess the number of tees in the jar, (3) tee toss (a tough game), (4) chipping a ball into a net, and (5) closest to the pin. They had scorecards printed up, a box of the little golf pencils, and a trophy for the winner.

Also yummy sandwiches from Chicken Salad Chick set up like the Masters: egg salad, pimento cheese, and turkey club, with Arnold Palmers to drink.

Matthew decorated a little cake for Shivonne, which she got to eat by herself.

Later M had to go to work. After the party W&MC, and Shivonne and Ceil and I went down to eat at Matthew’s Monday Night Garage. Anna & Caleb had gone there as well. MNG was closing down, so we went next door to Boxcar. M joined us. We didn’t get much. MC got fried chicken sliders, Will French fries, Ceil chili, Shiv some mashed potatoes. Instead of fries I ordered oreo cheesecake.

Didn’t get home until 9:45 pm. I was exhausted and went to bed. I went to the gym this morning.

HOLLIS “Sloppy” THURSTON  [DD.com Bio] threw the first documented immaculate inning in extra innings, the 12th inning on 22-Aug-1923. In his second year in the majors, he led the league in complete games with a total that would have led the majors in any season in the last four decades. He had 28 CG in 1924. Rick Langford in 1980 was the last pitcher with 28 CG for Billy Martin’s Athletics. After about a month into the 1923 season with the Browns and after only two appearances, Thurston was suspended by manager Lee Fohl for refusing to pitch batting practice.  He was immediately waived and then claimed by CHW in May. Thurston was always neatly outfitted, so his nickname is completely ironic.

Puma Cell Venom

I am a sucker for Pumas. Saw a cheap pair of Puma Cell Venom Reflectives and snapped them up. Similar markings to some Hokas I like. Sportier than my black adidas. More comfortable and subdued than my other black Pumas.

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://runrepeat.com/puma-cell-venom__;!!AE29DT8V!XYgRRyeUh_5cJic8QNr9jmzsPRFm557tzxAt3SoxxKYuOct-UrMXp8CTBVzs6GuAF3qs8B6dLhXpF5pw4wI$

I am a sucker for black sneakers with white soles. Now I have seven pair. No wight. Need to take a team picture. These Venoms, the other black Pumas, two addias pairs, one Nike, one New Balance, Vans, and my Crocs loafers. Need to sell the other black Pumas, my colorful Pumas, the too small Vans high-tops, and maybe a few others. And bobbleheads. And other stuff.

I am impressed with young Bryce Young. You know back when Tebow played everyone made such a big deal about him kneeling to pray on the sideline, but he never made a show of it either. It was the photographers who watched his every move.

Work: when departments organize the meals, there’s plenty of good food, it arrives on time, and production doesn’t suffer. There’s a reason why they order catering instead of a food truck.

Driving can be a chore. The older I get the harder it is. Traffic on highways can get thick. That said, I enjoy the country views.  I like to park where there are no cars, or at least at the end of a row. I hate even driving NEXT to a big car or truck. Also I like driving a small car. driving great big trucks may look cool, but they’re in trouble when all the parking is tight. And get like 10 MPG.

Pet peeve: I can see people wanting to spend their lunch hour alone in their car, but running the car the entire hour? What a waste of gas. Surely such people don’t believe in climate change / global warming. Think of the pollution! If I get suckered into a slow drive-thru line I will turn off my engine while I am waiting.

Dawgs Win Jackets Lose

UGA beat Florida 42-20 in Jacksonville. I boasted about TE Darnell Washington, and he drops two passes. Dude is still a beast. Dawgs added a helmet sticker to honor Bulldog great Frank Sinkwich.
After the game Kirby dedicated the win to Vince Dooley. Always loved that red tie with the helmets.

Pet peeve: why do so many co-workers back into their parking space? Looks cool, and makes it easier to leave, but the extra time it takes to back in is a waste. Easier to back out of a parking space on the way out.

