Matthew's Birthday

Friday night we met M, A, & Caleb at Taqueria Howell Mill.

M is house-sitting at W&MC's house, so we went there for M's birthday cake. M said his moustache was getting bushy because he'd left his clippers at home.

Ceil baked the cake: chocolate mocha. Anna stopped off to get Jeni's ice cream.

Dawgs methodically dismantled Auburn, gradually adding to the score throughout the game. I'm some fans had expected 40 poinbts in the first quarter, but reality rarely works that way. Stetson added to his Heisman resume.

GT hung on to win again, this time with a Stewart field goal in overtime. Jacket uniforms almost looked like the Rock Perdoni era, wearing white gold white.

Article lauding Clemson over other unbeaten teams. They played well at Boston College. The Golden Eagles usually come ready to play. Ceil thought QB DJU looked good. He's climbing up the QBR standings. Tigers could and should run the table, though I'm still not sure how they'll stack up against Ohio State, Bama, or UGA.

Sounds like the Falcons came back to make it a close game, then had a bad call go against them toward the end. But what do I know?

Would fans had been happy in April (or June 1st, down 10-1/2 games to the Mets) if they knew the Braves would win the NL East with the second-best record in the league, earning a first round playoff bye? With Albies missing most of the season, and Soroka all year. With Acuna missing time and not being 100%. Ian Anderson pitching so bad he got demoted. Ozuna having an off year. d'Arnaud missing time with an injury.

And the Mets, who all the experts picked, win 100 games, but get swept by the Braves with the pennant on the line, then get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. The Braves have most of their core players signed for at least two more seasons, yet next year the experts will again pick the Mets to win the division.

Books recommended to me: "A Lincoln". Also "The Boys in the Boat" about a rowing team competing for the Berlin Olympics. Finished my McCartney biography today. At the Hurt wedding I discovered Rocky Butler reads the same genres of books as me.

MEL OTT [SABR Bio] was the first manager ejected from each game of a double-header by different umpires, on 09-Jun-1946(1) (Heaved by Tom Dunn on appeal of call at 2B) and 09‑Jun‑1946(2) (Tossed by George Magerkurth for disputing a catcher's interference call). Player/manager Fred Tenney of the NL 1911 Boston Rustlers was also ejected from both games on 04-Sept-1911 with HOF umpire Bill Klem doing the honors both times. Elected to the HOF in 1951, Ott was the first of five HOFers from Louisiana. Ott has the highest qualifying batting average for any teenager in the modern era in organized baseball. He hit .322 in 1928 at age 19 for the Giants.

Caroline Hargreaves announced her engagement. Charles Norman's wife Annie is expecting baby number two.

Ran 3 miles at the gym this morning. Small group after work.

Southern Baptists built the Ridgecrest Conference Center just east of Black Mountain with the hopes Billy Graham would show up from time to time to try out new material.

All the Normans gathered at Ridgecrest recently.

I Peter 3:15-16: Have a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