TIM HUDSON  [SABR Bio] set the Major League record for the longest streak of seasons with 10 or more wins and 9 or fewer losses, with seven straight years 1999-2005. Zack Greinke matched that mark 2011 thru 2017. He won the Comeback Player of the Year award the same year he won the Hutch award, in 2010. The Hutch Award is given each year to a MLB player who best exemplifies the honor, courage and dedication of well-respected MLB player and manager Fred Hutchinson, both on and off the field. He didn’t hit his first major-league home run until he was 34 years old, and thereafter hit one every other season of his career. His HR total was four in his 17 year career. His third career HR had some help.

Halloween Costumes

Human Resources sponsoring a “virtual” costume contest, though workers have been ordered back in the office four days of the week. I found a picture on the internet to send in for my entry (above). Feel free to enter - the more the merrier.

The website that sells jerseys also sell cute mascot outfits: bears, chickens, ducks, wolves, penguins – even Mr. Met. Now that’s scary. I told Rachel and Angie we could wear matching outfits, but then we'd have to split the prize money. But it would be weird for an old guy like me to wear a costume like that.

Tuesday: worked until 5:30. Home to chill. Watched the college football rankings show and Jeopardy, then some of Celebrity Jeopardy. Not sure who all these “celebrities” are.

Breaking news: legendary UGA coach Vince Dooley passed away this afternoon. He had just recently turned 90.

Thursday: lifted weights at the gym. When I arrived I was the only one in the weights area. Worked past 6:15. Stopped by to pick up more Halloween candy.

Homemade pizza for a late supper. Watched final jeopardy when we got home, and later “So Help Me Todd”. Ran three miles at the gym this am.

For lunch today I was going out for the free Quarter Pounder deal, but the program group had leftover Chickfila biscuit and potato salad, so I was good. I passed on the Krispy Kreme donuts.

Sometimes I wish we attended the traditional service in the sanctuary. Singing those old hymns give me a feeling of comfort, as opposed to the uneasiness I sometimes feel in the gym. Small group leader John and his wife Laurel attend the sanctuary service. She is a church pianist, and knows John Condra and Norma McDonald. Laurel’s mother is also a church pianist down in St. Simons, and knows Norma as well.

Dave-o's Day Off

I had expected Wednesday to be a normal day. Ran at the gym, then returned home to work. Ceil had left out to work. Later she called – she had forgotten something. I offered to bring it to her at lunchtime. That's when everything went haywire.

0630 run 3 miles at gym

0745 start work

0900 conference call

1000 conference call

1100 McDonalds in Roswell drive-thru

1115 Dropoff at Ceil's school in Alpharetta

1130 Scored some Pumas from a nearby store

1145 Checkers in Woodstock for fries

1200 Carwash

1215 Browsed at Goodwill

1230 Back home

1245 M called: his car broke down on 285

0100 Drove him my car so he could get to work

0115 Visited with the kind hero unit man

0200 Rode on the tow truck to the shop

0245 Checked out the train store next door

0300 Walked to McDonalds

0315 Picked up by Ceil

0330 Drove Ceil to Perimeter Mall

0345 Checked out costumes at Marshalls

0445 Took a wrong turn onto 285 east.

0500 Took Chamblee Dunwoody

0515 to Peachtree Dunwoody

0530 to Spaulding to Johnson Ferry.

0545 Dropped C off at church

0600 Rescued Winnie

0700 Drove back to pick up Ceil

0730 Trader Joes

0745 Home. Stir fry for supper.

0900 take Winnie outside

1000 hit the sack

1130 take Winnie outside again

After Ceil finished in Perimeter Mall she came out to the car and wanted to go to Taqueria. I know a back way to the Brookhaven Taqueria to avoid traffic. Took one route out of the mall but it was backed up. Took another better route across the new 285 bridge, and was fixing to turn left toward the route past Marist when C decided she just wanted to go home.

So I made a right toward Northside Hospital, then right on Ashford Dunwoody toward Sandy Springs. But the left lane was gridlocked and the right lane funneled onto 285 east. So that's what I had to do, since I didn't want to block traffic waiting to merge left. The first exit was Chamblee Dunwoody (I think. I get all those something Dunwoody roads mixed up). Left off the exit, left onto Peachtree Dunwoody through downtown Dunwoody, then another left, and left on Spaulding. Took that across 400 and Roswell Road all the way to Johnson Ferry, then across the river into East Cobb. Much more scenic and less traffic and stress than 285 and 400. Some people stick to the interstates even in rush hour. I am pretty much the opposite, even if it takes longer.

MAX SCHERZER  [B-R Bio] was the most recent pitcher to both strike out 20 hitters in a game and throw a no-hitter in another. He threw a no-hitter 20-Jun-2015 and K'd 20 on  11-May-2016. Randy Johnson was the first (and only other) pitcher in this century to notch this combo. He is one of only three pitchers known to have thrown more than two immaculate innings. An immaculate inning is one where the pitcher strikes out all three batters on a total of 9 pitches. Scherzer's innings were the 5th on 14-May-2017(2), the 6th on 05-Jun-2018, and the 6th on 12‑Sep‑2021. The others who thrice threw immaculate innings are Chris Sale, Sandy Koufax, and Randy Johnson. Heterochromia iridum is a condition where each of a person's eyes have a different color. Max has one blue eye and one brown, but for a brief, but fantastic moment in time, he added a 3rd color. Read it here.

QB DJU & Life in the Fast Food Lane

Clemson QB DJ Ulagaleilei's QB rating plummeted to 69.9 after last Saturday's performance against mighty Syracuse. Four turnovers, including a long fumble return for a Syracuse TD (above). DJ's game QBR was 16.0, which ranked 96th in the nation (compared to Bryce Young's 90.7 and Hendon Hooker's 90.6). He dropped from 25th in the country to 37. After the game Dabo said everyone has a bad day, that DJ was still the starter and leader of the offense. Swinney calls the fans talk of a QB change "embarrassing". I call QB DJU's play embarrassing.

If DJ struggles against Notre Dame, we'll see how quickly Dabo inserts freshman sensation Cade Klubnik, who operates at a much quicker, less hesitant pace than DJ. The Tigers will have to be firing on all cylinders to beat Notre Dame in South Bend, as well as resurgent South Carolina in the season finale.

After last season DJU lost his NIL deal with Dr. Pepper and Bojangles, which leads me to the next subject...

Monday night Ceil cooked a vegetable beef soup, but I cashed in a Wendys coupon instead. Big mistake. Slow drive thru line. Slow service. High prices. Food not the greatest. When Wendys first opened they were something, really giving McDonalds a run for their money. Man Wendys has really gone downhill. The Wendys app simply does not work. I don't need to go back.

Reminds me, I have a deal for a free Steak & Shake milkshake. Plus there you can get a decent burger and fries for a good price.

This month McDonalds has a deal in their app for a free Quarter Pounder with Cheese with any purchase. I've been getting a Coke Zero. The quarter pounder is okay, certainly a far cry from Holman & Finch, and overpriced at five bucks. But a buck for a Coke and Quarter Pounder is a decent deal.

At Zaxbys I usually get tenders or better yet the big salad. Lots of good stuff to choose from, though lately the tenders have been dry and disappointing, a step below Chickfila. But a coworker ordered loaded fries, with chicken and cheese and ranch dressing. Good stuff – much better than Wendys loaded fries.

For the record today I found myself in the vicinity of a Checkers, so I cashed in a deal on their app for their above-average french fries.

Playing in a less potent offense, Matt Olson collected 78 extra base hits to Freddie Freeman's 70. Olson out-homered Freeman 34-21. Freddie had a better overall year, but let's see how the next seven years pan out.

..G.. AB.. R… H. 2B HR RBI BB K. avg OBP SLG OPS
162 616 086 148 44 34 103 75 170 240 325 477 802 Olson

The first Hot Stove meeting of the fall will be Wednesday November 9.

Driving on Peachtree Road, and where to park at Piedmont Hospital can be hard, even for the valet. And pulling out from Sharondale onto Lindbergh is tough. Half the time the sun is in my eyes.

I was tired all day after running four miles early Monday morning. Winnie was tired after hanging out with Okie. We were in bed by ten. At 1:30 Ceil woke me from a deep sleep saying Winnie had to go outside. She not Ceil) had done her business at 9:45 and is usually good until morning (Winnie, not Ceil). As we headed downstairs she seemed more interested in where the cat was than rushing outside. When we finally got outside she pooped twice, and tried a third time. The entire expedition took over 20 minutes. Returned to bed and couldn't get back to sleep for over an hour.

I get five weeks of vacation, plus I carried over a week from last year. I will carry over a week into next year. I've taken 15 days so far this year, so I have ten more days to take. Three days on Thanksgiving week and three more the week after Christmas plus three holidays. That leaves four more days to take. Check that: I took off this afternoon, so make that 3-1/2 days.

In November and December the phrase you hear everyone saying is "I'm working such and such a date…AND THEN I'M DONE FOR THE YEAR." Hey, so is everyone else. I like to say loudly "I'M WORKING UNTIL DECEMBER 31ST, AND THEN I'M DONE FOR THE YEAR."

Another pet peeve: when someone says "I talked to them last night" when they talked to them at 5 pm. Hey, it's "afternoon" until 6 pm. Then it's "evening" until like eight. Night doesn't start until 8 pm. I think people say "night" just to exaggerate. Sorry.

Watched some of Peyton & Eli on Monday Night Football. Looking forward to their Halloween special.

We have small group on Mondays. Sounds like my group leader wants to meet next Monday, on Halloween. I was kinda hoping we would move the date. Just leader John and my other friend Reid joined me, but we had a good study on I Thessalonians 3.

DENISON: if either side of our political divide got everything they wanted, our problems would remain. This is because we are at our most primal level fallen sinners (Romans 3:23). Dignity, piety, and virtue are admirable foundation stones on which to build a flourishing society. But as Roman history proves, humans are incapable of exercising these values consistently. The Republic gave way to an Empire that eventually collapsed when its external enemies proved stronger than its internal character. Will America suffer the same fate?

Annoying grammar mistakes.

JORGE SOLER [B-R Bio] was suspended in the minors for attacking the opposing team with a bat in his hand. Details here. He was the surprise 2021 WS MVP for ATL. The Braves began the 2021 season as +1000 underdogs to win the World Series. The only season in his 9-year career when he got MVP consideration was the year he led the league in strikeouts. He had 178 Ks in 2019 and was tied for 21st in AL MVP voting, despite his 48 homers. His lone MVP vote in 2019 was the lowest for any player with as many as 48 HRs in that season.

The Proposal

Saturday afternoon Anna’s roommate Ashley dragged her out of their house. Caleb and MC had bought out the flowers from several grocery stores, then decorated the house. When Anna returned, Caleb proposed. Anna had thought a proposal was still a few weeks away, but wasn’t sure.

Ceil actually wanted to get to the party early. It wasn’t far away: a right off our street, left onto Timber Ridge, right on Little Willeo, and left onto Colony. I thought it was just going to be our family and Caleb’s, but five or six of Caleb’s pals were there. Also Anna’s best friends from high school (Emily from Denver and Brittany from Minnesota). Anna’s four college roommates.

Caleb’s brother Jack and two sisters, and Caleb’s young niece and nephew.

MC’s brother Thomas and wife Holly, whose family are best buds with the Schaefers. Thomas had played football with Caleb, whose dad John was the coach. At least 32 in attendance.

Caleb and Anna arrived, and the party was on. It was the first time I’d met John, so I hung around him most of the time. Matthew and John talked grilling.

John gave a short speech before blessing the food. Later Jack offered a toast. Both had to hold back tears. Glad I didn’t have to speak. A year younger than me, John grew up at Peachtree Presbyterian. I might’ve visited his Sunday School class a couple of times when I went with my grandmother. He played nose guard at Lakeside High, and went on recruiting trips to Clemson and Kentucky with fellow nose tackle William The Refrigerator Perry.

Caleb asked the South Carolina cousins to come. The Schaefers are used to hosting large gatherings. John grilled pork and chicken for sliders. Cheese trays, cupcakes, at least three kinds of cookies. BBQ chips. Dips and more. Will knew Caleb’s sister from a Roswell coffee shop.

Anna was so excited she could hardly work yesterday. She had to attend a store event tonight.
